Though it's only a little village, this one has a fish and chip store, gift shops, art galleries, and a fantastic woollen mill shop where you can pick up some unique souvenirs to remind you of your time in Wales. Days spent doing nothing but sitting on the shore and watching the tide roll in and out and the boats come and go from the harbour are pure bliss. Relax by the waterwheel, explore the weaving shed, and take a rest in the cafe at the adjoining woollen mill. You can discover unusual goods, a hearty dinner, or afternoon tea, or just sit in the tranquil grounds of the cathedral at St. Davids, the smallest city in Britain, which is only a few miles from Solva. Whitesands Bay's excellent beach is ideal for lounging or some surfing. You can go on bike rides around the countryside or out on the water to look for dolphins and other marine life. We certainly wouldnât stay here in the winter again. The property obviously hadnât been used for some time. On arrival at the property at 3.30pm it was freezing and we had no idea how to put the heating on, and there was no fire in the lounge. There was a note from the owner to say that heating only came on for one hour in evening and again in morning. So we sat with our coats on! We are early risers (5.30am), and had planned to spend the weekend just relaxing at the house, but we felt that the owners would prefer us not to. There were several cobwebs around the house, and the kitchen floor felt sticky. Several of the mugs in the kitchen cupboard were dirty and unusable. Due to the house being cold and probably unused, the bed felt damp, and when the heating finally came on condensation built up on the windows. Eventually, after an extensive search, we found the heating controls in the kitchen cupboard and were able to put the heating on when we wanted it, which was not terribly energy efficient to heat the entire house, when just a fire in the lounge would have sufficed. Iâm sure Rivendell is a fantastic place to stay in the summer but we would not recommend it in the winter.
