About this property

Tan y Gader is a stunning Grade II-listed Georgian townhouse in Dolgellau, Gwynedd. Dating back to the late 18th century, with two woodburning stoves, an enclosed garden, and set within Eryri National Park, offering a distinctive stay for families and groups of friends seeking both heritage and location. Arriving in town, you pull into the off-road parking space directly outside the front of the house, with further free parking available in a nearby public car park to the side. Standing back, the handsome stone exterior immediately sets the tone, with its classic Georgian proportions and sense of history rooted in Dolgellau’s characterful streetscape.

Step forward, unlock the door, and enter into a charming hallway that introduces the style of the home. From here, make your way into the living/ dining room, where patterned wallpaper brings character to the space, complemented by tiled flooring underfoot. A corner sofa invites you to settle in, while the woodburning stove is set within a striking stone inglenook, creating a natural focal point as you gather in the evening. The dining table and chairs sit ready for shared meals, whether it is a slow breakfast before heading out or a lively dinner after a day of exploring. Continue through into the kitchen and dining area, where white fittings and sleek worktops create a bright and practical space for preparing meals.

Equipped with an oven, hob, dishwasher, toaster and freezer, the room allows you to cook with ease while still being part of the group. A second woodburning stove adds warmth here, and a spiral staircase leads you upwards to a bedroom tucked above. This space features exposed beams framing the ceiling, a double bed, and an open layout with a freestanding bath, basin and WC, offering a distinctive and self-contained feel. Back downstairs and through the hallway, a route leads towards the rear of the property, where access to the garden can be found alongside a cloakroom for convenience. Returning to the entrance hall, a separate sitting room provides an additional space to relax, with sofas, armchairs and a TV for quieter moments away from the main hub of the house.

Also on the ground floor is a twin bedroom with an en-suite bathroom featuring a bath with shower over, offering flexibility for guests seeking ground-level accommodation. Climb the wooden staircase to the first floor, where the décor takes on a refined feel with painted finishes, patterned walls and carefully placed artwork. Here, a king-size bedroom offers a relaxing retreat, complete with an armchair, window seat and its own basin and WC. Another double bedroom is finished with wooden flooring, while the family bathroom presents a contemporary space with a bath and shower over. The principal bedroom is also located on this floor, featuring a double bed and an en-suite with a walk-in shower, freestanding bath and double basin, allowing guests to unwind at the end of the day.

A further staircase leads to the upper level, where doors open onto a Juliet balcony, drawing in light and offering a sense of elevation above the town. The final bedroom is a king-size room finished with patterned wallpaper, accompanied by an en-suite bathroom with a bath and shower over. Stepping outside to the rear, the enclosed garden provides space to gather in the fresh air, where a barbecue invites you to dine outdoors as the evening settles in. Just a short stroll from the door, you will find local shops and inviting pubs, placing everything within easy reach. From Dolgellau, the landscapes of Eryri National Park surround you.

Head towards Barmouth and spend the day wandering along its wide sandy beach, crossing the historic railway bridge with views across the estuary, and browsing the independent shops that line the seafront. Venture to Coed y Brenin Forest Park, where forest trails weave through towering trees, mountain bike routes offer a challenge for all abilities, and riverside paths reveal waterfalls and peaceful clearings. In Machynlleth, explore the galleries of MOMA Wales, visit the Owain Glyndŵr Centre to uncover Welsh history, and experience the lively atmosphere of the town’s market and independent shops. Tan y Gader combines architectural heritage, generous space and an enviable setting in Dolgellau, making it a memorable base for exploring Gwynedd and the wider landscapes of North Wales.

This small, beautiful market town is located in the heart of southern Snowdonia, between the imposing Cader Idris mountain range and the sea. It’s a superb base for a holiday - perfect for combining the many outdoor pursuits on offer in Snowdonia with relaxing days out on the soft sandy beaches of Barmouth, Fairbourne and Aberdovey. The town itself offers a good selection of shops, five pubs and a wine bar, along with a number of excellent restaurants, cafes and two bakeries, that produce fresh bread and cakes each day. Dolgellau is home to over 200 listed buildings, allegedly the highest concentration in the whole of Wales, and the town is also a designated 'cycle break centre' boasting a range of dedicated cycle routes all around the area. Close by is the Coed y Brenin mountain bike trail and this location is ideal for quiet outdoor recreation with superb scenery, mountains, forests, waterfalls, castles and beaches all close to hand.
