About this property

Surrounded by the serene landscapes of the Charente region, near the Dordogne border, Château Lucien emerges as a testament to 19th-century elegance and architectural grandeur.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by the château's commanding presence, set atop a gentle hill that offers panoramic views of the surrounding forests and rolling hills. The 6.5-hectare estate is a harmonious blend of manicured gardens and natural woodlands, providing an idyllic retreat from the bustle of everyday life.

Stepping inside, the main château seamlessly marries historical authenticity with modern luxury. Kick back in the light-filled living room with doors opening to the garden terrace for relaxing lunches or evening apéritifs. Prepare Périgord feasts in the modern kitchen and dine al-fresco or in the vaulted dining room. Upstairs, both the heritage lounge and modern art salon await for more socialising, drinks by the bar, or simply appreciating vibrant art and antiques from across the world.

On the next level, the entertainment lounge boasts an 85-inch Smart TV, PlayStation 5 and VR set, whilst the master bedroom on the same floor offers a sanctuary of comfort with its walk-in wardrobe and huge en suite bathroom. There’s another three beautifully designed bedrooms on the top floor, alongside another lounge and two shower rooms. Up to 8 guests can expect king-size double beds, five-star hotel quality mattresses, air-conditioning and elegant décor across all four château bedrooms.

Walk through the château grounds where you will find a collection of traditional outbuildings that have been sensitively restored to provide further accommodation for up to 10 guests across four annexes. Simpler in style yet still brimming with historic character and great amenities, they include a delightful 2-bedroom cottage annexe surrounded by lavender and a charming loft annexe with a 19th century window from the estate’s original church. They all feature queen or king-size beds, coffee makers, en suite facilities, air-conditioning (excluding the 2-bedroom cottage) and most also have a Smart TV.

The outbuildings face the gorgeous swimming pool which can be heated on request and there is a spacious terrace for outdoor dining with a barbecue and sound system. A sauna, gym and games room (with ping-pong, billiard, table football and more) complete this part of the estate.

Meanwhile, a range of services can be arranged from a private chef and wine-tasting sessions to cookery classes and massages.

Both the Dordogne and Charente regions are a treasure trove of cultural and gastronomic delights. Guests can explore medieval villages, visit atmospheric markets and vineyards or indulge in regional specialties such as truffles and foie gras in restaurants across the region (some with Michelin stars). The area also offers ample opportunities for outdoor activities from hiking and horse-riding to go-karting and kayaking along the Tardoire or Dronne Rivers.

Whether seeking a romantic getaway, a family retreat, or a gathering with friends, Château Lucien provides an unparalleled setting where history, luxury, and natural beauty converge for the quintessential French château experience.

Chateau Lucien is located in the Charente department of southwestern France, very close to the Dordogne border. Fly into Bergerac, Limoges or Bordeaux Airports or take the high-speed train service from Paris to Angoulême, just over a 35-minute drive away.

In the heart of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, a stay here offers an authentic French experience, far removed from the bustling tourist crowds yet still close to many iconic attractions in southwestern France.

Start off by making the most of the château's two bicycles and cycle to nearby villages, each with its own charm and local heritage. For outdoor enthusiasts, discover the natural beauty of the Perigord-Limousin Natural Park offering an abundance of outdoor activities including hiking and biking in beautiful surroundings.

No visit to this region is complete without indulging in its renowned gastronomy. Charente and Dordogne are famous for their exquisite cuisine, from rich foie gras to earthy truffles. With vineyards dotted throughout the landscape, you’ll find a wealth of local wines that perfectly complement your meals or you could venture further afield to the likes of Cognac (75km), Saint-Émilion (101km) and even Bordeaux (140km).

Closer to home, visit the famous markets in Piégut-Pluviers (35km) and Ribérac (35km), experience the arts and crafts of the pretty village of Nontron (30km), then soak up the character of Aubeterre-sur-Dronne (43km). Meanwhile, Montbron (26km) sits by the Tardoire River with its watermills, not far from the Michelin starred Moulin de la Tardoire.

For history and culture lovers, the Dordogne is steeped in fascinating heritage. Explore the charming town of Brantôme en Périgord (28km), often referred to as the ‘Venice of the Dordogne’, with its riverside walks and ancient abbey. The Dordogne is also home to several grand châteaux, such as the stunning Château de Bourdeilles (31km) and Château de Jumilhac (72km), where you can immerse yourself in the region’s noble past.

If you can find the time, a day trip to the historic town of Périgueux (54km) is another must, with its Roman ruins and vibrant markets offering a glimpse into the area’s rich history.

Staying at Château Lucien was honestly a dream! We wanted something different, something unique, something European — and then a friend proposed to rent a castle. As crazy as it sounded, we found Chateau Lucien and it was a perfect fit. The communication with the team was super easy. When we arrived, the place was even better than the pictures. The location is great, surrounded by its own parkland and with amazing views of the forest. A few times we saw foxes and deers in the morning playing in the yard. Everything promised in the listing was there and working perfectly, from the wifi to ovens and the gym. There’s a lot to do nearby, so apart from wine, cognac and food tours, we did go karting, horseback riding, explored local ancient villages and food markets. We stayed with a group of 12 friends, and at $15 grand per week in low season, we thought it was a great deal for such a special and luxurious experience. So, if like us you are seeking a unique castle escape, Chateau Lucien must be one of the best castle for rent in France!

Our family gathered at Château Lucien for a special celebration, and it exceeded our expectations. The château was stunning, the outbuildings comfortable, and the gardens beautiful.
