Cottage du Jardin lies just a short walk from the heart of Thonac, where you’ll find a couple of restaurants and a grocery shop selling fresh bread in the morning. The picturesque riverside town of Montignac is a 10-minute drive, while Sarlat-la-Canéda, with its cobbled streets and lively markets, is only half an hour away. From canoeing along the Vézère River to wandering prehistoric caves at Lascaux and Les Eyzies, this corner of the Dordogne invites discovery.

Cottage Du Jardin is located on the edge of the little village of Thonac, offering a superb base for exploring the Dordogne countryside. Just a short walk along local country roads (no pavement) brings you into Thonac itself, where you’ll find a local grocery store (selling fresh bread) and a couple of restaurants.

Only a little further, the bustling town of Montignac (10 minutes by car) provides all other essential amenities, including a large supermarket, welcoming café terraces, restaurants and canoeing opportunities along the Vézère River. This area is also home to the renowned Lascaux IV Centre International de l’Art Pariétal.

Keen anglers can enjoy peaceful hours by the fishing lakes nearby (day licences are easily arranged locally) whilst walking enthusiasts can explore the glorious landscapes on foot. A short drive leads to the storybook village of Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère, with its picturesque stone houses by the riverbank, ideal for a leisurely afternoon stroll or picnic.

Venture further to explore the timeless appeal of the Dordogne. Les Eyzies, just under half an hour away, is famed for its dramatic cliffs and prehistoric heritage, home to some of the world's most extraordinary caves and archaeological sites. Don’t miss the bustling Tuesday morning market in Le Bugue.

Sarlat-la-Canéda, 30 minutes away, is the cultural heartbeat of the Périgord Noir. With its golden-stone buildings, winding medieval streets, excellent Saturday market and abundance of fine dining, it’s a must-visit. A little further afield, the vibrant town of Périgueux makes for a rewarding day trip, blending Roman heritage with excellent shopping, yet more wonderful markets and riverside promenades.
