About this property

Pass the 500-year old oak tree as you approach Villa Grand Gordes via its long driveway. This setting is extraordinary, on a hilltop surrounded by dense forest, fruit trees and fields of lavender so typical of the Luberon. For guests seeking solitude, the views from the swimming pool are glorious. Yet you are only a 10-minute drive from the famous hilltop village of Gordes.

Villa Grand Gordes exudes character and charm with a rich history – this beautiful bastide was built on the foundations of a building that once belonged to Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque. Be enchanted by the Provençal stone walls, central round tower and rose-clad doorways. Be mesmerised by the far-reaching Luberon landscapes – you can even see as far as Mont Sainte-Victoire on a clear day.

Villa Grand Gordes sleeps up to 15 guests across its eight bedrooms, most with private bathrooms, scattered across the wings of the house. The bastide’s décor is elegant - it is a genuine home so very well appointed with everything you may need. There is so much space to spread out whether reading in the grand living area, relaxing in the TV lounge, working out in the fitness room or creating Provençal feasts in the professionally equipped kitchen with its Lacanche range. Many of the living spaces open out to terraces to make the most of the stunning scenery.

The extensive grounds are home to truffle oaks, almond and fruit trees, lavender and vistas of the surrounding forest. There’s table tennis and boules to keep all ages entertained alongside the summer infinity swimming pool. Truly embrace the serenity of this location in one of Provence’s most beautiful regions.

There are of course some wonderful walks straight from the estate. Photogenic Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque is only 5km to the south, especially idyllic in the summer months when the lavender is at its best. The tiny village of Murs is less than a 10-minute drive away, home to a delightful épicerie selling regional produce, whilst Van Gogh’s beloved Gordes, one of France’s official ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, is 5km by car. Visit on a Tuesday morning to experience Gordes’ atmospheric market.

If you feel like exploring further, consider the antique stores and riverside café terraces of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Avignon and the huge Saturday morning market in historic Apt. Not to mention so many other Luberon gems from the cherry orchards of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, the vineyards of Ménerbes and the red-hued houses of Roussillon across this incredible part of Provence.

Enjoy uninterrupted Luberon vistas from Villa Grand Gordes’ incredible setting on a hilltop above Gordes, just 5km north of Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque. Avignon and Marseille are the two closest airports or take the fast train to Gare d’Avignon TGV (35km) taking only 2 hours 40 minutes from Paris.

There are walks and hikes from your doorstep from this remote setting surrounded by lavender, orchards and forest. Follow the winding roads to the charming little village of Murs (5km) home to a restaurant and épicerie or head to Gordes (5km), one of the Luberon’s most popular villages due to its historic charm, atmospheric restaurants, galleries, shops and pretty Tuesday morning market.

A little further afield, Coustellet (13km) is a good place to stock up on groceries with its supermarkets and Sunday morning Farmer’s market or drive south-east to the historic market town of Apt (22km) which hosts the Luberon’s largest market on a Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, other charming villages nearby include Goult (14km), Joucas (10km), Venasque (10km) and Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt (18km) as well as some of the iconic perched gems of the Luberon such as Ménerbes, Bonnieux and Roussillon, all within a 20 to 30-minute drive. As you explore the Luberon, come across forests, vineyards, cherry trees and hills – this region is perfect for walking, hiking, cycling, horse-riding and soaking up the beauty of Provence.

What’s more, the foothills of Mont Ventoux are also close enough to explore as you venture north, once again passing vines, forest and medieval villages. Bédoin (30km), a mecca for cyclists, is just 40 minutes away or spend time in Mormoiron, Saint-Didier and Mazan, all picturesque Vaucluse villages with rich history and incredible landscapes.

We had a wonderful time at villa Grand Gordes, really superb! The beautiful house and garden with pool, the rooms are much larger and nicer as we thought they would be, fabulous! All villages are very nearby...but the best is...to sit on the terrace overlooking the pool and enjoy Provence!

We have stayed here for the last two years and have already booked our next years visit. The house is peacefully situated in its own extensive grounds. The low key entrance drive leads you up to one of the most stunning houses in Provence. Ideally situated for exploring the area whetherby car (which is essential), on a bike, or just walking straight out into the wonderful National Park with its miles of tracks through the forest. The views from the house are stunning with the beautifully designed infinity pool looking like a natural pond when seen from the terrace. Inside the house is tastefully decorated extremely comfortable and well equipped. Fans are provided in all the rooms and even in hot weather the thick walls and well maintained shutters keep the house pleasantly cool. The spotlessly clean and spacious rooms allow 16 people to reside in great comfort. Most of the bedrooms have their own bathrooms. Whether eating indoors in the dining room or outside, there is ample room for a large party. The staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble. We were a group of friends from Ireland, Northern Ireland, France, Scotland and England and everyone who stayed with us agreed that it would be hard to find a more perfect house to stay in. The house is situated less than ten minutes from Gordes and 20 minutes from Coustellet which has a very good larger supermarket, fishmonger, bank etc. There is so much to see and do in the surrounding area, whether "antique-ing" in the huge Sunday market in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, lunching above the source of the river in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, buying artist's materials in Roussillon, or walking down to a service in L'Abbey de Senanque, that we would love to be able to stay longer and are already counting the months until our return.
