Also a very popular destination not to be missed is Glendalough, meaning "Valley of two lakes", which is a glacial valley in County Wicklow, renowned for an Early Medieval monastic settlement founded in the 6th century by St Kevin - from 1825 to 1957, the head of the Glendalough Valley was the site of a galena lead mine, and today Glendalough is also a recreational area for picnics, for walking along networks of maintained trails of varying difficulty, and also for rock-climbing. The small town of Aughrim in Co Wicklow lies in a scenic valley wjere the Ow and Derry rivers meet to form the Aughrim river. Several times winner of the Irish Tidy Towns Award for the tidiest village in Wicklow, the area is very well-presented and looked-after by the community. A popular location for walkers because of its various terrain in the woodland and riverside, there is also a lot of rich wildlife to spot.
