Guests say

Guests are enamoured with Castello Gubbio, praising its enchanting setting, exceptional cleanliness, and the attentive staff. The castle's unique charm, ample facilities including a large pool, and the tranquil Umbrian location provide an unforgettable experience. The property is highly recommended for large groups seeking a private and luxurious getaway.

Reviews consistently mention the spotless condition of the property, with a dedicated staff ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness, including daily pool maintenance and kitchen cleaning.

The castle's location is repeatedly described as private, tranquil, and surrounded by beautiful Umbrian woods, with lovely grounds and walking paths, contributing to a magical and highly praised setting.

The comfort of the castle is highlighted by guests, with special mentions of lovely rooms and the provision of a cot for a baby. However, one mention of the laundry facilities being limiting for a large group slightly impacts the score.

The property boasts a range of facilities including a large pool, professional kitchen, and recreational activities like billiards and mountain biking. The mention of limiting laundry facilities for larger groups suggests room for improvement.

While guests express gratitude for the exceptional service and the provision of items like a baby cot, there are no specific references to gifts or special thoughtful gestures that can be guaranteed for future guests.

About this property

For those seeking a charming and unique retreat, Castello Gubbio offers a perfect blend of history and natural beauty. Originally built in the Middle Ages to protect the town of Gubbio from Perugia, the castle still displays its medieval exterior, though the inside has been thoughtfully restored to create a warm and comfortable atmosphere.

Set within a 1400-acre estate, the castle is surrounded by a lovely park with ancient trees, wide lawns, and a scenic pool that overlooks the rolling Umbrian hills. The estate is crisscrossed with marked walking paths, allowing guests to explore the peaceful countryside at their leisure. In the right season, guests can also participate in truffle hunting, guided by local experts.

Adding to its charm, the castle has been owned by descendants of Napoleon Bonaparte since 1830, giving it a unique connection to history. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing getaway or an opportunity to explore nature, Castello Gubbio provides a peaceful escape where history and the beauty of the landscape come together in a simple and inviting way.

Castello Gubbio is situated on a promontory in Umbria, the region called "the green heart of Italy", in the territory of Gubbio, surrounded by a large loop of the Chiascio river. It overlooks the Cucco Mount, which has summer sports (trekking and delta plane) and winter sports (skiing) available.

Immerged in an uncontaminated landscape, bordered by woods, grasslands and waters, the history of Castello Gubbio dates back to the middle ages, when it was the heart of the defence of the Commune of Gubbio against Perugia.

The local village can be reached in 8 minutes by car. Gems such as Gubbio, Perugia, Assisi, Cortona, Spoleto and Todi are all within easy reach.

History

In 1391 Melchiorre Montaiti, Lord Magrano, undertook to go against the Noble Antonio da Montefeltro, Lord of Urbino and Gubbio. Magrano was then severely assaulted with the destruction of its mill (which was built again and still exists today) but the soldiers of the Montefeltro family failed to take over the castle.

In 1431 Magrano moved under the jurisdiction of the Dukes of Montefeltro.

Federico da Montefeltro (1422-1482) turned it into his favourite hunting residence. It is said that the Duke was active in the hunting of the fallow deer and wild boars that still populate the residence today. This hunting was always finished with a banquet during which guests appreciated the most precious fruits of this land, particularly the truffle.

In 1600, the ownership of the castle went to the noble family of the Carpegna, a family of bishops, cardinals and Priori of various cities in Umbria and Lazio.

In 1830, Magrano became the property of the family that still today owns it. More specifically, it went to the Princess Giulia Bonaparte, daughter of two first cousins, Zenaide and Carlo Luciano Bonaparte Prince of Canino, who were both nephews of Napoleon.

It is in this charming corner of nature, in this place so full of tradition and history, that guests can spend some nice days of relaxation and entertainment.

We had an incredible weekend in Castello for my 40th Birthday. The location is truly magical and private, the premises are perfect with so much grass and trees with hills surrounding the location. The castle itself is obviously very unique both outside and inside with all you need from a comfort standpoint. Big thank you to Mr. Remo for the hospitality and to Eleonora for being such a warm and competent host.

If you are looking for this unique place like no other for your special event that neither you nor your guests will ever forget look no further. Castello Gubbio makes memories. Set in large and beautifully arranged gardens with a large swimming pool the Castello is one of the most impressive you will ever see. With 14 bedrooms each with their own bathroom you can accommodate a very large group of guests (which few other castellos or farmhouses can accommodate). The rooms are gorgeous and each of them is uniquely and tastefully decorated. The huge grounds offer endless possibilities for walking, hiking and biking. But the most impressive part are the wonderful owners, who will go out of their way to assist you in planning your event to the smallest detail and will try to make sure everything works exactly as you imagine it – from the menu to the entertainment and the settings.
