About this property

An extravagantly redesigned Church Hall offering a one-of-a-kind accommodation for up to sixteen guests.  Holiday in history in the very place where William Wordsworth was educated as a child, this former school hall boasts rustic stone walls, parquet floors and has been lovingly converted to a holiday let with a luxury finish.

The ground floor holds the main sleeping accommodation but follow the grand wood-panelled stairwell up to the epic open plan hall complete with sparkling chandeliers, large break out sofa areas, a bar and a unique eighteen-seater circular dining table.   This is a dream spot to spend your evenings, enjoying a cocktail at the bar, sitting down to a lively dinner then winding down with a game of pool.  A large widescreen TV and comfy sofa area provide an opportunity for a more sedate movie night in, while the well-equipped kitchen is stocked with everything you will need to cater for a large group from dishwasher, built-in microwave, aga style gas cooker with gas ring hob, coffee machine and blender.

Built into the basement floor of the property is your very own spa area complete with large eight-seater hot tub, an ideal place to unwind and relax whilst catching up with friends and listening to relaxing music on the spa sound system.  Whilst on sunnier days the outdoor spaced is enclosed for privacy and holds a fire pit, hammock, outdoor dining area and BBQ grill to soak up the rays whilst cooking up an al fresco lunch.

The generous sleeping accommodation will leave you spoilt for choice for where to rest your head at night.  On the top floor is a magnificent master suite with emperor sized bedroom, freestanding bath, beamed ceilings and views of the city below, wake-up from a great night’s sleep and enjoy your morning coffee on the suite’s own balcony overlooking the main hall below.    A further bedroom off the main hall holds a four-poster bed, feature stone walls, an en-suite WC and access to a lovely bathroom with free-standing bath.

The ground floor holds the rest of the bedrooms with four double bedrooms, a twin bedroom with two double beds and en-suite shower, and a large bedroom, ideal for kids and sleepovers with two double beds and a fantastic double bunk set-up accessed by carpeted stairs decorated with a charming porthole window and maritime theme.

For those looking to celebrate a special event, Wordsworth House promises a memorable holiday home situated in the beautiful Georgian market town of Cockermouth, perched on the edge of the Western Lake District and Solway Coast there is much to explore and enjoy both near to home and in the surrounding area.

Revel in the history of Wordsworth House by stepping out to explore the country town of Cockermouth and paying a visit to the National Trust’s Wordsworth House and Gardens, the birthplace of the famous poet.  Tour the beautifully preserved Georgian townhouse or stroll the riverside garden, packed with vegetables and fruit and leading to a pretty terrace walk.

Get out in nature by taking the short drive to the stunning Bassenthwaithe Lake, over four miles long there are some pretty walks to enjoy.  While you are there why not visit the local Lakes Distillery with a visitors’ centre and bistro where you can sample the whisky, gin and vodka made on site, or even book a family tour where children can feed the venues own herd of alpacas.   Also, found at the lake is the Mirehouse, a remarkable historic house with its own simple open-air theatre and rose garden.

Those looking for a more ambitious hike could try their hand at the local peaks of Skiddaw and Blencathra offering breath-taking views of the Lakes as you reach the summit, an excellent way to take in the truly spectacular scenery Cumbria has to offer.

For some coastal action a visit to the stunning Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Solway Coast, is a must see.  With 7.6m of raised beach there is much to explore from undulating sand dunes, views of the Galloway Hills and a wealth of local wildlife from rare amphibians to a variety of birdlife from pink footed geese to oystercatchers and curlew.

Delve into the Lake District with a visit to Keswick or the busy hub of Bowness on Windermere, just under an hour’s drive away.  There are activities to keep everyone busy, including sailing, horse-riding, kayaking and hill walking.  Choose from taking in the stunning Lake Windermere, by air or water from a breath-taking Gyroplane experience to a relaxing ride on one of the many steamers available at the pier at Bowness-on-Windermere.  Or stay on dry land and hire a local bike and enjoy some of the western shore cycling routes of Windermere and Grizedale Forest which are particularly good for family-friendly routes.
