Guests say

Walpole Log Burner offers spacious, well-equipped lodges in a peaceful setting, ideal for couples and those seeking a relaxing break. Guests frequently praise the cleanliness, warmth, and modern amenities, as well as the friendly and helpful staff. While many visitors return regularly and enjoy the tranquil location, some mention that certain furnishings and décor are showing signs of wear, and a few experienced minor maintenance or cleanliness issues. Overall, the property provides a comfortable and enjoyable stay with excellent access to local walks and on-site facilities.

Most guests found the lodges clean and tidy, with several reviews highlighting high standards. However, a number of guests noted issues such as stained furniture, tired carpets, and occasional lapses in cleaning, including reports of hair and flies. These mixed experiences suggest generally good cleanliness with some room for improvement.

The location is described as peaceful, well-kept, and ideal for exploring the surrounding area, with easy access to walks and local attractions. Some guests noted the site is a little isolated, but this was not seen as a major drawback.

Guests frequently mention the lodges are warm, cosy, spacious, and well-suited for relaxation. Some feedback suggests the sofas and pillows could be more comfortable, and a few noted the lodges are starting to feel a bit tired, but overall comfort is rated highly.

The lodges are well-equipped for self-catering, with modern bathrooms and kitchens. On-site amenities such as the bar and restaurant are appreciated. Some guests reported minor maintenance issues, missing items, or equipment not working, but most found everything needed for a pleasant stay.

Guests appreciated the provision of essentials and the helpfulness of staff. Some mentioned a desire for extra touches, such as more towels or complimentary logs for the first night, but these are not guaranteed and should not be expected.

After staying at Keswick Reach Lodge Retreat (Darwin Escapes) twice a year for several years, it saddens me to say that this will be our last visit. My family and friends have also been regular guests, and between us we had three lodges booked on this trip.Over the years we’ve all noticed a steady decline in both customer service and the condition of the lodges, but this visit was by far the worst. In fact, we’ve chosen to leave a day early. The disappointment actually started before we even arrived. The day before our holiday I received an unsolicited phone call from the retreat offering an early check-in. Initially I thought it was a thoughtful gesture because I assumed our lodge must already be available. Instead, it turned out to be a sales call inviting me to pay for the privilege.Rather than feeling valued as a loyal returning customer, it simply felt like another opportunity to generate additional revenue. If guests want to arrange an early check-in, surely they should be the ones to enquire about it, rather than being proactively contacted and sold the option.I politely raised this as feedback before arriving, but the response from Keswick Reach was incredibly disappointing. Rather than acknowledging my point, the replies were defensive, dismissive and, at times, came across as condescending. I was even invited to “discuss it on arrival” the following day, which seemed completely inappropriate. The last thing anyone wants at the start of their holiday is a confrontation with management.I therefore escalated my concerns to head office, only to receive much the same response. Based on my experience, I wouldn’t recommend expecting constructive customer service if you need to raise any concerns. (If there’s a response to this review, I suspect it will follow the same defensive tone.)Unfortunately, our arrival only reinforced that impression.Official check-in opens at 4:00 pm. We arrived at around 4:20 pm, yet there was still a queue stretching outside reception. Only two of the three reception desks were operating while guests—including people with mobility issues—were left standing for extended periods. Meanwhile, two members of staff appeared to be chatting by the bar rather than helping to reduce the queue. The irony wasn’t lost on us. The retreat was keen to promote paid early access before we arrived, yet seemed far less concerned when guests were left waiting well beyond the advertised check-in time simply to collect their keys. We didn’t receive ours until around 4:45 pm, meaning a significant part of the afternoon had already been spent standing in a queue. When we finally reached our lodge, a maintenance worker had left power-washing equipment on our decking and asked if he could plug it into our lodge through the window so he could clean the neighbouring property’s decking. We’d already lost close to an hour and simply wanted to unpack and settle in. I didn’t feel comfortable refusing, so I plugged it in. The equipment was then left outside for more than 30 minutes while the worker disappeared. Assuming he’d forgotten about it, I unplugged it and placed the lead beside the neighbouring lodge. He later returned, knocked on the door again and asked me to plug it back in because he intended to spend another 45 minutes power-washing the neighbouring decking. It made for a very poor first impression and an unsettling start to what was supposed to be a relaxing break. To make matters worse, repair work was carried out on our front window during our first evening, involving constant hammering. By that point I was beginning to wonder whether someone was taking revenge for my feedback email. The biggest issue, however, was the sheer number of flies inside the lodges.Between our three lodges, every single one suffered from the same problem, as did a family staying in the lodge behind us. This wasn’t the occasional fly you’d expect in the countryside—it genuinely felt like an infestation.Flies were crawling over worktops, walls, food and even us while we were trying to relax. Cooking became almost impossible because someone had to constantly guard prepared food or keep everything covered. Two flies even flew out of the oven when we opened it.Sleeping was equally unpleasant, with flies continually landing on our faces and arms throughout the night. Strangely, there were fewer flies sitting outside on the decking than there were inside the accommodation. We chose not to report this during our stay because our earlier experience with customer service left us with very little confidence that our concerns would be dealt with constructively. Instead, I expected another defensive conversation. As I write this review from the bedroom, there are two flies crawling on my arm.Cleanliness was also disappointing. On arrival, the cutlery, plates and pans all needed washing before use because they were dirty or covered in grime. Even basic items that used to be provided have disappeared. Don’t expect a dishwasher tablet, and remember to bring your own dishcloth too. It’s incredibly sad because Keswick Reach Lodge Retreat used to be somewhere we genuinely looked forward to visiting. Sadly, standards have fallen, customer service has become defensive rather than welcoming, and the overall experience no longer meets the standard we came to expect over many years of visiting. We’ve chosen to cut our holiday short and leave a day early because we simply couldn’t tolerate the flies and the overall conditions any longer. Fly spray made very little difference. After many years of loyal custom, this will be our final stay.My family, our friends and I won’t be returning.
