Merlestead is a highly praised holiday cottage in Keswick, renowned for its excellent location, comfort, and well-maintained facilities. Guests consistently commend the property's cleanliness, spaciousness, and the thoughtful touches provided by the owners. The picturesque garden and convenient access to local walks and amenities contribute to an exceptional stay, with many visitors planning return trips.
Guests are generally very satisfied with the cleanliness, mentioning the property is 'lovely and clean' and 'immaculate'. One isolated comment about finding hairs on bedlinen slightly impacts the score, but overall, the standard of cleanliness is considered to be very high.
The location is highly praised for its proximity to Keswick and stunning Lakes locations, with beautiful walks directly from the property. The views and ease of access to local attractions contribute to the high score.
Comfort is frequently highlighted, with guests finding the property spacious and the furnishings of high quality. The luxurious en-suites and comfortable living spaces are particularly appreciated, indicating a very comfortable stay.
Facilities and maintenance are commended, with a well-equipped kitchen and high-quality appliances. The mention of a broken kettle handled promptly by the owner shows good maintenance, though minor feedback about garden upkeep and fire logs slightly affects the score.
The thoughtfulness of the owners is evident through the welcome pack and the provision of dog-friendly amenities. While gifts are warmly received and enhance the experience, it is noted that such personal touches, though likely, are not guaranteed for every stay.
Merlstead is a comfortable and spacious detached bungalow that enjoys beautiful views from it’s elevated position, across the valley to the north western mountains of the Lake District and with glimpses of Derwentwater. A quiet, shared driveway leads to the gates of Merlstead and steps lead from the driveway to the front door (please note there is no level access from the driveway to the front door).
The front door opens to the hallway that links all the principal rooms. The sitting room features a large bay window so guests can sit and relax and take full advamtage of the wonderful views. Comfortable sofas and armchairs are arranged around the fireplace, TV and to take full advantage of the views. To the rear of the cottage there is a large open plan kitchen with the dining area and additional sitting area benefiting from large picture windows that overlook the garden and French doors that open to the patio. The well equipped kitchen is well appointed and includes a breakfast bar making this whole room a very social space. There is a choice of three bedrooms, the first with a smart ensuite shower room and excellent views. The second features a Superking or Twin with ensuite walk-in shower & WC. Lastly the third bedroom is complemented by a family bathroom featuring shower room and additional WC.
To the rear of the property there is a lovely, sloping, lawned, garden with patio area with outdoor dining furniture and a separate decked patio benefits from bistro table and chairs. A small open stream flows through the rear of the garden which can flow very swiftly during and after heavy rain and parents of young children are, therefore, respectfully requested not to leave children unattended in the garden. A gate from the garden allows direct access to the fellside beyond. A lockable store is available for the secure storage of mountain bikes and outdoor gear.
The village of Applethwaite makes an ideal base from which to explore. With footpaths heading off in every direction there is something for everyone. The path from the back garden provides access to Skiddaw and there are several less demanding paths to Latrigg, and Keswick is an easy 20 minute walk away by lovely country footpaths.
The idylic village of Applethwaite is at the foot of the south facing slope of Skiddaw in a peaceful location yet only 2 miles from the convenience of neighbouring Keswick. Applethwaite has fascinating history, in the late eighteenth century woollen goods were produced in the area and the remains of old corn mills can still be found today. Also, William Wordsworth once owned a property in Applethwaite. Applethwaite is often used as a start-point for a walk up Skiddaw and Bassenthwaite Lake is also nearby where it is known for osprey to nest.
