About this property

Loughrigg Cottage is a luxuriously grand detached Lakeland residence located in a beautiful spot with spectacular views by the banks of the River Rothay close to the famed 'Stepping Stones', in the picturesque hamlet of Rydal at the foot of Loughrigg Fell. This is true Lakeland luxury!

Loughrigg Cottage dates back to the 18th century, and was developed in the Arts & Crafts style during the 19th century, when it was occupied by Adelaide Wordsworth, the widow of Wiiliam's grandson and was once rented by American President Woodrow Wilson in 1906. This fabulous property acts as the perfect base from which to explore the stunning valleys and fells that surround it, before returning back to Loughrigg to enjoy the comfort and warmth that lies within.

It’s clear that this Grade ll listed building was purposely designed and built to command stunning views, which is rare for houses of this era. Now, it’s the perfect place to rejuvenate and spend quality time together and enjoy period features alongside twenty first century comforts, combining gracious living, with a contemporary feel and sophistication.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

The house was very comfortable, well equipped and ideally situated for us. We loved the amazing scenery and views. There were a couple of issues that we would like to mention to you: 1. Although generally very clean and well maintained, on arrival there were extensive thick, dense cobwebs in the dining area and around most of the interior window frames! Thankfully I was able to remove most of these with the feather duster and vacuum cleaner prior to the rest of the family arriving. 2. The bed/mattress in the larger front bedroom (without an en-suite) is reportedly uncomfortable/creaky. I am aware though that mattress comfort can be subjective matter! 3. My adult daughter, who has MS, commented that a handrail by the garden steps to the patio would be extremely helpful to anyone with mobility difficulties. Overall, a beautiful holiday property that we would (and have) recommended to others.

We were lucky to have fantastic weather for the whole week. House was a bit cobwebby in places, although it hadn’t been booked out for a few weeks before we got there, so probably not checked before we arrived. When we arrived the electricity was off so the fridge was a bit smelly and the cooker extractor fan cover fell off when we first used it, we reported it. We would recommend this property and would book again for a family gathering.

We call ourselves the Loughrigg Lassies now! 2 lounges meant we could use one for Yoga and the building itself is beautiful in a gorgeous location.
