About this property

Settled in the heart of Bowness-in-Windermere, a conservation area close to the attractive ‘Hole Int Wall’ and other popular and busy pubs, is this well-presented property, Gildabrook Cottage. An ideal location for all Lakeland activities, and with no need to use the car for evening entertainment, this cottage is a great choice for families looking for an easy break to this popular National Park. After a day of fell walking, head to the sitting room and kick back on the sofa while you catch up on your favourite TV shows. Try your hand at a spot of home-cooking by making use of the quality appliances within the sleek kitchen, including a gas cooker, microwave, fridge/freezer and a dishwasher. Delight in your dish in the character dining room, before popping open a bottle of fizz to celebrate a wonderful Lake District holiday. As the evening wraps up, take the stairs to find three neutrally decorated bedrooms, including a double, twin with picturesque views over Robinson Place and a single bedded room, all serviced by a fully tiled wet room. Step outside to the enclosed front patio where you can enjoy a warm cup of tea in the morning before embarking on an adventure in Bowness. Days out in the area are numerous with easy walks to the fells at the back of Bowness and by ferry to the west shore of Windermere or up the lake to Waterhead and Ambleside. Bowness offers a good choice of shops and restaurants to cater for all tastes and age groups, plus there is plenty to keep you busy as mountain bikes, rowing boats and sailing dinghies can be hired locally. Other attractions within the immediate area include Treetop Lake District, where thrill-seekers can enjoy treetop treks, children can look forward to exploring the World of Beatrix Potter attraction or brush up on local history by visiting the National Trust property of Wray Castle. Gildabrook Cottage is perfectly placed for enjoying all that this charming location has to offer.

The vibrant twin towns of Bowness and Windermere hold enduring appeal for visitors to the Lake District National Park, with each providing a range of nearby attractions, amenities, shops and restaurants to suit all tastes. A variety of boat trips and boat hire are available from Windermere Lake Cruises in Bowness to Brockhole, Ambleside and Lakeside (at the southern end of the lake where the Lakeside Aquarium and the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway are situated). The World of Beatrix Potter attraction and the Old Laundry theatre are 1.5 miles away. Orrest Head, where Alfred Wainwright was inspired to write his series of iconic guidebooks, is a 30-minute walk to enjoy the spectacular panorama of far-reaching views over the lake and surrounding fells. Brockhole, which offers high wire tree top experiences, is less than two miles away, and the historic villages of Grasmere, Ambleside and Troutbeck are a short drive away. There are also a variety of watersports on offer for the more energetic at marine centres along the lake. The area is ideally situated for exploring all that this region has to offer, whether by foot, bike, car, railway or bus; and is within easy reach of attractions such as the spectacular Langdales, Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top House at Far Sawrey, Coniston, Grizedale Forest Park, with its delightful walks and famous outdoor sculptures, mountain biking and “Go-Ape” adventure park, Ullswater, Kendal, Keswick, stone circles, Roman forts and England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike.

Beds super comfy cottage has everything you need. Great WiFi connection. Could do with a little freshen up to and a welcome pack would be a lovely touch.

It's a very stark, minimal property, which lacks all of the usual home-from-home comforts. The positives begin and end with its location. Stayed in lots of lodges and cottages in and around Bowness - many of which are wonderful properties which put the visitor at the forefront of everything. Not so with this one, I'm afraid. No instructions for any of the appliances (if there were any, they were hidden out of sight somewhere), and only one loo roll and one hand wash on arrival for a family of four. The Lakelovers Welcome Pack with a bin bag and a tea towel in was a poor substitute for something more thoughtful. A tea bag or two or maybe a couple of sachets of coffee to quench guests' thirsts after a long journey would have been better. Many more things amiss, but hopefully the owners will take an objective look at the place within the not too distant future, put themselves in the shoes of visiting families, and make some of those much-needed improvements/changes. Too many missing or poorly-executed things to list. Most glaring: paint on the curtains in the back bedroom from a previous touch-up, and hole in the landing wall where the bathroom door has been repeatedly knocked against it. Doorstop @ a few £s max., job done! Shame, as the location was superb.

It was extremely peaceful especially as it was so close to amenities.
