Guests say

Dormouse Cottage is highly praised for its prime location in Coniston with stunning views and easy access to local attractions. Guests appreciate the cleanliness, comfort, and well-equipped nature of the property. The garden is a highlight, offering a peaceful space to relax. Some guests mention minor issues with parking and suggest improvements, but overall experiences are overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing a desire to return.

Guests consistently describe the cottage as spotlessly clean, with several reviews highlighting its tidiness. The high level of cleanliness contributes significantly to the comfort and appeal of the property.

The location is frequently praised for its amazing views, proximity to Coniston village, and accessibility to local fells and attractions. The convenience for both walkers and those wishing to explore the area is highly valued.

The cottage is often described as comfortable and cosy, with comfortable beds and a welcoming atmosphere. Some guests found the stone flooring a bit cold and the curtains too light, but these are minor points in otherwise glowing feedback about the property's comfort.

Facilities are generally well-received, with the cottage being well-equipped and maintained. However, some guests suggest improvements such as clearer instructions for appliances, better parking arrangements, and the addition of a dishwasher. The open fire is a noted feature, although safe disposal of ashes was a concern for one guest.

While guests mention welcome gifts and appreciate the thoughtfulness, there is not enough consistent reference to such gestures across the reviews to accurately score this category. It should be noted that while these touches are appreciated, they are not guaranteed with every stay.

About this property

Dormouse Cottage is a delightful Lake District property that enjoys the very best of both worlds. Just a short walk from the bustling centre of Coniston village and the shores of Coniston Water, yet in absolute peace and quiet. There’s a lovely garden commanding breathtaking views over the lake from the slopes of Coniston Old Man. A perfect property for a romantic break or the ideal base to explore the area on foot or bike (or both!)

This idyllic setting has to be seen to be fully appreciated. Inside the traditional cottage you’ll find flagged floors, comfy furnishings to wind down in and a comforting open fire. You also get the best of both worlds with the layout, a spacious cottage for a couple with a stunning lake view, a king size bedroom and a second single bedroom. This cottage can accommodate two guests or even a small family with an older child (min 12 years old). The terraced garden with wonderful lake views is a place to enjoy al-fresco living on warm days.

Nestling at the head of Coniston Water, the pretty village of Coniston is surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in the Lake District National Park, making it a superb base for touring, with Hawkshead, Ambleside, Windermere and Grasmere just a short drive away. Superb walking, mountain biking and climbing are available locally on Coniston Old Man and Wetherlam, and the lovely woodland trails at Grizedale Forest. For watersports enthusiasts, the quiet lake is ideal for dinghy sailing and canoeing, whilst the less active can enjoy a leisure cruise on the beautiful steam yacht 'Gondola’, or visit Brantwood, the former home of John Ruskin. Nearby attractions include the award-winning village of Hawkshead, home of the Beatrix Potter Gallery, Tarn Hows, one of the most visited beauty spots in the country and Esthwaite Water, famous for its fishing. A first class holiday location at any time of the year.

The cottage has a lovely view east towards the lake and it's only a 5-10 minute walk to the local shops, cafes and restaurants. We parked at Old Station Car Park as the roads were icy and narrow. The fire kept us cosy during the evenings, though we had to stock up on a lot of wood as it burns through it quickly. The bedrooms were comfortable, and the shower perfectly hot and powerful. We opted to take our recycling home with us as everything has to go in 1 bin to be sorted at the waste depot, and we felt more comfortable ensuring it was handled separately. We'd certainly come back to the cottage and to Coniston on a future holiday.

A perfect Christmas break and thoughtful to let us check in early. Thank you.

The cottage was delightful, cosy and comfortable. The bottle of wine and all the little extras (soap, washing up liquid, sponge, tea towel, logs etc) were much appreciated. The access lane is narrow and parking is first come first served and we did have to park in the old station area after unloading our bags, but the shortcut footpath back to the cottage has great views.
