The School is a fabulous, five-bedroom holiday home spread over three floors that has been lovingly and skillfully crafted from an early Victorian, Grade II-listed property, built in 1835 from local stone and slate. With a woodburning stove, enclosed garden, and private driveway parking for four cars, this property is idyllic for a family or group of friends on a rural retreat in Mungrisdale, Cumbria. The property is full of character, previously being used as the village school until the early 1960s when it was changed to a private dwelling with dual use as the village post office - there is still a post box at the end of the drive.
The School was completely transformed in 2006 into a luxury, architect designed home. The whole interior has been professionally styled, using designer fabrics and furnishings, oak flooring in the main living areas, carpeting in the bedrooms, and tiling in bathrooms. This is a hidden gem, set in an idyllic location. From the garage, walk around the side of the house to the front at the back, step into the entrance hall, and store your outdoor gear. Walk up a couple of steps to the main level to find a large and elegant double-height sitting and dining room featuring enchanting large fan-shaped windows, sumptuous furniture, and an impressive fireplace with a multi-fuel stove.
From the dining area, you will find a cutting-edge kitchen with cream, shaker-style units and granite worktops, a breakfast bar, and a large range cooker. You will also find a twin bedroom with views to the rear on this floor, which has sole use of the shower room down one flight of stairs. Walk downstairs to find a second, beautiful open-plan lounge area with full height and full width windows, situated in harmony with its contemporary kitchen with dining table. A sliding patio door leads to the garden from here. Also, find a twin bedroom with en-suite shower room and a king-size bedroom with en-suite bathroom with a separate shower cubicle.
This floor can be used as a separate apartment. Climb to the top floor to find two spacious master bedrooms, both having ingenious glass gallery windows enabling you to look out over the lounge area below. Both bedrooms have king-size beds, comfortable seating, and en-suite bathrooms. You will love the large, southwest-facing landscaped garden with flower beds and shrubs and a terrace with garden seating and lovely fell views. The property is situated northeast of the church in the small village of Mungrisdale in the Lake District National Park. Raven Crags rises behind the house with outstanding views over the North Lakes area.
Those of you who love walking in the high fells will take great delight in the hills around with paths to the summits of Skiddaw, Blencathra, and the Caldbeck Fells starting from the door. The Mill Inn at Mungrisdale is famous for its bar food, and there are other excellent country pubs in the area, especially at Caldbeck and Threlkeld. Keswick is an ideal day out. The cottage is a fifteen-minute drive from either the market town of Keswick, where you'll find many shops, pubs and restaurant, as well as Derwentwater or Glen Ridding on the banks of Ullswater with it's steam boats, sailing, and many famous walks including the Helvelyn horseshoe.
The perfect base for exploring the beautiful Lake District and for enjoying quality time with family and friends in comfortable surroundings. Take in the classic ruins of the 14th-century Penrith Castle or go on a hike to see the majestic Aira Force Waterfall. Make sure you have a sublime holiday to look forward to by booking The School now.
