The Wonky Burrow is a beautifully-furnished, characterful, lower-ground-floor apartment located in the lovely town Bowness-on-Windermere, in Cumbria. Situated in the Lake District National Park and near Lake Windermere, this apartment is a perfect base for nature-loving couples wanting to discover the beauties of the Lake District. Step back in time with this holiday home, crafted in the 1800s from timeless Lakeland slate by the pioneering Brownrigg family. As the very first house to grace the street, it holds a rich history awaiting more memories to be made. Renovated with care by a family and their two little adventurers, this home’s charm doesn’t stop there—its past kitchen, famously orange, has even made its way to the set of Coronation Street as Evelyn Plummer’s precinct flat.
Inside, you will find a living/dining room, where you can cuddle up with your loved ones for a movie marathon on the Smart TV. When you're feeling peckish, head to the sleek kitchen and whip up a delicious meal for the pair of you to enjoy in an intimate conversation around the dining table. When it's sunny, open up the French doors to the shared enclosed patio garden with garden furniture and enjoy your meals out in the warmth. After a long day out, unwind under the rainfall shower and sink into a king-size bed to catch your rest. Venture out to visit the beautiful, lakeside town of Bowness where you'll find Lake View Garden Bar for some alfresco dining, lake views, British cuisine and live music.
Tuck into a steak or burger at Boardwalk Bar and Grill, or for a lighter meal have lunch at the lakeside Old Pump House café. Drive up to Ambleside and for a taste of history visit Ambleside Roman Fort, the remains of a 2nd-century fort and National Trust - Wray, a neo-gothic 1800s castle. Take a hike up to Stock Ghyll Force and gawk at the 70-foot waterfall and the undisturbed countryside plains and if the weather allows, end the day with a walk through the scenic woodland Stagshaw Gardens and take a picnic. Make your way to the charming market town of Ulverston and say hello to the animals at South Lakes Safari Zoo, lounge on the sand and paddle in the water at Canal Foot Beach, and before making your way back to the apartment and closing out the evening with a candlelit dinner at L'al Churrasco.

The vibrant twin towns of Bowness and Windermere hold enduring appeal for visitors to the Lake District National Park, with each providing a range of nearby attractions, amenities, cinema, shops and restaurants to suit all tastes. A variety of boat trips and boat hire are available from Windermere Lake Cruises in Bowness to Brockhole, Ambleside and Lakeside (at the southern end of the lake where the Lakeside Aquarium and the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway are situated). The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction and the Old Laundry Theatre are 1.5 miles away. Orrest Head, where Alfred Wainwright was inspired to write his series of iconic guidebooks, is a 30-minute walk to enjoy the spectacular panorama of far-reaching views over the lake and surrounding fells. Brockhole, which offers high wire tree top experiences, is three miles away, and the historic villages of Grasmere, Ambleside and Troutbeck are a short drive away. There is also a variety of watersports on offer for the more energetic at marine centres along the lake. Vickie was an exceptional host who was helpful and friendly from the moment we booked. Due to circumstances out of our control we had to rearrange and Vickie and her family were more than understanding and accommodated our request without hesitation. Communication was fantastic throughout and they made our stay by being so helpful and welcoming. The accommodation location is fantastic and walking distant to both, Bowness on Windermere and Windermere town centres. The accommodation was exceptionally presented, clean and accommodating to our needs as were the hosts. We will continue to visit the Wonky Burrow on every future visit we have to the Lakes!
