Wynbec Cottage receives high praise for its spacious, beautifully decorated interiors and modern amenities, making it a comfortable and inviting base for exploring Durham and the surrounding area. Guests consistently mention the cottage's cleanliness, well-equipped kitchen, and thoughtful touches throughout. The property is dog-friendly, with convenient parking and a lovely tearoom opposite. While some minor maintenance issues and the lack of nearby shops are noted, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests eager to return.
Cleanliness is frequently highlighted, with guests describing the cottage as spotlessly clean, immaculate, and very well maintained. Only one review mentions minor grouting issues in the bathroom, but this does not detract from the overall impression.
The location is praised for its peaceful setting and proximity to attractions like Durham, Beamish, and Newcastle. The tearoom and pub nearby are appreciated, though some guests mention the lack of shops within walking distance. Overall, the location is considered convenient and pleasant.
Guests consistently comment on the comfort of the beds, sofas, and spacious layout. The cottage is described as a home from home, with plenty of room for families and groups. Modern furnishings and thoughtful design contribute to a relaxing stay.
Facilities are highly rated, with modern appliances, electric car charging, multiple TVs, and a well-equipped kitchen. Some minor issues are noted, such as the size of the outdoor table, a shower flooding incident, and a need for more saucepans, but these are outweighed by the overall quality and range of amenities.
Many guests mention welcome packs and hampers on arrival, as well as provisions for dogs and families. While these thoughtful touches are appreciated, it should be noted that such gifts are not guaranteed for every stay.

This is a great spot for walkers and cyclists with many established public footpaths from the village leading into the scenic countryside of County Durham. Close by, is the historic City of Durham, awarded unesco World Heritage Site status, where you can visit the cathedral and castle or enjoy beautiful riverside walks, take a boat out on the river or a leisurely riverboat cruise. The Lumiere Festival takes place every couple of years in November and brings the city to life with live art, music and light shows in the open air theatre that the city becomes.
Visit the fabulous Kynren outdoor spectacle in nearby Bishop Auckland (but do book in advance). A little further afield but still within an easy 30-minute drive, guests will be able to take a day trip out to the popular Beamish Living Museum, see the famous Angel of the North statue in Gateshead, enjoy a day’s shopping at the Metro Centre and explore the vibrant city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. We enjoyed our recent stay at Wynbec cottage. The accommodation itself is roomy and is tastefully decorated throughout to a high standard. The location was ideal for us and generally quiet with not much passing traffic, what there was was not intrusive at all.Had a lovely Sunday lunch at the nearby Cross Keys inn which is only a mile away and well worth a visit. There's a great grassy and wooded space just across the road where Harvey our dog enjoyed walking and exploring.Shame the tearoom just opposite closed just before we got there as I was looking forward to a few full English breakfasts!Would definitely book again.

This is a really lovely place to stay. The rooms are beautifully decorated and furnished, and everything you need is there. The large kitchen-diner is perfect for families.

We booked the cottage over the New Year to visit family who live in the area. The house was perfect for a family group of six. There are plenty of places to visit in the area Beamish, Alnwick and Durham being just a few. If you have young kids Diggerland and Adventurel Valley are also great places to let off steam!! The property was well equipped and it was great to have off road parking for two cars. We loved it so much that we rebooked for later on in the year
