Whin Hill Cottage in Alnwick, Northumberland, is praised for its cleanliness, spaciousness, and prime location close to the coast and local amenities. Guests appreciate the well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, and the large garden, especially those with dogs. The property is ideal for family stays and offers a cosy, home-from-home experience.
The property is consistently described as spotlessly clean, with high standards of cleanliness throughout. One review mentioned the need for better cleaning in less obvious places, such as the cutlery drawer.
The cottage's location is highly praised for being in the heart of Craster, close to the Jolly Fisherman pub, coastal paths, and within easy reach of Alnwick. It's considered perfect for walking and exploring the coast.
Guests find the beds comfortable and the living areas cosy. However, some reviews mention issues with the heating control and noise from the plumbing system, which affected the overall comfort during the night.
The property is well-equipped, but several reviews cite problems with the hot water system, noisy plumbing, and insufficient hot water for the number of guests. There are also mentions of a faulty dishwasher and a lack of clarity on recycling.
While some guests were disappointed with the welcome pack, finding it basic compared to expectations, the provision of cleaning products and hand soap was noted. As gifts are not consistently mentioned across reviews, a score cannot be provided.

Known for its oak-cured kippers, which have graced the best breakfast tables for more than 150 years, Craster is a charming village that appears to tumble into the sea. It was a significant fishing port in the 17th century. The community has a pub with a dining room, a fish restaurant, and Robson's renowned fish market. There is also a fantastic playground for kids. Several of Northumberland's best sandy beaches are close by. Howick Hall, which was constructed in 1782 and has connections to the Grey family, notably Earl Grey the great social reformer and tea aficionado, is located not far from Craster. The grounds at Howick Hall are accessible to the public in the spring and summer, but the rhododendron season is when they are most impressive. You can reach the impressive ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, the largest ruined castle in Northumberland, by taking a stroll along the seaside path north of Craster.

The only points we would like to raise are that the hoover didn't work and there was no floor mop so trying to keep on top of things when having two dogs with us for the weeks holiday was a little frustrating. There was only a small dust pan brush hence, we purchased a large brush so we could sweep the ground floor daily. The oven could also do with a deep clean, we cleaned it as best we could as it was very dirty and assume that previous guests have left it in an unsatisfactory condition. Only other point is, we noticed several reviews on-line regarding the water system and hot water. We had no problem with hot water but the noise from the system has not been addressed and does make a lot of noise when the hot water is running, probably just needs a new ball valve on the tank.

Thank you!

However lack of hot water for the weekend and the dishwasher not working did spoil it a little. Heating engineer called and agreed the on the water issue yet the owner couldnât explain or accept responsibility, some guests left early so they could go home to shower and wash. No hot water or dishwasher meant all washing for 8 guests had to be with hot water from a kettle !!
