Known for its oak-cured kippers, which have graced the best breakfast tables for more than 150 years, Craster is a charming village that appears to tumble into the sea. It was a significant fishing port in the 17th century. The community has a pub with a dining room, a fish restaurant, and Robson's renowned fish market. There is also a fantastic playground for kids. Several of Northumberland's best sandy beaches are close by. Howick Hall, which was constructed in 1782 and has connections to the Grey family, notably Earl Grey the great social reformer and tea aficionado, is located not far from Craster. The grounds at Howick Hall are accessible to the public in the spring and summer, but the rhododendron season is when they are most impressive. You can reach the impressive ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, the largest ruined castle in Northumberland, by taking a stroll along the seaside path north of Craster.

Spotlessly clean, decorated & furnished to a high standard and with every possible item you could want or need provided. The beds were comfortable with good quality linen, the showers worked well with plenty of hot water and the underfloor heating system was effective (once we understood how to use it). The location was perfect, just a short walk to the Jolly Fisherman pub and its well known restaurant, close to the coastal path and to many other villages like Alnmouth. We will certainly stay here again when in the area.

An excellent location right in the heart of Craster. Yes we would recommend the cottage as a good place to stay. However, on the negative side the hot water cylinder is noisy and we had to resort to switching the power to it off when we went to bed and switching it back on in the morning so that it didn't disturb us during the night, plenty of hot water though. Also the blind in the main bathroom doesn't cover the window as the chain is broken. It was a bit off putting that when we arrived late on a November night all the radiators upstairs, except the landing one, had been turned off and it was very cold in the bedrooms and the "welcome" pack was rather basic with no fresh milk. We did enjoy our stay and found Turnbull's and M&S Simply Food in Alnwick very handy.

Our stay however was marred by the problems with the water system. Hot water was insufficient for 8 people and upon complaint it became clear that the system was faulty despite several calls to Sykes Cottages (who handled things well) and attempts to resolve it. The noise from the plumbing is awful and anyone using the taps or toilet during the night would cause disturbance. There must be a fundamental issue with the plumbing system which needs resolving. We appreciate a goodwill gesture made by the owners but wish we hadn't had to suffer these issues whilst on holiday.
