Situated in the lovely town of Kirkoswald in Cumbria, Ona Ash is a one-of-a-kind, Grade 2* Listed longhouse, dating to the 17th-century. Boasting a thatched roof, original features, and exposed beams for a characterful stay, with an enclosed, secluded garden surrounded in wildflowers, Ona Ash is a wonderful base for families, friends, and couples alike to enjoy a rural retreat, providing a well-equipped kitchen, high-quality furnishings, and antiques.
Step inside to discover the open-plan kitchen, dining and living space where you can rustle up home-cooked meals in the company of your loved ones; alternatively, move to the outdoor furniture to enjoy alfresco dining in the enclosed garden.
Back inside, the sitting room welcomes you for relaxing afternoons in front of the TV before retiring for the night. Ascend the staircase to discover three beautifully adorned bedrooms, 2 doubles, and twin all cater for flexible sleeping arrangements and have plenty of storage to hold your personal belongings.
Along the hallway, take a soak in the Victorian sunken bath, perfect to rejuvenate at the end of a fun-filled day, or freshen up in before heading out for an afternoon of adventures.
When you’re ready to explore, Kirkoswald has plenty to fill your days including Kirkoswald Castle, Lacy’s Caves and the impressive Neolithic stone circle Meg and Her Daughter’s. Further afield, history lovers will not want to miss the opportunity to visit the 14th-century fortress of Penrith Castle, head to the Grade 1 listed Hutton in the Forest, or take a trip back in time on the steam train at South Tynedale Railway. Brougham Castle can be found just outside of the town and Penrith and Eden Museum are also only a stone’s throw away where you can immerse yourself in the history of the local area and learn more about its heritage.

Kirkoswald, a charming rural village in the Eden Valley, is well located for exploring the North Pennines and the Lake District, two areas of outstanding natural beauty. A 12th-century church, two top-notch pubs offering high-quality food, a store, and a post office are all positioned in Kirkoswald. The area is renowned for walking, cycling, canoeing, hiking, and excellent salmon, and trout fishing along the neighbouring River Eden. There are miles of beautiful walkways that follow the course of the river and provide inviting areas for picnics and sightseeing. Expect gorges and caves throughout the trip and keep an eye out for the ten unique benchmark sculptures. One of Cumbria's best-kept secrets is the Eden Gorge, which is between Lazonby and Armathwaite. It is worth exploring, and the nearby train station is a stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, one of the country's most picturesque rail routes. A short journey will take you to Brougham Castle, Long Meg and her daughters (the third-largest stone circle in England), Hadrian's Wall, the town of Penrith, and the ancient city of Carlisle. Kirkoswald is a good location to stay because the beautiful scenery of the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Parks are both accessible from there.

There was not a full set of any glasses(3 champagne flutes and 2 whisky tumblers for 6), chipped cups and plates, blunt knifes and no steel, torch with dead batteries, washing machine that won't spin, tumble drier full of soil, bed with the laths fallen through and the mattress on the floor. For a Christmas break that was twice the cost of the rest of the year it was disappointing. The paths were lethal and a note warning that they were slippery would have been best served by spraying with algae remover and a blast off. Although winter, the garden looks like it hasn't been tended for some time. The parking to the side is steep and over grown and due to the wet weather getting 2 cars on was difficult. The lovely picture of the lounge with the log burner is misleading. It was only on reading other reviews, after booking, that we found out we could not light it, when it was one of the deciding factors for booking, When we tried cancelling we were told we couldn't as is was booked under a special booking reserve clause that was binding. 4 adults staying for Christmas week we arrived with quite a bit of food but it lacked storage. An under counter fridge with ice box does not hold much. The pantry at the bottom of the stairs is not very cold and we spoilt some food by leaving it here, The utility room it spacious and could hold a bigger fridge freezer. The lack of shower could also be resolved by putting one in the utility. It is a pity that what could have been a special holiday was spoilt by attention to detail

With a few tweaks it could be even better. We really enjoyed our week there. One bathroom for a property sleeping 6 is not ideal. Guests should be reasonably fit as the stone spiral staircase, several steps up and down in unusual places and very low headroom at times means you have to take care.

It was a great place to relax whilst snow fell outside. There are so many original features that make this cottage feel full of history. It was a shame we couldnât light the log burner at it was cold and snowy. We went horse riding in Penrith as a family outing, the company was called âHappy Hoovesâ. It was great fun, and the staff were very friendly.
