Aspen in Penrith is praised for its peaceful setting, friendly staff, and well-equipped lodges, making it ideal for couples and small families. Guests particularly enjoyed the hot tub, the on-site restaurant, and the presence of peacocks and ponies. The property is centrally located for exploring the Lake District. While most found the accommodation clean and comfortable, a few noted minor maintenance issues with outdoor areas and the need to bring towels and essentials. Overall, visitors found it great value for money and would happily return.
Most guests found the lodge spotlessly clean and well-presented, with high-quality bed linen and tidy interiors. However, a small number of reviews mentioned stained carpets and an older hot tub, which slightly lowered the score.
The property is described as central and convenient for Lake District attractions, with peaceful grounds and lovely surroundings. Some guests noted that shops are a short drive away, but overall the location is highly regarded.
Guests frequently commented on the comfort of the beds and the cosy, homely feel of the lodge. The accommodation is considered perfect for couples and small families, with a relaxing atmosphere.
The hot tub, on-site restaurant, and grounds with animals are highlights. Some guests mentioned tired decking, limited cooking equipment, and the need to hire towels, as well as occasional maintenance issues, which affected the score.
Staff are described as friendly, helpful, and accommodating, with special mentions for assistance during check-in and maintenance. While guests appreciated the service, there is no mention of gifts, and amenities like towels are not included as standard and must be hired. Please note that any special touches or assistance are not guaranteed.

Images are representative and may not be the specific accommodation assigned on booking.. Calthwaite Hall is uniquely set on the footprint of the barns used for a historic dairy farm and accompanying country house and gardens, this truly magical setting mixes historic country living with contemporary sophistication. Calthwaite maintains the traditions of a Cumbrian village with the old style estate sandstone village with church, primary school and worker cottages. The historic, gothic hall is at the centre of the village yet cleverly maintains the feeling of a hidden hideaway with formal lawned grounds and ornamental ponds designed by William Sawrey Gilpin, historic listed features such as the Portuguese Sweet Chestnut Specimen tree, hidden folly and veteran trees where cuckoos can be heard. No wonder the Howard family (of Castle Howard fame) previously used this as a country residence.
A range of accommodation can be found at Calthwaite Hall to suit everyone including romantic micro-lodges, luxury country cottage and contemporary, cosy lodge style holiday homes. Whichever you choose enjoy a steamy, bubbling hot tub with views to the Cumbrian starry skies or soak up the sounds of the resident peacocks calling to each other alongside the gentle neighing of cute Falabella miniature horses.
Perfectly placed to easily access the popular areas of the central and northern lake district. Calthwaite Hall also makes for easy journeys up to the Scottish borders or amble across into the western Pennine foothills. Traditional market towns, historic Roman remains, isolated fells and stunning waterfalls are all a short drive away.. The hall and grounds are so peaceful and calming. The animals are so nice to be around. The lodge itself could do with a little TLC to the decking area and outdoor furniture. The lodge really could do with fly nets too and a bigger bin for the kitchen, However the inside is lovely, The beds are really comfy, had the best nights sleep! The staff are so helpful and friendly. The pub across the road has great food and a lovely beer garden with games for the kids. The lodge site could do with a green area for seating, picnics and sunbathing as there wasn’t much outdoor space. We would come back here though great value for money!
Confirmed Guest
Poorly maintained lodge and outside decking area. Hot tub very old and dirty. Stained carpets etc…

Not far from all attractions. Really central. We haven’t been to the Lake District in a couple of years so we really enjoyed the area.
