Guests say

This summary has been generated using feedback from guests who have stayed at this property

Gun End Cottage is highly praised for its beautiful, peaceful location and cleanliness. Guests appreciate the well-equipped kitchen, comfortable furnishings, and the lovely garden, despite it being smaller than some expected. The property is ideal for family gatherings and offers a cosy atmosphere with a warm open fire. The lack of Wi-Fi is noted, but the presence of games and local attractions seems to compensate. Overall, the cottage offers a delightful stay with picturesque surroundings and is recommended for those seeking a rural retreat.

Cleanliness

The cottage receives high marks for cleanliness, with multiple reviews mentioning it being very clean, well-presented, and immaculate. This suggests that the property is maintained to a high standard of cleanliness.

Location

The location is consistently described as peaceful, beautiful, and ideal for walks and exploring the countryside. Its proximity to local attractions and the quiet rural setting contribute to a high score, although parking difficulties for multiple cars slightly affect the rating.

Comfort

Comfort is a strong point for Gun End Cottage, with guests finding the property warm, welcoming, and comfortable. The presence of a conservatory and spacious rooms adds to the comfort level, though a few minor comments about bed comfort and soft settees slightly lower the score.

Facilities

The cottage is praised for being well-equipped, with a good array of kitchen facilities and utilities. However, some guests noted thin-bottomed pans and the absence of Wi-Fi, which suggests room for improvement in the facilities and maintenance category.

About this property

This charming Peak District cottage, featured on Homes Under The Hammer, is located on a quiet lane in the hamlet of Swythamley, 5 miles from Leek. Constructed in 1904, this wonderful Peak District cottage offers four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fully-equipped fitted kitchen and a sitting room with a lovely open fire. Expertly renovated, the cottage retains some of the original features including leaded windows and tiled floors. There is a sun room and a large garden with lovely views of the Staffordshire countryside. The full extent of the cottage's transformation was featured in the popular TV series Homes Under The Hammer. This Peak District cottage is an easy drive from the market towns of Leek and Ashbourne, while Alton Towers is 40 minutes away. An excellent base for making the most of the area, and a welcoming Peak District cottage to return to time and again.

The farming community of Swythamley sits close to the River Dane, on the Staffordshire side of the river yet still in the beautiful area know as The Peak District. Local Swythamley Hall, originally a hunting lodge belonging to Abbey of Dieulacres, stands in fine parkland. The area has much historic significance – close by is Gun Hill, where Cromwell is believed to have located his canon aimed at the town of Leek. On the edge above Swythamley there is a famous landmark - the Hanging Stone, with a fine view over the surrounding countryside. There is fine walking and climbing on The Roaches, and many lovely cycle trails in the area. Alton Towers, Leek, Buxton and Ashbourne are all within easy reach.
