Guests say

Gun End Cottage receives high praise for its charming character, spaciousness, and peaceful rural setting, making it ideal for families and groups. Guests consistently highlight the well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, and thoughtful touches for children. The cottage is noted for its cleanliness, warmth, and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and sheep. While a few minor maintenance issues and the absence of WiFi are mentioned, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests eager to return.

Multiple reviews mention the cottage being very clean and well presented, with only rare minor comments about small marks or tired areas. Overall, guests are very satisfied with the cleanliness.

The location is frequently described as beautiful, peaceful, and ideal for exploring the Peak District and nearby attractions. Guests appreciate the rural setting, lovely views, and proximity to walks and local pubs.

Guests find the cottage spacious, cosy, and comfortable, with warm rooms and comfy beds. There are occasional mentions of a soft settee and one less comfortable mattress, but these are outweighed by positive feedback.

The cottage is praised for being very well equipped, especially the kitchen, and for providing toys, games, and useful amenities for families. Minor issues such as the absence of WiFi and a DVD player, and a dishwasher that doesn't fit large plates, are noted but do not detract significantly from the overall experience.

Guests appreciate thoughtful touches such as toys for children, a well-stocked information folder, and, in some cases, welcome gifts like biscuits, milk, and tea/coffee. Please note that such gifts are not guaranteed for every stay.

About this property

This charming Peak District cottage, featured on Homes Under The Hammer, is located on a quiet lane in the hamlet of Swythamley, 5 miles from Leek. Constructed in 1904, this wonderful Peak District cottage offers four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fully-equipped fitted kitchen and a sitting room with a lovely open fire. Expertly renovated, the cottage retains some of the original features including leaded windows and tiled floors. There is a sun room and a large garden with lovely views of the Staffordshire countryside. The full extent of the cottage's transformation was featured in the popular TV series Homes Under The Hammer. This Peak District cottage is an easy drive from the market towns of Leek and Ashbourne, while Alton Towers is 40 minutes away. An excellent base for making the most of the area, and a welcoming Peak District cottage to return to time and again.

The farming community of Swythamley sits close to the River Dane, on the Staffordshire side of the river yet still in the beautiful area know as The Peak District. Local Swythamley Hall, originally a hunting lodge belonging to Abbey of Dieulacres, stands in fine parkland. The area has much historic significance – close by is Gun Hill, where Cromwell is believed to have located his canon aimed at the town of Leek. On the edge above Swythamley there is a famous landmark - the Hanging Stone, with a fine view over the surrounding countryside. There is fine walking and climbing on The Roaches, and many lovely cycle trails in the area. Alton Towers, Leek, Buxton and Ashbourne are all within easy reach.
