River Cottage in Bakewell offers a tranquil, picturesque setting ideal for nature lovers and walkers, with local amenities and welcoming pubs nearby. Guests appreciate the cosy, homely feel and the beautiful views over the river valley. The steep approach and parking challenges are noted, yet many find the seclusion worth the effort. The property's charm and location are often highlighted, with some guests returning for multiple stays.
Reviews on cleanliness are mixed, with several guests finding the cottage to be comfortable and well-maintained, while others reported issues with cleanliness and maintenance. Some guests mentioned the property being 'filthy dirty' and 'damp', which suggests room for improvement.
The location is highly praised for its peacefulness, beautiful setting, and proximity to local walks and amenities. The steep path to the cottage is a consideration for some, but it contributes to the property's quiet and secluded charm.
Guests generally find the cottage comfortable, with cosy furnishings and a homely atmosphere. The presence of a log burner and comfortable beds are often mentioned, although there are some suggestions for updating mattresses and providing better heating controls.
Facilities are generally well-received, with a well-equipped kitchen and a spacious bathroom. However, some guests noted the need for a washing machine, better lighting, and more thorough maintenance. The steep access may also impact the ease of using the facilities for some guests.
While guests have mentioned thoughtful touches such as a Christmas tree and wreath during the festive season, there is not enough consistent information across reviews to assess the overall thoughtfulness of the host in providing gifts or extra amenities. Therefore, this score is set to null.
A lovely, traditional, stone-built property, River Cottage is the gable end of a row of quaint cottages situated on a steep hillside in the pretty village of Youlgreave, 4 miles from Bakewell. The cottage is full of charm and character with a delightful sitting room and a mature garden area with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. Due to the exceptional location of this cottage, the only noise that you will hear is the sound of the river. A footpath leads from the cottage down to the Bradford Dale valley bottom where there are lovely riverside walks and numerous picnic spots, while Youlgreave's old pubs and magnificent church are just a short stroll away. An ideal romantic retreat from which to explore the beauty of the surrounding National Park, Bakewell, with its regular market, Matlock and the unmissable Chatsworth House.
Set in outstanding countryside, Youlgreave is an ancient village between the valleys of Lathkill Dale and Bradford Dale, two of the most stunning areas in the Peak District. It was once the centre of the lead mining industry but is now a charming tourist destination. The village has three public houses, all of which serve food, two shops, a post office and a beautiful medieval church with some parts dating back to the 13th and14th Centuries. The market town of Bakewell is nearby and has a wide selection of shops and eateries along with its Monday market. With so many stately homes, beautiful scenery and outdoor pursuitsthe Peak District has so much to offer as a holiday destination and Youlgreave makes a perfect base to explore this lovely area.

Good array of cooking equipment and utensils. An iron and ironing board.Even a cafetier for anyone who likes proper coffee .Three excellent dog friendly pubs serving great food.Bakewell or Matlock just a short trip away.Friendly helpful owners made the cottage easy to locate. If you are reasonable mobile I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this cottage for a wonderful break away.A dream for birdwatchers, photographers or artists.

Lovely views and would have sun for most of the day. The decent to the property, down a steep narrow footpath/lane, would not suit all. We loved that aspect of it, but may be a negative for others. Dawn/Owner was extremely helpful with directions and access info. Very responsive to messages. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, would definitely return.

A little slice of heaven in a gorgeous little valley! I stayed with my 8yr old son and 10yr old daughter and they absolutely loved it! They asked me to say that the cottage is gorgeous and they want to go back next year! The walk down from the road is what sets it apart for us, if a true peaceful getaway is what you're truly after.
