River Cottage in Bakewell is praised for its peaceful, beautiful setting and cosy atmosphere, with many guests enjoying the local walks and wildlife. The steep access and parking challenges are noted, yet the location's tranquility and proximity to the river and village amenities are appreciated. The cottage's charm and potential are acknowledged, despite some calls for updates and maintenance.
Reviews on cleanliness are mixed, with several guests finding the cottage to be in a satisfactory state, while others reported issues with dust, cobwebs, and uncleaned areas. Some guests also mentioned that bins were not emptied and the BBQ was not cleaned.
The location is highly praised for its beauty and tranquility, with easy access to local walks and village amenities. However, the steep path to the cottage is a consistent concern, particularly for those with mobility issues or when transporting luggage.
Guests generally find the cottage comfortable, with a warm atmosphere and good heating. However, some guests mentioned issues with the beds and sofas, suggesting that updates could enhance comfort levels.
The cottage is well-equipped for most needs, but guests have reported maintenance issues such as blocked toilets, loose taps, and the need for redecoration. The absence of a washing machine and the state of some appliances were also noted.
There is insufficient information in the reviews to assess the level of thoughtfulness in terms of gifts or special touches provided by the hosts. Therefore, a score cannot be given for this category.
A lovely, traditional, stone-built property, River Cottage is the gable end of a row of quaint cottages situated on a steep hillside in the pretty village of Youlgreave, 4 miles from Bakewell. The cottage is full of charm and character with a delightful sitting room and a mature garden area with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. Due to the exceptional location of this cottage, the only noise that you will hear is the sound of the river. A footpath leads from the cottage down to the Bradford Dale valley bottom where there are lovely riverside walks and numerous picnic spots, while Youlgreave's old pubs and magnificent church are just a short stroll away. An ideal romantic retreat from which to explore the beauty of the surrounding National Park, Bakewell, with its regular market, Matlock and the unmissable Chatsworth House.
Set in outstanding countryside, Youlgreave is an ancient village between the valleys of Lathkill Dale and Bradford Dale, two of the most stunning areas in the Peak District. It was once the centre of the lead mining industry but is now a charming tourist destination. The village has three public houses, all of which serve food, two shops, a post office and a beautiful medieval church with some parts dating back to the 13th and14th Centuries. The market town of Bakewell is nearby and has a wide selection of shops and eateries along with its Monday market. With so many stately homes, beautiful scenery and outdoor pursuitsthe Peak District has so much to offer as a holiday destination and Youlgreave makes a perfect base to explore this lovely area.

The path down to it was very steep and we struggled with the luggage a little that said as soon as we were in the cottage it felt like home immediately. Beautiful autumnal bradford dale just a few metres away with as much or as little walking as we wanted and so much to see and explore we never used the car all week apart from a quick call to the shops for some food one day we spent all our time walking by the river so peaceful and relaxing so much so we're have already been back to walk it again after returning home!!! Would highly recommend the cottage for anyone wanting to get away from it all and relax. The cottage had everything we needed and felt homely and warm will definitely be booking to come back soon 5 days was just not enough

The gardens were still very colourful even in September. The cottage has a beautiful south facing aspect in an idyllic location.

There was a damp smell in the cottage and on the bedding which was unfortunate and the toilet completely blocked on day two. Perfect size for a couple, but a tad too small for a family of four and a dog. The cottage is within a lovely village with three pubs and a few shops. Perfect for us. Beautifully situated within a short walking distance of the river with nice walks. It is, however, on a very steep bank so if mobility is an issue, this is not the cottage for you. Bakewell and Matlock are close by and are lovely for spending a few hours there seeing the sights and visiting the shops and river. The garden is massive, however, not secure as the gate (which is shared access with other cottages) does not lock (broken) and dogs/small children could easily escape. The very bottom of the garden leads straight onto the roof of someoneâs shed on which the roof has partially collapsed. Not entirely safe for animals and young kids. It is a shame that the lower part of the garden is not maintained as it could be absolutely beautiful if a little care was given to it. Communication with the owner was good before and during our stay and they can offer tips and advice on places to go and see and walks to take part in. They can email local walks, but we did find a laminated pack in the cottage with lots of suggestions on. All in all, we had a nice weekend break and would give 3/5 stars.
