Guests say

River Cottage is a charming, cosy retreat in a stunning riverside location, perfect for walkers and nature lovers seeking peace and beautiful views. Guests praise its well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, and tranquil setting with easy access to scenic walks and friendly village pubs. While the steep path to the cottage may challenge those with mobility issues, most found the effort worthwhile for the idyllic surroundings. Some maintenance and cleanliness issues were noted, but the majority of guests enjoyed a restful and memorable stay, often expressing a desire to return.

Most guests found the cottage clean and welcoming, but several reviews mention issues such as dust, musty smells, dog hair, and occasional reports of poor cleaning standards. A minority reported more serious concerns, including bed bugs and mould, though these were not universal experiences.

The location is widely praised for its beauty, tranquillity, and proximity to riverside walks and village amenities. The steep, cobbled path is frequently mentioned as a challenge, but most guests felt the setting more than compensated for the effort required.

Guests consistently describe the cottage as cosy, warm, and homely, with comfortable beds and a welcoming atmosphere. Occasional comments note the cottage is snug for larger groups, and a few mention damp smells or the need for new mattresses, but overall comfort is rated highly.

The cottage is generally well-equipped, with a good kitchen, hot water, and a log burner. Some guests noted maintenance issues such as a blocked toilet, lack of a washing machine or freezer, and minor repairs needed. Facilities are functional and suit most guests’ needs, though some improvements are suggested.

Several guests mention helpful and responsive communication from the owner, and a welcome phone call was appreciated by some. While no gifts are guaranteed, the provision of local information and walking guides was valued. Some guests experienced delays or communication issues, but most felt well looked after.

About this property

A lovely, traditional, stone-built property, River Cottage is the gable end of a row of quaint cottages situated on a steep hillside in the pretty village of Youlgreave, 4 miles from Bakewell. The cottage is full of charm and character with a delightful sitting room and a mature garden area with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. Due to the exceptional location of this cottage, the only noise that you will hear is the sound of the river. A footpath leads from the cottage down to the Bradford Dale valley bottom where there are lovely riverside walks and numerous picnic spots, while Youlgreave's old pubs and magnificent church are just a short stroll away. An ideal romantic retreat from which to explore the beauty of the surrounding National Park, Bakewell, with its regular market, Matlock and the unmissable Chatsworth House.

Set in outstanding countryside, Youlgreave is an ancient village between the valleys of Lathkill Dale and Bradford Dale, two of the most stunning areas in the Peak District. It was once the centre of the lead mining industry but is now a charming tourist destination. The village has three public houses, all of which serve food, two shops, a post office and a beautiful medieval church with some parts dating back to the 13th and14th Centuries. The market town of Bakewell is nearby and has a wide selection of shops and eateries along with its Monday market. With so many stately homes, beautiful scenery and outdoor pursuitsthe Peak District has so much to offer as a holiday destination and Youlgreave makes a perfect base to explore this lovely area.

It is a proper fully equipped, old fashioned air bnb (not an investment property pretending to be a hotel). Easy heating system and loads of hot water. The access is via a very steep path so suitable for strong fit walkers.

The location is perfect, if you love the feeling of being amongst nature, hearing bird song, amongst trees and the river close by then this could be an ideal choice. Hard to get to but well worth it. Beautiful walking trails are on your doorstep and within easy reach too. We could easily have stayed another week !! Cottage is clean with a very comfortable bed, enjoyed our stay immensely, thank you !!!

However the it was in such a lovely location. We had a wonderful few days, just listening to bird song and the walking from the gate is just superb. We were blessed with amazing weather and spent a lot of time sat outside or laid on the lawn. I would suggest more detailed directions as it states it is the path opposite the pub car park when it is in fact a little further up. Another tip if you have a folding sack barrow take that as it saves trips. lol
