Derwent House looks like the dream house a child would draw, with its charming Georgian proportions. Built in 1753, it comfortably sleeps up to twelve guests in six bedrooms, and with five bathrooms, several living areas and an outdoor courtyard, it is spacious without feeling imposing. The house is on a quiet street in Matlock on the edge of the Peak District National Park, just a short walk from the Remarkable Hare bar and restaurant, as well as Matlock’s numerous independent shops, cafes and pubs. Derwent House is also within walking distance of the train and bus station, and there are good local transport links if you do not drive or do not want to spend your holiday behind the wheel.
As the county town of Derbyshire, Matlock has excellent amenities, and its streets are lined with pretty stone buildings and surrounded by beautiful countryside. Derwent House is named for the river that runs through the town that offers not only wonderful fishing opportunities but also lovely walks. Hall Leys is a great place for the kids to let off some steam while you sit and admire the gardens. In addition to trains that run to Nottingham and Derby, Matlock station is a stopping point for Peak Rail, with vintage steam and diesel trains that take passengers through the gorgeous landscape to Rowsley.
Nearby in Matlock Bath, the Heights of Abraham cable car has been thrilling visitors with incredible views for generations. The 60-acre park opened in 1780 at the height of Matlock’s popularity as a spa town and features two stunning underground caverns, an exciting adventure playground, Victorian folly tower and a collection of footpaths that make the most of the gardens and scenery. Matlock Bath is also home to the fascinating Peak District Lead Mining Museum, an aquarium, and Gulliver’s Kingdom theme park, so there is no shortage of activities to make everyone’s day.
Other attractions to consider for a day out include magnificent Chatsworth House and Bakewell town, the Crich Tramway Museum, Ladybower Fishery and Blue John Cavern to name just a few.
The Peak District has so many fantastic opportunities for walkers with some the national parks finest starting from and around Matlock. Stretch your legs on a five-mile loop that takes you from the town along the Derwent River to Matlock Bath before returning through woodland to High Tor. The three-mile walk between Bonsall to Cromford not only gives lovely views but lets you work up a justified appetite for a wedge of cake or pub lunch when you arrive, or wander through the peaceful Lumsdale Valley. Nearby, other areas popular with walkers and cyclists include the Dovedale Valley and Manifold Valley, Carsington Water, White Peak and Kinder Scout.

Outside: There is a private courtyard at the rear of the property, accessed via the kitchen, with garden furniture. Parking is on the street in front of the house, with three parking spaces available in the cricket club behind the house. Secure bike storage available.
Additional Information: All utilities, linen and towels are included, as is a basket of logs for the log burner. The owners can provide a cot and high chair, as well as a day bed that can be used to accommodate an extra child if necessary - please ask when booking. One well-behaved dog is welcome with prior agreement from the owner. Weekend breaks are possible (three night minimum). No smoking.
