The Old Bulls Head is a well-received holiday rental with guests praising its cleanliness, spaciousness, and prime location in the heart of the Peak District. The property's character and amenities, including a hot tub, pool table, and well-equipped kitchen, contribute to a comfortable and enjoyable stay. While there are some minor maintenance issues and interactions with a neighbour, the overall experience is positive, with many guests looking forward to returning.
Guests consistently note the property's cleanliness, with several reviews highlighting its spotless condition upon arrival. There are a few mentions of minor issues, such as stained carpets, but these do not detract significantly from the overall perception of a clean and well-maintained property.
The location is highly praised for its convenience, with easy access to local shops, pubs, and restaurants, as well as proximity to walking trails and tourist attractions. The central position in the market town and the availability of parking add to the appeal.
The property is described as comfortable and homely, with spacious bedrooms and communal areas. Some guests mention issues with seating and bed orientation, but overall, the comfort level is regarded as high, contributing to a pleasant stay.
Facilities like the hot tub, pool table, and darts board are popular among guests. However, there are comments about the kitchen size and appliance capacity being inadequate for large groups, as well as minor maintenance issues. Despite this, the range of amenities is appreciated.
Several reviews mention a welcome pack with treats and prosecco, which guests found to be a thoughtful touch. It should be noted that such gifts are a pleasant surprise and not a guaranteed feature of every stay.
Resting at the heart of Chapel-en-le-Frith, a market town in Derbyshire on the fringes of the Peak District National Park is The Old Bulls Head. The former pub has been thoughtfully renovated into a wonderful holiday home with a stylish interior that pays homage to the building’s history through exposed brick and beams, stone fireplaces and Victorian tile, the perfect setting for a large family gathering. After exploring the wealth of surrounding attractions, cross the threshold into your new home-from-home and make your way into the kitchen adorned with blue subway tiles and all the appliances to whip up tasty meals for the whole family. Gather around the table in the dining room to tuck in before branching off to take advantage of the house’s amenities; turn the table into the snooker table for evenings full of competitive fun or head outside to delight in a soothing soak in the hot tub, an idyllic place to watch the sun set. When yawning begins, catch your rest in any of the six bedrooms; travel to the first floor to choose from a double with en-suite shower room, a double or a twin, or continue to the second floor to find a king-size, a double and a twin all serviced by a bathroom, shower room and cloakroom. The Old Bulls Head lies paces away from local shops where you can stock up on necessities and pubs including The Kings Arms and The Royal Bar and Grill, both perfect for the nights when you don’t fancy cooking. Venture to the historic town of Buxton to tour Buxton Museum and Art Gallery, Buxton Park, and Poole’s Cavern where you can marvel at a network of underground limestone caves. Travel into the Peak District National Park, where outdoor enthusiasts will be in their element with the myriad of walks, trails and cycling opportunities available such as Hope Valley, Monsal Head and Parkhouse Hill which all reward guests with breath-taking, panoramic views across England. Make unforgettable memories with the whole family at The Old Bulls Head.
With its cobblestone market, historic old stocks, and Eccles Pike, a gritstone hill that becomes pink at the summit and offers expansive 360-degree views, Chapel-en-le-Frith is referred to as the Capital of the Peak. The well-known spa town of Buxton is only seven miles away; in addition to its healing spring water, it is also well-known for its magnificent Victorian Opera House, Pavillion Gardens, and a number of shows that draw tourists from all over the world. Numerous sights, including magnificent homes like Chatsworth House and Lyme Hall, are only a short drive away. The Devil's Arse, Blue John, and Speedwell caverns are famed in Castleton and the Goyt Valley. On the western side of the Peak District National Park, in a magnificent rural environment, is the charming small village of Chinley. It is well-liked by walkers who are drawn to the routes across the dramatic Cracken Edge that connect to Kinder Scout, Edale, South Head, Mount Famine, and Chinley Churn. With the village's assortment of pubs serving award-winning ales, cafes, and restaurants, visitors are well-served. After hiking Combs Moss and Castle Naze, visitors can enjoy a supper at the country tavern in the tranquil village of Combs, which takes pleasure in serving food made with high-quality ingredients. On the northern border of the Peak District National Park, in a lovely rural environment, is the charming High Peak village of Hayfield. It's a quiet small village that attracts many walkers because to Kinder Scout's close proximity. Families (and those who prefer more leisurely strolls) travel west along the lovely Sett Valley Trail in the direction of New Mills, while serious hikers travel east out of the village up and over the green foothills to the russet expanse of the Kinder Plateau, Pennine Way, and Snake Path. Only a few miles separate you from Edale, another starting point for the Pennine Way.

The hot tub and snooker table were very popular. The house is well located for beautiful walks and all necessary grocery shopping. Two negative points, though: the towels provided were very small, and there was no heating on the morning we left, so we spent a chilly couple of hours having showers and breakfast - not sure if this was a fault with the boiler or a deliberate policy to make sure we didn't stay too long !

The Old Bulls Head far exceeded our expectations, what an amazing building! Extremely spacious yet still super homely with lots of character. It was lovely and clean from top to bottom with plug ins throughout making it smell amazing. It was also lovely and warm on arrival. The beds and bedding were soooooo comfy, a factor that quite often lets down stays like this but not here. We had no trouble at all cooking all 3 nights for 12 for with the oven and large air fryer provided and plenty of crockery & cutlery meant we could still function while the dishwasher was in use. The location is great, shops, bars, restaurants and walks within minutes. The pool/snooker, darts & hot tub went down an absolute storm with the kids. There is nothing we can knock, just wish we had stayed longer!

However difficult to park in the dark . A light would be helpful. It would be good if the high chairs and travel cot were on the property listing. It clearly says on the Sykes website that no other facilities available on request. The kitchen is not adequate for 12 people . We had 9 adults and 2 children and struggled for space in the fridge, freezer and oven. Had to leave food in the back porch (fortunately it was cold ) Plenty of plates, bowls, mugs and kitchen equipment though. The lounge was cold and when we turned the gas fire in the corner on, there was a strong smell of gas. It may be that the radiators downstairs need bleeding. One of the light bulbs was not working when we arrived. This was not a problem but I would expect them to be working when I arrive. Hot tub was great and neighbours lovely (despite what previous guests said) Despite all the above issues, we had a great weekend . Great dining round the big table and lots of pool was played . We had a great day out in Buxton and enjoyed the boat trip in Speedwell Caves
