About this property

Spindrift is one of the oldest cottages in Polperro, Cornwall. Having just been fully refurbished to a high standard mixing elements of this traditional Cornish fisherman's cottage with a contemporary style and modern luxuries. It is set over four floors with unique, original features and sea and harbour views, making this dwelling ideal for a family or group of friends to explore this stunning part of the Cornish coast. The cottage is located on the South West Coastal path with direct access from the front door of the property. A designated parking space is available to guests, a rare treat in this bustling coastal village; park up with ease and get settled into your home-from-home with charming, cottage doors, wooden floors, exposed stone walls and feature fireplaces, making it a picturesque setting brimming with character. After a day at the beach, or walking the south west coastal path which runs past the front door of the property, leave your shoes in the boot room, off the entrance hall and head down to the basement, spotting the original reclaimed church balustrade on your way, where a kitchen/diner is well-equipped for hosting family dinners and catching up with loved ones. Set the dining table for six and make use of the fantastic facilities, such as a coffee maker to kick-start your day, a wine chiller for the evenings, and electric steam oven and induction hob. There is even a Smart TV to entertain children whilst waiting for their meals. With a plush corner sofa beckoning guests to curl up amongst the cushions, Spindrift houses the perfect sitting room on the first floor for a games night, peaceful evenings or a movie on the Smart TV, while the woodburning stove adds extra warmth when needed. Sitting on the sofa you can look out to see and watch the waves crashing on the rocks at the entrance to the harbour.

Each guest has a quaint space for resting weary heads ready for the next day's adventures; the lower-ground-floor king-size, ground-floor double and first floor twin are all bright and airy with glimpses of sea and harbour views and are equipped with storage space and beautiful, original cottage features. Treat yourself to a relaxing soak in the fabulous free-standing rolltop bath, situated in the pretty ground-floor bathroom, or energise your day with a hot rinse in the walk-in shower. With well-behaved dogs welcome, there is plenty of space to keep your pets' beds.

Exploring the village of Polperro, you will find plenty of shops and eateries for your self-catering holiday, with a variety of pubs and restaurants within easy reach, alongside excellent attractions such as the Harbour Heritage Museum, set on a beautiful harbour scattered with whitewashed cottages to wander along and admire the spectacular coastline. Be sure to visit Looe, Cornwall's second largest fishing port just a short journey away, whether by car or taking the coastal walk which passes a 6th century monastery; arriving in Looe, catch the river taxi between the East and West, scour the narrow cobbled streets for the perfect souvenir, and take to the popular beach for safe, shallow swimming and long stretches of sand to relax on. Travel east to Fowey, a port town with plenty to discover, such as the ruins of St Catherine's Castle first built in the 1530s, perched above the sea for picture-perfect views, whilst the centre is home to seafood restaurants to taste the local cuisine, the family-friendly Fowey Aquarium, or head to Lantic Bay for rugged coastlines scattered with tiny coves waiting to be explored. Boat trips to both Looe and Fowey can be booked from the harbour in Polperro, making it an exciting way to see this part of south Cornwall. To discover the history and outstanding landscapes of the Cornish coast, Spindrift is the perfect setting to house you and your loved ones.

On the south coast of Cornwall's shoreline, Polperro is a well-known tourist destination with a historic fishing community. Visitors come from all over the world to see the sheltered fishing harbour and its surrounding tangle of picturesque whitewashed homes. Take a leisurely lunch overlooking the harbour, walk the narrow alleys, visit the Smugglers Museum, and climb the clifftops for a taste of the stunning coastal views. This is a wonderful spot with plenty of attractions to behold.

We found the property to be poorly maintained, not very clean and certain aspects to be dangerous.

Spindrift cottage is in a lovely position but there were a few things that marred our experience on this occasion. The cottage is very damp. We started off in the larger double bedroom but our clothing stared to feel damp and smell musty so we relocated to the upper double bedroom which is very cramped. We aired the cottage with windows open whilst in situ, it didn’t make any difference. The lounge was lovely and really the only room pleasant to be in. When we left we stripped the bedding as requested and saw how badly stained the mattress protectors were which made us feel horrible. One of the protectors even had pubic hair stuck to it. Having holidayed with Sykes for many years this isn’t the standard I’d come to expect. Due to the moisture levels in the cottage black mould has started to grow in grouting around the kitchen sink and bathroom window. This will not prevent me booking with Sykes again as this was one bad experience but I feel it’s important to convey what we found. We had to contact the caretaker, Donna, on one occasion as an alarm started sounding and she was extremely helpful in resolving the issue promptly. Unfortunately we broke a glass water carafe whilst washing up. The neck of the carafe was thin and I knocked it on the tap which caused it to crack so will need to pay for a replacement if required. There was only one wine glass do we had to use champagne flutes instead. This was just a small thing but counts. Kind regards Kerry O’Prey
