The Shippon in Devon is highly praised for its stunning views, peaceful and rural setting, and friendly hosts. Guests appreciate the well-equipped and comfortable accommodations, ideal for families and pet-friendly. The property's proximity to local attractions and natural beauty spots adds to its charm, with many looking forward to returning.
Guests consistently describe the cottage as clean, tidy, and immaculate, indicating a high standard of cleanliness maintained by the hosts.
The location is celebrated for its beautiful views and proximity to local attractions, though one mention of nearby traffic noise slightly impacts the perfect score.
Reviews frequently mention the comfort of the cottage, with its cosy setting and well-furnished spaces. A single mention of a worn mattress suggests room for improvement.
The property is well-equipped, with a special nod to the kitchen. However, the lack of handrails and basic barn setup in one review suggests some areas could be enhanced.
Guests have noted the hosts' thoughtfulness, mentioning welcome gifts like tulips, milk, and coffee. While these gestures are appreciated, they may vary with each stay.
The Shippon is one of two beautiful barn conversions on Wyke Farm, the owner's 17th century, grade II listed farmstead that lies just outside the market town of Axminster, and is surrounded by the glorious rolling countryside of East Devon. With views that stretch over the Axe Valley, with the popular resort of Lyme Regis on the Dorset Jurassic Coast just 5 miles away, this is a perfect destination for a peaceful and relaxing holiday where you are well positioned to explore the coast and countryside on your doorstep. Facing out across the countryside, a gravel pathway slopes up from the parking to the patio and gravel garden. Step inside into the open plan living space with vaulted ceilings, beams and a full length patio doors and windows, this room is bright and welcoming. A country kitchen sits at the far end of the room and two squashy comfortable sofas are centrally positioned providing the perfect spot for relaxation whilst soaking up the warmth of the fire (Starter pack only for fire provided) and taking in the beautiful views through patio doors. Raised up a level, the dining area allows you to enjoy the full view of this lovely room. Two steps up from the dining room takes you to a twin room and double room with super-king bed that can be divided into two singles. There is a family bathroom at this end of the barn. At the opposite end, three steps lead down to the master double with stable door, TV and en-suite shower room. Outside, a spacious patio looks out across the rolling countryside of the Axe Valley and is equipped with tables and chairs. There is a charcoal BBQ (charcoal not provided) available and plenty of parking. Axminster is just 2 miles away where you will find shops for provisions, a number of pubs and good restaurants and the River Cottage Canteen. River Cottage HQ is popular for weddings and is just outside the town. Family friendly beaches can be found at Lyme Regis and Charmouth, both close by where are also a number of lovely eateries, cafes and shops. Enjoy the South West Coast Path and if you are up for a challenge, a walk to the top of the famous Golden Cap, Dorset's heights point where the views are breath taking. For little ones, the Axe Valley Nature Reserve can be found just outside of Axminster, and the famous Donkey Sanctuary near Sidmouth is a must visit for any age. The Shippon is a wonderful rural getaway with the coast on the doorstep and perfect at any time of year.
Nestled in countryside, Axminster is certainly a place to relax and unwind, it is one of Devon’s smaller towns. Situated on the River Axe and within easy reach of both the West Dorset and East Devon Jurassic Coast, Axminster has many attractions, including plenty of privately owned shops, a weekly market and old inns, with one dating back 100 years and the famous River Cottage Canteen and HQ. The area is ideal for walking or cycling and with the Jurassic Coast just 3 miles away, Lyme Regis, Charmouth and Seaton are all within easy reach and offer an opportunity to walk the Coastal Footpath.

Would happily recommend.

The cottage was clean and well presented. Whilst some of the pictures/descriptions showed stairs we were unaware of the fact that there were no handrails which we felt was a health & Safety issue especially as 4 of us were 70 - 82 years old. Also the area to allow dogs free rein to run was some way from the cottage and on a significant slope which was difficult fr us oldies! However the cottage would be ideal for younger folk.

The Shippon was comfortable and spacious and with a huge field to exercise our two spaniels. Lots of places within 10 miles to visit with scenic walks to Golden Cap, highly recommend.
