Saunton Sands is a firm favourite with beginner surfers thanks to its gentle waves, three-mile stretch of golden beach and turquoise sea.

You’ll be just 150 metres from the start of the South West Coast Path, giving access to the breathtaking Braunton Burrows, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve rich in wildlife and rolling dunes. Braunton itself (2 miles) has local shops, pubs and a friendly village vibe. Or head to Croyde Bay (1 mile), located around the headland – a hotspot for surfers and sunseekers alike. Woolacombe (7 miles) is another popular spot, with its expansive beach and yet more sand, surf and scenic views. Golfers will be keen to check out the prestigious 36-hole Saunton Golf Club (0.5 miles).
