Primrose Cottage has been fully refurbished to a high standard and has envious views of the Salcombe estuary. Set in a relatively quiet, residential area of central Salcombe, yet within a very short distance of the town’s boutiques, restaurants and famous waterfront, this delightful former fisherman’s cottage makes a wonderful base for families looking for a comfortable accommodation. Due to the size of the accommodation, the property is suitable for a maximum of two adults and two children aged 10 and under.
The property has recently undergone a full renovation and is beautifully finished to a very high standard. It is accessed directly from the terrace into a cosy, light and airy open plan sitting room. The kitchen is small but well equipped, with a drop-leaf dining table with four folding chairs that can be stored away easily during the day. There are two bedrooms - a master bedroom with double bed and attractive window seat, plus a second room with comfortable 3' wide bunk beds suitable for children. There is also a family bathroom with bath and shower over.
The sunny, paved terrace to the front of the cottage has a table, chairs and bench seat – a fabulous spot for an al fresco drink after a busy day exploring the South West Coast Path. The long-stay car park is a five-minute walk away.
With views over the north bank of the estuary and the entrance to Batson Creek from the terrace and the living room as well as from the master bedroom, this fabulous property will suit those in search of a comfortable base, within a short level walk of Salcombe’s amenities.
Salcombe is a popular destination for watersports enthusiasts, walkers and families looking for a holiday by the sea. There are several pretty beaches within a short distance, including North Sands and South Sands, plus the coves East Portlemouth on the opposite side of the estuary, just a short passenger ferry ride away. Also on your doorstep is the National Trust property Overbeck’s where you can wander through the subtropical gardens. Why not have a more adventurous day and try out the watersports available on the estuary including surfing, coasteering, kayaking or a more leisurely boat trip? Whilst staying in Salcombe, take advantage of the locally sourced seafood which is served in many of the restaurants, pubs, cafés and delicatessens. The southern tip of Devon provides some spectacular scenery and picturesque vistas with a number of sandy beaches, lovely villages with thatched cottages and some fantastic opportunities for walking on the South West Coast path.

The cottage is cute and it was as expected from photos and description. The parking etc is outside your control we expected to park elsewhere as itâs a fishermanâs cottage in an old town. The pubs etc and local area were very quiet and probably quieter than we expected but again that is due to the time of year and not in the Sykes cottages control. We would recommend the stay and Salcombe is a beautiful spot.

The view from the living room and main bedroom window are very nice. A perfect place for relaxing with a cup of tea and reading a good book in the window seat. I really enjoyed having a morning cup of tea in bed while looking at the view. I stayed at the cottage just out of season so it was very peaceful. It is close to shops and restaurants which is great if you don't have a car. However, there are a few things that I was not too happy about during my holiday. Firstly, the strong smell of air freshener in the pantry where the fridge is kept is very over powering and every time I opened the door to go to the fridge I would have a sneezing fit, it is not good to have very strong scents where food is stored and not great if you are allergic to strong smells. There were different air fresheners around the cottage, I did wonder if it was to mask the smell of a drain problem in the bathroom that I noticed when I arrived. Secondly, the bed sheets could be cleaner. Some of the pillow cases had black eye makeup on them and the duvet cover did not smell that clean and fresh. Finally, there was not a seagull sack, and I never received one from the office before the end of my holiday. I phoned 3, times about the seagull sack, and I asked if a new bag could be left outside my front door before the rubbish collection on Friday, (I did not want to be charged for not putting the bins out on time). There is nowhere to store a sack at the end of the walkway, there is just a wall and the road. I was told by the office that I would find one there... It would make more sense to store a sack at the side of the cottage, tucked behind the little wooden gate, ready to be used at the end of the week. I really did not want to spend my holiday phoning the office and being left on hold while they tried to sort out the issue. In the end I just bagged up the rubbish in black bin liners without the seagull sack because a spare bag never did turn up from the office as promised. Also, a notice in the cottage is not clear enough. It says the rubbish collection will be around 10am, on Friday, so I thought I would have plenty of time to put the bags out on Friday morning. I was actually woken up at 7.30am hearing the rubbish truck at the end of the lane, I had to rush out of bed to make sure they took the bin bags ok! This was not how I wanted to end my holiday, rushing about, making sure the rubbish was collected on time without the proper bin bag. I feel communication from the office should be better and there should be more clarity about the rubbish bag and collection time. Apart from these 3 things, I did have a nice holiday and I have tried to give a balanced and honest review about my stay at Primrose Cottage. It is a lovely little place but I feel it could be managed better to ensure a better holiday experience.

There were a few things: 1) Creek car Parking - I know nothing to do with the owner but it was a pain. Having booked a 6pm to 8am slot on Friday, Ringgo would then not let me book 24 hours so I had to book 2 sessions a day. The app sometimes let me book them back to back, sometimes not and I had to wait until the last minute to book. I notice that some cottages have a permit, maybe this could be an option. Happy to pay for it and it would have been so much easier. Also I don't understand why I couldn't just book a week's parking at a time (maybe lobby the council). Note that Shadycombe is not a long term stay car park as per the notes. Also there are no disabled concessions and only a few disabled spaces. Budget for just under £9 a day. 2) View - we reorganised the furniture so we could see the view from the inside of the cottage. Outside the view is blocked by a tree and a wall. 3) Courtyard - this is not private. People walked through and down the steps. Maybe one to point out when leaving doors and windows open that valuables should be put away. 4) Bring your own - 2 dishwasher tablets and 1 small loo roll for a week - ha'porth of tar comes to mind. 2 small bin bags that didn't fit the bin, no black bags as per instructions. No cling film or foil. No matches or utensils for the BBQ. One bag of charcoal provided, thank you (the Co-op sells small bags). No ash bin. Maybe warn people that the fridge is very small. We brought food that we couldn't store. There are lots of positives - very clean and beautifully furnished, minutes from the shops (Island Street and Fore Street), not on the water but very close by, lots to do, lovely bakery etc. Kind regards.
