Guests are enamoured with Smugglers, a cottage that combines tranquillity and proximity to Salcombe. Its idyllic location, beautiful decor, and comfortable setting make it a repeatedly chosen retreat. The garden and stream add to its charm, creating a peaceful oasis. While the cottage is mostly praised, a minor note on carpet cleanliness suggests room for improvement.
Reviews are overwhelmingly positive about the cottage's condition, with only a single mention of the carpet needing attention in high-traffic areas. This suggests a high level of cleanliness throughout.
The location is consistently described as idyllic, peaceful, and perfectly situated close to Salcombe. The ease of access to local attractions alongside the tranquillity of the cottage's setting is highly praised.
Comfort is a standout feature, with guests noting the cottage's charm and the owners' success in creating a comfortable home from home. The snug for children and overall cosiness are particularly appreciated.
Facilities are well-regarded, with guests expressing satisfaction with the cottage's amenities and decor. The mention of a helpful team suggests good maintenance support, although no specific facilities are detailed.
While guests express gratitude for the helpfulness of the team and the overall experience, there is no mention of gifts or specific thoughtful gestures that could be quantified in this category.
Tucked into the quiet green fold of a tranquil Devon valley forming part of the Salcombe estuary, rests Smugglers, a quaint grade two listed, 18th century traditional Devon stone cottage. Locations don't come much more enviable than this, perched at the head of the Batson creek, think postcard-ready dog friendly fisherman's cottage set right beside the water.
From the undeniably impressive and colourful interior design, to its position in idyllic Batson, Smugglers is a true original in our diverse portfolio of luxury holiday homes in Salcombe.
The Grade II listed mid-terrace cottage is situated at the head of the Batson Creek which forms part of the Salcombe estuary. It is stacked full of incredible features and has the most wonderful character. From reclaimed rudders and up-cycled ropes, to exposed beams and twinkly lights, this is a joyful Salcombe holiday home.
The sunny terrace in front of the cottage captures the sun for most of the day and is the perfect place for a cup of tea in the morning or an evening gin and tonic. The stable doors at the front of the cottage lead into the small but well-equipped kitchen and dining area. You can fit nine around the table, but elbows need to be politely tucked in! Look out for the lobster fairy lights around the sideboard…
Up a couple of steps you’ll find a good sized sitting room with wood burner. There are plenty of colourful features and gorgeous lamps to give a great feel to this room. Board games are stored in the cupboards for evening entertainment (or for a rainy day; we have to admit these happen from time to time!)
Upstairs to the first floor landing (which which is wallpapered with real charts) there are three bedrooms; two super kings and one twin. Each bedroom has beautiful tones, fabrics, light fittings and eclectic trinkets. There are two bathrooms for the house, one being a shower room with hanging mackerel light fittings, and the second a bath with overhead shower.
Going up into the loft area there is the perfect zone for children. A snug area complete with sofa, television and twinkly lights gives youngsters an escape from the adults and their own space to have fun. Up a few steps from the snug there are three single beds.
Up the road from the cottage is a separate garden to enjoy plus a table and chairs for outdoor dining. There is also an outbuilding where the washing machine and tumble dryer can be found.
When you arrive, a welcome gift of organic tea, Smugglers own blend of ground coffee and a bottle of wine will be waiting for you!
Please note: the outside garden areas are unsuitable for unsupervised young children as there is a small stream at the bottom of the garden.
Two dogs very welcome at Smugglers. Please note there is an extra cost for bringing along your four legged friend. Dogs will love snoozing by the fire and the sensational coastal walks from the front door!
No smoking allowed inside.
If you love the look of Smugglers but can't quite fill all of the bedrooms, there is a reduced occupancy version of the house sleeping up to 6 guests in 3 bedrooms called The Lost Lobster.

Beautifully decorated cottage. Very peaceful and a lovely walk into Salcombe. Very helpful just for when we arrived late and could not access code on phone. Great artwork. Lovely snug for the children. Overall a very cosy cottage with great attention to detail from the owners and a super special place to stay.
