Smuggler’s Retreat is a delightful, spacious, detached property, set amidst the owners’ 17th-century farm. Lovingly converted from a former barn, it retains plenty of character with beams, stone walls and feature floors, and is presented to a very good standard. The superb living area takes full advantage of the views, and the sunny patio is the ideal spot to relax and watch the waves and dine al fresco. The luxurious hot tub adds the finishing touches for a holiday to remember. The magnificent, rugged English Heritage coastline of Hartland and beyond runs across the farm in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offering a perfect haven for walkers and bird watchers. Narrow lanes from the doorstep wind down to secluded sand and shingle beaches. Berry Beach is just a short walk. Children will love the the donkeys Margot, Mavis and Elvis they are a favourite with vistors to Blegberry, and the large play field is the perfect spot for them to let off steam. The famous sandy surfing beaches of Westward Ho! and Bude are an easy drive and for family fun, the Big Sheep and the Milky Way adventure parks are close by. There are numerous National Trust properties in the area, as well as the RHS gardens at Rosemoor and Docton Mill. Clovelly with its quaint cobbled streets and picturesque harbour is a must. The village of Hartland is just 3 miles and has a good selection of village shops and pubs all serving good local produce. The historic port of Bideford with its lively market, Lundy Island ferry, array of shops and other amenities is just 15 miles. Golf, fishing, sailing, surfing and horse riding available locally. The new film The Salt Path starring Gillian Anderson was partly filmed here. Shops and pubs 3 miles.

I would 100% recommend this place if you want to get away from it and feel at peace (unfortunately still had to bring the children!). It is just a beautiful get away the views are amazing the cottage is great no complaints no requirements, the kids had the use of a great little play area and a games room. You can walk to a secluded beach admittedly a bit steep in the heat wave but worth it when you get there and can swim. I would have liked to have made more time to do some of the coastal path but beach days were the main thing for this holiday. I really really really want to book to come back! We actually didn’t leave a 10 min radius and none of the single track lanes until day 5 but depends what you want as to if you need to. We went to the hartland quay for dinner a couple of times and the kids did an evening swim there which was glorious! Cottage has comfy beds well equipped kitchen great hot tub, enough parking. I would say my only feedback was because the dog needs to be on the lead the whole time as a working farm, the garden could do with a permanent concreted in loop to attach the dog to we did use one that’s by the hot tub but not sure if that’s what it was for? We couldn’t screw our dog anchor into the lawn as too rocky. Other than that absolutely perfect!!

Lovely cottage, very clean and lovely hosts. Beach is a 30 minute walk away but is a difficult walk and wouldn't recommend for those with walking difficulties or young children.

Great place to stay! The property was clean, comfortable, and exactly as described in the listing. The host was very responsive and made the check-in proces smooth and easy. While it is a bit out of the way, the location was incredibly peaceful and relaxing. I would definitely recommend staying here if you want a quiet getaway!
