About this property

Gather your family and friends for a relaxed holiday at Hurstone House. This big holiday cottage is in Waterrow in Somerset, half an hour from the coast and close to Taunton and popular attractions like Sheppy's Cider Farm, Dunster Castle and Knightshays. The house, which is only half a mile from the river and village restaurant/pub, is dog friendly and accommodates 14 people in 7 bedrooms and has the potential to sleep two more in a separate annexe. Spacious and welcoming, guests have lots of space inside and out and enjoy amenities such as a games room with a pool table and an outdoor hot tub. Family celebrations, relaxed weekends with friends, retreats to clear your mind, soothe your soul and lift your spirits are what Hurstone is all about.

Hurstone House is a spacious country home on the edge of Waterrow near Taunton, half a mile from The Rock Inn pub/eatery, with gorgeous views in all directions. Big groups of family and friends deserve a big holiday home with oodles of space inside and out. Hurstone delivers on every level, from its seven comfortable bedrooms for 14 guests to beautifully maintained grounds with an outdoor hot tub. The house is dog-friendly, and if your group is a little larger, or you would like an extra room instead of sharing, there's a separate annexe available to increase accommodation to 16. The setting is as ideal for fun and adventure as inspiration and relaxation.

Waterrow is an idyllic village close to Somerset's border with Devon. Once a farmhouse, Hurstone has been part of the landscape for over 600 years, joining other centuries-old cottages and farmsteads. It only takes 10 minutes to walk from the cottage to the River Tone and the village pub, though take your time to enjoy the quintessentially English village scenery with stone walls, abundant hedgerows, and ancient holloways, or green lanes, worn smooth by generations of footsteps. Shops, tea rooms and other amenities are nearby in Wiveliscombe, Wellington, Bampton and Dulverton, and there are half a dozen excellent farm shops and markets within half an hour, including Ruxstons, Wiveliscombe and Rumwell.

A pool table and lawn croquet provide plenty of entertainment at the house. Step outside, and you're close to a Nature Reserve only a short drive from Exmoor National Park. Days out can include Sheppey's Cider, where you can tour the factory, buy their cider and other local goodies from the farm shop, admire the apple blossom, and tire the kids out at the petting farm and play area. If gorgeous interiors and beautiful gardens are your thing, you'll love Kinghtshayes and Hestercombe House, while Cleve Abbey allows you to admire 15th-century carvings in a serene setting. Diggerland is a must for any age - keep an eye out for their adults-only events where you can let your inner child loose! Other local attractions are Tropiquaria Zoo, the Tiverton Castle and Tiverton Canal, the West Somerset Railway, Dunster Castle and the Exmoor Pony Centre. A day at the beach is also possible as you're only half an hour from the Somerset coast.

Whether you're planning a relaxed holiday with friends, arranging a family celebration, or need the perfect space to host a retreat, Hurstone House is the ideal large holiday cottage in Somerset.

Accommodation Comprises:

Hurstone started life as a farmhouse and has grown over the centuries to meet the needs and standing of its owners. Though large, it feels delightfully welcoming, as if you're staying with a favourite relative.

Downstairs:

  • Step through the front door into the large hallway with doors leading to the dining room and the games room.
  • The smaller of the sitting rooms, affectionally know as the snug, is the first of several reception rooms. It's a cosy space in the original part of the farmhouse, featuring a deep fireplace with a log burner, original oak beams, a piano, and plush velvet Chesterfield sofas.
  • There's a door between the sitting room and the large drawing room. Along with original beams and a fireplace with a wood burner, there are sofas and armchairs where everyone can sit and watch a movie or sports on Sky TV, play a game, or sit with pre-dinner drinks and admire rolling rural views.
  • Between the hallway and the dining room is the games room with its snooker table.
  • The dining room is another wonderfully welcoming space and the perfect environment for memorable meals with your favourite people. The table seats 14 and there is a drop leaf table as an extra if needed. A wood burner keeps you cosy and adds to the welcoming country vibe (logs provided).
  • Guests love the kitchen as it is practical and well organised while still being a lovely space to spend time. It is well equipped with group self-catering in mind and includes a dual fuel range cooker with a five burner hob, a second oven and two dishwashers.
