A mediaeval town with an abundance of half-timbered Tudor structures, situated on the junction of the Rivers Severn and Avon. Tewkesbury has around 350 ancient buildings that are protected by the conservation area designation, making it one of the outstanding mediaeval Black and White townscapes in the UK. There are many unique boutiques, tea rooms, restaurants, taverns, and wine bars in addition to the town's spectacular abbey, which dates back to the 12th century and boasts the highest Norman tower in all of England. Numerous vintage and food fairs, as well as country and farmer's markets, take place in town all year round. With the Severn Way and Shakespeare's Avon Way both passing through the area, the town serves as a convenient starting point for a number of scenic hikes. Cheltenham, a nearby regency spa town, is home to beautiful examples of Georgian architecture as well as a plethora of excellent dining options, entertainment venues, and relaxing watering holes. The city also hosts a variety of other festivals celebrating anything from literature and jazz to science and cricket, as well as food, drink, and humour. In addition to the yearly, world-famous Gold Cup races, the racecourse hosts a number of other horse racing events throughout the year. There are Roman ruins, Victorian docklands, and a magnificent Norman cathedral in Gloucester, the cloisters of which were utilised as a filming site for the Harry Potter movies. Excellent day trips can be taken to the Royal Forest of Dean, the Slimbridge Wetland Centre, the World Heritage city of Bath, Shakespeare's birthplace of Stratford-upon-Avon, the historic city of Warwick, and several quaint villages and towns in the Cotswolds.
