About this property

This former agricultural property is an idyllic escape for one or two people looking for quiet and solitude, outdoor activities and a variety of nearby attractions. It is located in the hamlet of Burlton, which is 6 miles from the picturesque market town of Wem. Explore the surrounding countryside on foot or by bike – perhaps doing the circuit of Colemere Lake, 4 miles away – or have a go at paddleboarding at Alderford Lake (11 miles). Venture to the woodlands, cliffs, crags, caves and follies of Hawkstone Park Follies (10 miles), or enjoy some retail therapy in the many independent shops of Shrewsbury (also 10 miles), where you’ll find an array of historic buildings and a choice of excellent places to eat and drink. Delightful Oswestry, with its weekly markets, regular events and heritage railway, is 16 miles away. For anyone attending a wedding at Burlton Manor, it’s easily reachable at just 3.5 miles away.

From your parking space at the front, turn and appreciate the tranquil rural views before strolling through the lawn garden and heading into this gorgeous two-storey converted pig sty. You can leave coats and walking boots in the porch before stepping into the spacious, open-plan living space, which is full of light thanks to its wall of windows and glazed double doors. Thoughtful details are dotted throughout, from the chess set and eye-catching art works to a fabulous chaise longue by the window – a perfect spot for relaxing with a book and a glass of wine. The pretty kitchen is a delight for the cook, featuring a high-quality coffee machine as well as a dedicated wine cooler. When you’re ready to eat, choose between the breakfast bar for two or the dining table by the window. As well as a comfortable sofa there’s a Smart TV for evening entertainment. Feeling tired? When you’re ready for a good night’s sleep, the first-floor landing leads to a handsome king-size bedroom at one end, and a stunning shower room at the other.

On dry days you won’t be able to resist spending all your time outdoors, basking in the sun in the large, Mediterranean-style patio. Take supper outside and relish the tranquillity of this delightful area, perhaps spotting birds as they flit between the nearby trees. You might also want to take a cup of coffee or a bite to eat and enjoy a few quiet moments in the small, shared woodland opposite the cottage. There is also driveway parking for 2 cars.

Sylva Cottage proved to be the perfect "country retreat". On arrival we received a lovely warm welcome from Sally the owner, who lives close by. The cottage is immaculate. The decor, furniture and fittings are to a very high standard throughout. The underfloor heating was much appreciated, especially as winter is approaching. Great heating system and easy to adjust if necessary. The kitchen area is a nice size and well equipped for two guests. The coffee machine is a real bonus! The lounge area is very comfortable and looks out onto the enclosed private courtyard, which I'm sure will be lovely to sit in the summer months. Upstairs the bedroom is warm and cosy and has plenty hanging/drawer space. I must stress we found the bed to be so comfortable and dressed in nice quality bedding - we slept so well every night - so peaceful. Many Thanks for the delicious cupcakes, and the lovely bottle of chilled wine - how thoughtful. All in all we loved our stay and would have no hesitation to book another "retreat" in the coming summer months. It's a really good base, and there are plenty of places to visit if you fancy a drive.
