Big Cottages & Group Accommodation in Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury is a historic market town in the county of Shropshire, situated in the West Midlands and just 9 miles east of the Welsh border. The town was originally a settlement upon the River Severn, and its largely unaltered medieval street plan makes it a wonderful place to enjoy a cottage holiday with family or friends. Shropshire has over 650 listed buildings, including the famous Shrewsbury Castle that is well worth a visit if you are planning a spontaneous getaway.

The biggest attraction in town is the annual Shrewsbury Flower Show. Hosted over two days each year in August, the horticultural event is one of the largest and oldest in the UK. 100,000 visitors make the trip every summer, will you this year for your Big Cottages break? If you can't make the show then at least enjoy the wonderful flower displays that the town is famous for throughout the spring and summer months. Shrewsbury is a historic town with plenty of art, history and great restaurants to keep you entertained, and will be a fantastic choice for your trip.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • David - Verified booking

    This is an amazing place.

We visited in February 2024, finding that this place was big enough for us to holiday with some friends of ours. They have a family of five and we have a family of four, making 9 people in all, including 5 children (all under 10 years old). It’s nice that it’s a bungalow so you don’t have to worry about stairs and children falling down them, and it didn't feel in any way cramped with all the people staying there. This place is it is massive! All the rooms are a good size, but the kitchen / diner / living room is just huge, and a great place to hang out. The weather was just ok while we were here, but that didn’t matter as there was plenty of space to play for the kids without having to be outside all the time. It’s also a very quiet place. When you look out the window all you see is fields, and a little pond/lake. It’s worth mentioning that it is brand new. This is a great thing, as almost everything in it is new, but there were a couple of ‘teething problems’ when we were there. The owners were very quick to respond to our issues, but we’re aware this is common when things are new. We couldn’t for the life of us work the record player, for example, but the owner has said she will put in instructions to make this easier to use. We experienced a small leak of water during the heavy rain above the main sliding doors too, but again, the owners addressed this. They were only small and understandable things, and nothing that stopped our stay there from being a great one. It’s worth mentioning that it’s a bit of a drive to the nearest shops. There’s a Co-op in Wem 12 minutes away, but Lidl & Tesco are a 20 minute drive away in Shrewsbury. Not big issues, but just worth being aware of. Despite the weather, we did still manage to get out, enjoying visits to Shrewsbury, Hawkstone Follies and Chirk Castle. All of these places were lovely, and there were plenty of other things we could have done if we were there for longer. There’s certainly plenty to do in the area. We couldn’t really fault the place. It’s a great holiday home and we had a great time there. It had everything we needed, and we would love to stay there again, which is why we’re rating it 5 stars.

I stayed at Grange Barn a couple of weeks ago with some friends and we all loved it!

The single-storey accommodation is very spacious and built to a high standard. Despite its size and exposure, it’s very warm and cosy with underfloor heating and good insulation. It is also very well equipped, not just in terms of furniture, kitchen equipment etc. but also in terms of supplies provided by the owners, which far exceeds what most other such accommodation offers. The owners are also very helpful and responsive, I found them a pleasure to deal with. There are 4 good sized bedrooms, one double bed and 3 kings that can be split into singles, the 2 bathrooms (1 ensuite) are spacious with large walk-in showers and dual shower heads, a rain shower and a handheld one. There is also another toilet with a sink, making 3 in total. Even the hallway is spacious and has its own sofa! The coup de grâce is the open lounge and kitchen, it’s enormous and extremely sociable for entertaining and celebrating. It also helps that noise is not an issue, even if the bluetooth Bose speaker (also connected to a vinyl record player) is at full blast. The large, enclosed patio will be brilliant during the summer, the owners already have outdoor furniture and a BBQ would be a welcome addition. We didn’t manage get to get the outdoor hot tub going due to bad weather but it’s another indication of the quality of the accommodation. The secluded location can be difficult to find, the postcode is useless and will take you to the wrong place, using what3words (https://what3words.com/library.flexibly.unlisted) and/or following the owners’ directions is your best bet. The coordinates for the venue are 52°50'53.3"N 2°48'48.3"W – you should be able to enter these into Google Maps to find the exact location. The venue can be used to explore the local meres or for more varied and challenging outdoor activities both the Shropshire Hills and Clwydian Range & Dee Valley areas of natural beauty are around 45 minutes drive away. I highly recommend Grange Barn as a venue and intend to go back at some point.

The Generals Quarters surpassed our expectations.

beyond measure! We booked it for our son's 30th birthday, but what a fabulous location for a celebration of any kind. In fact there is also an orangery, in the grounds, which would be perfect for weddings with the Generals Quarters for accommodation! I was slightly nervous that there were steps to the entrance, as my 88 year old mother was travelling with us. The owner kindly put my mind at rest and I'm so glad that we went ahead and booked! My mother loved the place so much, we regularly found her whizzing up the stairs. alone (which are easy and have a good hand rail) so she could explore the surrounding premises! We were lucky to meet up with Nick who was restoring another wing of the house. He really brought the place to life so much, answered our endless questions and showed us lots of interesting features we would otherwise have missed. The panelled dining room was fabulous for our celebration and we appreciated the huge basket of logs for the beautiful fireplace fire too. With two staircases and such a wide choice of bedrooms and lounges and the pool room, we had a lot of fun just getting lost in the glory of it all for the first few hours! The kitchen is well equipped - we'd pre-prepared our food for ease, but it has a double oven cooker and lots of crockery, cutlery, glassware The grounds are fabulous and the photos of the outdoor area which is part of the Generals Quarters really don't do justice to how lovely this space is. In the wider grounds, the treehouse is just so quaint and rather incredible to think that Queen Victoria watched a hunt from here when she was a young princess! Recommended without hesitation and we are just looking for an excuse to go back!

    This is an incredible property.

History oozes from every beam and flagstone. The location is magical, you feel like you are in your own private world. 13 of us spanning from the ages of 2 to 95 stated here for my birthday. We had an incredible time. It is true that for the older members we had to be careful due to the 16 steps down to the house but the owners opened up a lower door for us. We had to carry my grandma up six steps in her wheelchair but she felt like it was the entrance of the Queen of Sheba so loved it. For such an old historic property it is incredibly well appointed and very clean. Of course there are issues with bits of restoration needed and the odd cobweb here and there but that is to be expected. It is an ongoing project in a Tudor house. The occasional power cuts in one side of the house could be seen as annoying, or you could just go to the fuse box and flip the switch and see it as an adventure. The internet is sketchy but fine in the sitting rooms and the big bedroom I stayed in upstairs (which was breathtaking) and you are having a break so maybe park those incessant Instagram flicking sessions for a while! The grounds are lovely. The treehouse is stunning and the orangery with peacocks was very peaceful. I cannot overstate how much I love this property. If you are looking for a pristine, sterile, modern, luxury box then go somewhere else, but if you have any kind of a soul and imagination then stay here. It was transformative for me for a week. A complete and utter joy from start to end. I cried when I left as I did not want to leave. Amazing.

Lovely property with everything we needed for the stay provided, but looking a little tired and needed a good clean in some places with plenty of cobwebs!

Entrance hall is very welcoming, especially when sunny, and useful for stripping off wet clothes after rain before moving into the inner hall, but loose cables could do with pinning to the wall. Living room was nice but the couches were too soft and difficult to stand up from, the entrance door was sticking, and the room could benefit from some table lamps. The main TV was only connected to wi-fi so main channels could only be reached through catch-up. Bedrooms were clean and beds comfortable, but two of the shower trays were showing signs of age and use. Lovely large kitchen with plenty of utensils, cutlery, dishes, glasses, etc, and a good large fridge. One of the small units needs repair and spoilt the overall look, but otherwise the kitchen and utility are well stocked. It was very useful to know that Sainsburys (and maybe others) deliver direct to the door. The garden was a little overgrown and in need of some maintenance, but was fully enclosed, exactly what we needed for two dogs. However, the lights outside the back door appeared not to work which made it difficult when the dogs went out late at night. The noise from the trains was certainly no issue, especially as the line was closed from the second day! And the late night goods train only provided a background rumble. With a few minor tweaks and maintenance, Station House would be restored to perfection.
