Fern Cottage is a beautifully presented, new-build holiday cottage and makes a delightful and peaceful base for a family getaway to Yorkshire. Surrounded by mature pine trees and with a large enclosed dog-friendly garden with a private hot tub it is ideal for exploring York, The Yorkshire Wolds and the coastline beyond.
Enter into a large hall offering coat and boot storage. A ground floor twin room sits to one side which is perfect for those who do not enjoy stairs. The large family living room with a huge L-shaped sofa and large picture window allows for a great family space for an evening in. The spacious kitchen/diner will be the heart of this family home, the country style kitchen offers a host of modern appliances. There is plenty of worktop space to prepare a delicious evening meal or for a tasty picnic to enjoy at the beach. A breakfast bar provides seating for two and you can come together as a family at the large dining table. Retire in the evening to the first floor and find three well-presented bedrooms. A twin room with low sloping ceiling and Velux window and the master super kingsize zip and link bedroom with en suite toilet and sink facilities. The accommodation is completed by a house shower room. Fern Cottage benefits from an enclosed dog-friendly garden providing a large neatly trimmed lawn, a patio area with additional seating and a private hot tub. During the summer months enjoy alfresco dining or relax on an evening surrounded by bubbles and watch the night sky.
A short walk will bring you to a popular Thai restaurant and you can also head into the thriving village of Pocklington which is known as the gateway to the Wolds. Here you will find a local pub as well as a couple of supermarkets, with a market every Tuesday. Directly opposite is a bus stop which will take you into York or over to the coast. Running seven days a week it’s a great option should you wish to leave the driving to someone else! In less than a 30-minute drive, you will locate the walled city of York. Whilst here, you can visit the Gothic-style cathedral, step inside the time capsule of the Jorvik Viking Centre, or enjoy the vast array of shops, restaurants and pubs within the city.
Nearby, for children, you have York Maze, Piglets Farm as well as Flamingo Land theme park and zoo. There are some wonderful walking trails nearby making this a great destination for hikers as well as dog lovers. Take time to explore the stunning Yorkshire Wolds or head into the Howardian Hills and visit Castle Howard, home to both Brideshead Revisited and more recently Bridgerton. Burnby Hall and Gardens are close by along with many National Trust and English Heritage properties. Make this beautifully presented holiday home the base for your Yorkshire break. My family spent a week at Fern cottage, visiting York and the surrounding area. Here is our thoughts on the accommodation:Good points:Well located for York. Hot tub was good and we made lots of use. The owner was very quick to pop over when we had a question and we appreciated the selection of goodies they had left as a welcome gift. Dogs loved the large garden. There was plenty of towels for use with both the hot tub and normal bathroom. The Indian takeaway within walking distance was excellent. Half-moon Inn is highly recommended for a meal out.Bad points:Beds are really really uncomfortable and the pillows are not any better. The stairs carpet looked dirty but I guess it’s from people going up with feet still wet from the hot tub. The roof windows all need a deep clean - you can’t actually see out of a couple of them. The little bedroom that has the boiler in is ridiculously hot. A cottage for 6 people needs more than 2 large glasses (plenty of wine / fizz / gin glasses). The cottage is situated next to a caravan park (with a caravan directly overlooking the hot tub), car wash and off a very busy main road. This wasn’t as noisy as we had initially worried but still not ideal for quiet / secluded holiday.We did enjoy our week at Fern cottage but I’m afraid it’s not one we would look to book again.

Home owner lives on site. They left a welcome basket with home made cakes, wine, tea coffee etc They dealt with any minor issues very quickly. Eg needed a new tin opener as 1 in cottage didn’t work, hot tub started to foam so they came and balanced the chemicals same day.Left a bottle of wine when they learned it was my birthday. Bus route to York very convenient. Walking to 2 restaurants we tried both. Clean comfortable quiet. Hot tub a definite bonus.No use ports so bring plugs.
