This detached cottage offers stunning views over the glen, and some seclusion for a peaceful break.. "Acres of peaceful and secluded countryside surround these magnificent cottages..."
At the heart of Glenprosen, one of the renowned ‘Glens of Angus’, lies the Balnaboth Estate on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park; 6,000 peaceful and secluded acres surrounding 16th-century Balnaboth House. In its midst, these six characterful holiday cottages each offer a unique and magical holiday retreat; indeed the creator of Peter Pan himself (Sir James Barrie) was born in nearby Kirriemuir and holidayed here.
These cottages were once occupied by shepherds, gardeners or other staff of the Ogilvy family when this was a traditional Victorian sporting estate. Red squirrels play in the trees, otters frequent the burns, and deer graze all around. Because of the varied scenery, that varies from beech woods to forest, pasture to heather moor, mountain streams to river pools, the area enjoys a spectacular range of wildlife, including species largely extinct elsewhere in Britain, such as black game and ptarmigan.
Magnificent walking, bird-watching, mountain biking and (in season) cross-country skiing abound on the estate and, further afield, downhill skiing at Glen Shee (25 miles). Fishing is available on a 5-mile stretch of the River Prosen, and there are twenty golf courses within an hours’ drive.
Enjoy the seclusion of this beautiful glen - peaceful, relaxing, scenic - yet just a few minutes’ drive from bustling market towns and busy fishing harbours which hug the Angus coastline, as well as from the city of Dundee which offers many attractions for all the family. The exciting Dundee Contemporary Arts is a stunningly-designed centre which incorporates galleries, a print studio and two art-cinema screens, while the Mills Observatory is Britain’s only full-time public observatory with a resident astronomer.
Good road, rail and air access to Angus provide easy access from all parts of the UK or international destinations. Shop 9-10 miles.

Beautiful cottage very well equipped with everything you could need during your stay. Had the most wonderful few days here, lots of exploring the local area and further afield so a perfect base for adventures . Such a wonderful view out of the window in a morning watching birds using the feeders. Would love to come back and stay for another break

Traditional cottage in a fantastic location, upgraded heating has helped make it more comfortable, especially when making use of the wood burner. But remember it’s not a modern fully insulated centrally heated home, but the price reflects this. Great walks from the front door, and dog proof garden surrounding the property. Shops a 10 minute drive away, a very quiet glen to explore with hills all around for the more adventurous.

Overall I really enjoyed my stay at Buckhood. It's a fairly large old estate/farmhouse type of property and it's pretty isolated with the nearest property roughly half-mile away. I'm not a doggy person and I don't like staying places that smell of dog so I was apprehensive about that as it's listed as being very pet-friendly. But I need not have worried. Whether it's down to a very good cleaning regime or lots of very clean dog guests, the house smelt fresh and clean to me. I'm sure if I looked close enough I'd find some dog hairs somewhere but nothing obvious. The location is perfect for me- perhaps it's quieter than normal due to the road being closed to through traffic at the moment, but I doubt it ever gets very busy so if you're looking for a break from neighbours and a very relaxing location, you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere better.I found that the cottage had everything I needed in terms of cooking and other utilitarian stuff. Not the most plush or modern of equipment but basic, functional and pretty standard for holiday rentals; I did feel compelled to do some basic maintenance whilst there- tightening pot handles and lubricating a lock or two! From the comments in the guest book it seems others have done the same. Bit of added value for the owner there ;-)I did have cause to call the owner about something and they were responsive and helpful so no issues there. There is definitely an old-fashioned vibe in the place, from a coin-operated payphone (not seen one of those guys for a few years), to electricity meter reading duties payable by 'cheque or cash'.... don't let that put you off.. but I'll just say that's it's very important that the first thing you do when entering the property is to read the meter! Then read the detailed instructions once you're settled and have a bit more time. Also, locate all the heater off-switches/controls (there's a variety of designs). I'll say no more! I was more bemused than annoyed by this rather anachronistic way of running a holiday let, but they do have their (well explained) reasons.I hope to return, perhaps every year or more often, if I'm not barred for the comments in the last paragraph !
