Smithfield House is a modernised home set on a farm, with beautiful rolling hills affording gorgeous sunsets. It is slightly remote with the sleepy village of Tarbolton a short walk away. Here there is a pub (with lovely staff serving great food), two convenience stores and a take-away. Also, there is a bus service into local towns. It is only 10/15 minutes by car to the coast. Shortly after our arrival, we were warmly welcomed by our neighbour from the farmhouse. We were pleased to find that, as requested, our beds were organised into a configuration that suited us.The courtyard offered various seating areas which was great for any time of the day and for all weathers - shelter, shade and sun! There were plenty of doors opening onto the courtyard which created a free-flowing space. The kitchen had everything we needed and more. While this is a spacious and reasonably well-equipped house, we found that even at half capacity (8 people rather than the 16 max) the space did not work for us. We had to move furniture around in the games room in order to be able to play card/board games, importing sufficient chairs from the dining room. Even then, the chairs were not particularly comfortable (one was broken). The upstairs lounge was not practical as it meant carrying drinks and snacks up a flight of stairs. Apart from an en-suite room downstairs, there is no downstairs cloakroom which resulted in occupiers of the other ground floor bedrooms having to go upstairs if they needed a bathroom during the night. One double bedroom is so small that apart from two bedside tables there is no storage or hanging space - there isn't even anywhere to put a suitcase! On arrival we were a little disappointed to find the floor and some of the surfaces in the games room were sticky and there were several wrappers and crumbs. We feel that we left it cleaner than it was when we arrived! Some bedrooms and bathrooms also looked as if they hadn't been cleaned particularly well. During our week at Smithfield House the weather was very warm and sticky and the only bed covering available in most bedrooms was a very thick duvet.Despite these drawbacks, we had a really enjoyable stay at Smithfield House and I can see how this property would work really well for many groups of people.
