Guests say

The Glebe is a charming cottage praised for its comfortable beds and welcoming touches like a basket and Christmas decorations. It's well-suited for large groups and families, with ample space and a garden that merges into the woods. While some guests found the kitchen well-equipped, others noted a lack of equipment for larger groups. The location offers tranquility with nearby woods, though the proximity to a main road was a concern for some. The housekeeper's preparation and responsiveness to issues were commended.

The property was generally found to be very clean, with a well-prepared welcome and good housekeeping noted. However, some guests mentioned issues with kitchen cleanliness and a malfunctioning dishwasher, slightly affecting the overall impression.

The location is appreciated for its proximity to woods and outdoor activities, making it ideal for nature lovers. However, the presence of a nearby main road with fast-moving traffic was a concern for some guests, impacting the tranquility.

Guests found the beds extremely comfortable and the living spaces ample for large groups. Some concerns were raised about the coldness of the house overnight and the limited hot water supply, but overall, the comfort level was high.

The facilities received mixed reviews. Some guests were satisfied with the kitchen equipment and the games provided, while others found the kitchen lacking for a large group and the games room in need of an update. Maintenance issues like a non-working cold tap and a problematic dishwasher were also reported.

The welcome basket and Christmas decorations were appreciated by guests, indicating thoughtfulness. However, as gifts are not guaranteed and there is insufficient information on consistent thoughtful gestures for all stays, a score cannot be accurately provided.

About this property

Enjoy a holiday in this stunning detached property, which nestles within 4-acre private woodland and boasts cosy fires, amazing wildlife and spacious rooms.. The Glebe is an 18th century, stone-built, detached property that has been an important part of the historical parish of Duthil, near to the village of Carrbridge. Not only was it an ecclesiastical building, but before it became part of the church, it was a girls’ school. It is a very attractive building that when first spotted from the road on your approach, you really hope it’s where you’re stopping. Situated only 2 miles from Carrbridge, and set just off a quiet road, The Glebe has a lovely position with a large enclosed garden and private pine forest with resident red squirrels, deer and an amazing array of birdlife throughout the year.

It truly is an excellent place to relax and spend your day in tranquillity. On entering the property from the driveway, where there’s space for up to 4 cars, the hallway leads off in multiple directions, but straight across is a spacious boot and coat room, ideal for after a long day exploring on foot. The dining area is a large double-aspect room with views out onto your own woodland. The large farmhouse-style kitchen is conveniently linked with an open doorway. Also on the ground floor there are 2 bedrooms and a separate toilet. The master bedroom is huge with an historic stone fireplace across an entire wall. The second bedroom is also a great size and has twin beds and an en-suite shower room.

Up to the first floor and you will find a large, impressive living room, again with a huge fireplace spread across an entire wall. This fabulous room is great for everyone to gather and enjoy spending time together. There are 3 further bedrooms, one a twin with large en-suite bathroom, double bedroom with en-suite bathroom (can also be accessed from hallway), and a comfortable single bedroom.

There is much to see and do in the surrounding area. Carrbridge, with the oldest stone bridge in the Highlands, has a pub, two excellent cafés, a restaurant and an ancient pine forest that hosts an adventure park and a series of walking trails, offering a good chance of spotting the elusive capercallie. Beyond Carrbridge, Aviemore offers the gateway to the ski slopes in the winter and is an all-year destination for adventure travel with mountain biking and watersports readily available. Boat of Garten with the Abernethy Forest, where Springwatch and Winterwatch have been known to film, and Loch Garten are a birdwatcher’s paradise, with a good chance to see Osprey in the summer. Grantown-on-Spey is also nearby and the gateway to some of the best whisky distilleries in the world.

Aviemore, Boat of Garten and Grantown-on-Spey are all linked by the River Spey, offering some of the best salmon and trout fishing in Europe. However, if you want to simply enjoy the river, the Speyside Way hiking trail is a good option linking the towns. If walking isn’t your thing, there is the Strathspey Steam Railway giving an alternative, more historical view. The Glebe has been lovingly restored and finished to ensure visitors have a memorable Scottish Highlands holiday. A week isn’t enough time to enjoy The Glebe and its surroundings. The welcome basket was unexpected as were the Christmas decorations, which was a nice start. The beds were comfortable and the log burner added to the seasonal vibe. However, it was kind of cancelled out by the lack of kitchen equipment and serving dishes, making Christmas dinner look awful. The equipment was more on a par with a student flat than a self catering cottage for 9 people. Only 2 black bin liners and 2 t towels provided. The frying pans were filthy and had no lids. The baking trays were heavily marked and looked bad. The dishwasher stopped working properly and many of the so called clean plates on the shelves had small bits of stuff stuck to them. The biggest most annoying thing was that the garden was not secure for my 2 dogs, the front wall was only 2 ft high in some places, ridiculous- having to constantly take them out on a lead in the garden was tedious. The rules for them inside the house were cruel, only allowing them in the boot room, hallway and dining room. The lounge with the fire was upstairs! The house downstairs got cold overnight. To exclude them like this was awful. I was sorely disappointed with the Glebe and the company for recommending saying it was suitable for dogs- it must take that off the description. The equipment needs updating in the kitchen- serving custard and the Christmas gravy from plastic jugs is not on. There’s also not enough seating in the lounge for the amount of people they had beds for- one 3 seater, 2 arm chairs, 1 small wing chair. Made the most of it because it was Christmas and family were coming from far and wide but it could have been magical and wasn’t. I am very annoyed.
