Capel Mawr is a stunning and spacious chapel conversion in Llanrug, North Wales, offering a unique and memorable stay. Guests consistently praise its impressive interior, characterful features, and excellent location for exploring Snowdonia and local amenities. The apartment is well-equipped and comfortable, with friendly and helpful hosts. While most reviews are highly positive, some mention minor issues such as the lack of a second bathroom, occasional maintenance concerns, and the absence of laundry facilities. Overall, Capel Mawr provides a remarkable and enjoyable holiday experience, with the positives far outweighing any negatives.
Most guests found the property spotlessly clean and well-presented, contributing to a pleasant stay. However, a small number of reviews noted issues such as sticky surfaces, unclean crockery, and a smelly dishwasher, which slightly lowered the score.
The location is highly praised for its proximity to Snowdonia, Caernarfon, and local amenities such as shops, a chippy, and a pub. Guests found it ideal for exploring North Wales and enjoying both mountain and seaside attractions.
Guests frequently mention the spaciousness, comfortable beds and sofas, and relaxing atmosphere. A few noted issues with mattress firmness and the need for an extra bathroom, but overall comfort levels are very high.
The apartment is well-equipped with kitchen essentials and luxurious features, but several guests noted the lack of a washing machine, a second bathroom, and occasional maintenance issues such as unclear oven markings and minor wear in some areas.
The owner is described as friendly, helpful, and responsive, with some guests mentioning a welcome gift of Prosecco. Please note that such gifts are not guaranteed. The host's local recommendations and flexibility with check-out times were also appreciated.
Capel Mawr is an impressive and stunning apartment forming part of a converted chapel in the centre of the village of Llanrug, which is situated in the foothills of the Snowdonia Mountain Range, only three miles from Llanberis. This stunning property is perfect if you’re looking for something a little bit different, somewhere to celebrate that special birthday or anniversary perhaps? Or just a great base to get together with friends and family to discover and experience the beautiful Snowdonia National Park, stunning mountains and scenery and the superb coastlines this area has to offer. This magnificent property has an elegant ground floor entrance with two large glazed double doors opening into the entrance vestibule which immediately gives you the feeling of space.
The two original staircases sweeping to the left and right, one of which leads up to the magnificent first floor apartment, and is just a taster of what’s to come! Upstairs the unique circular open plan living area is immense and naturally divided into three areas, a wonderful sitting area, kitchen area and a dining area on a mezzanine platform, this is a wonderful space for socialising. Capel Mawr has been lovingly restored by its current owner, and has been a true labour of love with so many original features and attributes skilfully restored with other parts of the chapel being adapted to form integral parts of the property.
You are immediately drawn to the beautiful ceiling painted in pastel shades to emphasise the ornate coved ceiling with central roses and cornices, all enhanced with spot lighting. The sitting area is so relaxing and comfortable, perfect for chilling out after a long day walking on the mountains. The dining area, on a raised exposed timber mezzanine provides the perfect place for a more formal dining experience and is dominated by a massive circular window, and to the left and right hand side of the dining area a small flight of stairs lead down to a lower, more discreet seating area providing a nice little hideaway for you to enjoy some quiet time to reflect.
The kitchen area is very much in keeping with the original building where further parts of the chapel have been utilised to create a bespoke kitchen. Everything you could possibly need is catered for and the large pitch pine island and breakfast bar with stools provides a less formal place to enjoy a leisurely breakfast or late supper over a bottle of wine and reminisce over the day’s adventures. Three spacious bedrooms, two double rooms and a twin room, plus the family bathroom all radiate off the living accommodation. Each bedroom is tastefully furnished and individually styled and all feature the original arched windows.
The main bedroom benefits from having a feature sink in a carved ornate surround and a double door leads through to a dressing room with full length wardrobes and a sofa bed, lending a little more flexibility to the sleeping arrangements and accommodation. The bathroom is beautifully appointed with a modern roll-top bath on clawed feet, perfect for a long relaxing soak after a long day out walking; nothing like it to ease away those aches, there is a separate shower cubicle and washbasin inset into the original chapel pulpit. Outside there is a crushed gravel area providing parking for 3 cars.
Just a short stroll from this apartment are two village pubs, both serve meals and there are walks in abundance. Llanberis is just three miles away and offers an array of shops, Electric Mountain which is well worth a visit, plus there are numerous watersports on the lake, as well as it being one of the main starting points for hiking up to the summit of Snowdon. Fancy something a little less strenuous then take the train instead, or jump on the narrow gauge steam railway that runs the length of Llyn Padarn and enjoy a five-mile return trip taking in some wonderful scenery on the way.
Slightly further afield, why not visit the town of Caernarfon with its historic and majestic castle and the Isle of Anglesey is just waiting to be discovered? Whatever you fancy doing there is something for everyone and Capel Mawr provides a wonderful base from which to explore from and is a very special place to spend some quality time with friends and family. This beautiful property will have you wanting to return time and time again.
Situated in the foothills of the Snowdonia Mountain Range, Llanrug is a small village with two pubs and a shop just three miles from the famous town of Llanberis. Huge amount of room and felt like you were in your own personal boutique hotel. Great kitchen with all facilities. Host Dez responded straightaway to any communication and was really helpful. Llanrug is an excellent location for walks in Snowdonia which is what we were there for - 15 minutes to Pen y Pass and 25 minutes to Ogwen, otherwise 10 minutes to the seaside in the other direction. Walking distance to a couple of shops, a chippy (great and very reasonably priced) and an award winning butcher

Located perfectly between Llanberis and Caernarfon, the top floor apartment is huge yet cosy. We were a family of 4 but the property easily sleeps 6 if needed. The property has so many interesting features from the original chapel, and there are plenty of places to sit and relax. Would definitely recommend for families or others seeking access to the mountains
