Nestled within hundreds of acres of open moorland is The Old Stables at Wakefield Green, a wonderful base for outdoor activity lovers to explore the beautiful countryside of Mid Wales or just to get away from it all and relax. The Old Stables is a two bedroom cottage converted from stables and a hay barn in 1997, adjoining the owners’ own farmhouse, all located on a 10 acre smallholding, and it is perfectly situated for outdoor pursuits, such as walking, golf, cycling, clay pigeon shooting, rally driving and horse riding or alternatively unwinding with that book you always wanted to read!
Perfect for a small family or a couple, you’ll never be far from delights in this area of Wales. Step inside to be greeted by the traditionally styled kitchen, holding a wide array of appliances to tend to your self-catering requirements including a washing machine, electric oven and hob and a large fridge/freezer, so you can enjoy all of your home comforts including your home-cooked treats. Following through from the kitchen you will find the living/dining area, making a great spot for formal dining experiences as well as unwinding in the evenings in front of the television with a bag of popcorn and a film for a relaxing night in.
When your evening draws to a close, retire to the first floor where you can find two bedrooms in the form of a double and a twin room, separated by a shared bathroom including a bath with electric shower over, offering bright and airy spaces perfect for four to snuggle up and catch up on your rest ahead of your next adventure-filled day. To the front of the property is a communal lawned area shared with the owner, making a lovely spot to appreciate your natural surroundings, or spend a minute within the private seating area to the rear of the property with a coffee in hand to energise you before your day of excitement, take in the moorland views and perhaps see a kite or buzzard flying high!
This part of Radnorshire moves at a gentle pace, making it perfect for both a relaxing break or a longer holiday. For those wanting to get out and about in the great outdoors, there are plenty of walking trails close by including the Offa’s Dyke Footpath, Glyndwr’s Way and the Kerry Ridgeway. Slightly further afield, why not explore the Elan Valley with its majestic Victorian Dams, which forms part of an international Dark Sky Park and was one of the original Dambuster test sites! Barnes Wallis used Nant-y-Gro to help create his bombs as the remoteness was an advantage for the top secret trials to be conducted without fear of being observed!
Wildlife lovers will find plenty on offer, including the Gilfach Nature Reserve and Gigrin Farm at Rhayader, where visitors can watch dozens of red kites flying down to be fed daily. Cyclists can ride the National Cycle Route 825 which is at the end of the driveway, or for a more adventurous experience, why not go riding at Underhill Riding Stables, rallying driving at Phil Price Rally School or clay pigeon shooting at Griffin-Lloyd Shooting Ground. For guests who want to dine out in the evenings, there are plenty of pubs and restaurants within easy driving distance. The local village pub, The Lion, is two miles away; in nearby Knighton there are several choices including The Horse & Jockey Inn and The Saffron Indian restaurant; The Stagg Inn at Titley was Herefordshire’s Dining Pub of the year in 2018, and the Victorian spa town of Llandrindod Wells has plenty of restaurants, including Fabians and Worth Your Salt.
