Holiday Cottages In Newport

Found on the south coast of Wales, the city of Newport offers plenty for holidaymakers to enjoy while on a cottage holiday here. However, its small size means that it is still easily walkable; perfect for exploring under your own steam.

If culture and history are what you're after, you can visit the city's imposing cathedral, or the museum and art gallery which has all manner of artefacts from this area's past. The covered market is also worth a visit, not only does it have a great selection of fresh produce, but it has been a staple of life here for over 150 years. Outside the city centre there is a rich choice for day trips; choose from the National Roman Legion Museum, the Newport Wetlands Reserve or even the spectacular Tredegar House.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Sam - Verified booking

This cottage is in two halves.

The newer extension is lovely, large living room, comfortable bedroom, functional shower room. BUT the rest of the cottage is substandard for the money we were charged. The dated kitchen has a dirty, broken sink, the cooker is missing hob dial markings, the window sill grouting is grubby and there is no washing machine. Despite the owner saying there is no space to install one, there are plenty of empty cupboards where one could go. We had to drive to Newport and pay £20 for a laundrette service wash, then go back to collect. In 15 years of booking holiday rental cottages, we have never had one without a washing machine. The rest of the cottage smelt so strongly of damp and mildew my daughter and I got sore throats from it. She had to sleep in the twin room, but none of us could have slept in the older double room. The mould smell was so strong. The older style living room was dimly lit, too dark to sit in at night, smelt of damp and had huge dirty cobwebs all over the place. The stone fireplace was covered in thick cobwebs and home to spiders. It just didn't feel comfortable to spend any time in the room, so we didn't. The main bathroom had a broken skirting board hanging off the wall behind the toilet and cobwebs behind it. There was presumably an oil fired boiler in the locked cupboard in the bathroom as the whole room stank of fuel or oil. I had hoped to have a relaxing bath on holiday, but honestly couldn't have spent more than a few minutes in the room. We kept this door shut too. So for nearly £2,000 my family spent the week in three rooms which I don't feel is good value. The location was lovely and we enjoyed the river bank setting. The facilities offered for outside were on par with what we paid for, but sadly the inside was a real let down and disappointment. The house just isn't clean enough in places and the evident damp problem could be a health hazard for someone with asthma.

Carnorfa is a lovely cottage ideally located near the centre of the village with quick access to shops and pubs.

It's bit like a Tardis, looks small from the outside but very roomy inside. Basement has a bathroom with full bath and a small living room with TV. The entrance floor has the well equipped kitchen with a washing machine and separate dryer and a dishwasher. A large cooker with all the pots and pans you may need and a coffee machine. Pleasantly surprised by the welcome back - butter, bread, milk, etc. The fresh bread was fantastic! The living room had two sofas and an arm chair and a gas fire. The TV was a smart TV. Upstairs was a bathroom with a nice tub and a separate shower and two bedrooms. The top floor had sky lights with views to the sea additional seating and another shower room and a very comfortable bed. All the showers were pressure showers apart from the one in the basement which was electric. The street is a little narrow but there is enough space to park your car but remember to place the bin in the space when you go anywhere. Near by there are a few pubs - we tried them all and all had something different. Don't forget to try the cellar bar! We were there in early April and not everything is open all week at that time so make the most of going out from Thursday to Sunday. Day trip to St David's is a must along with was walk along the coastal path there. Stunning scenery awaits you!. Allow about 2 hours for the walk which is mostly flat except towards the end. Overall, Carnorfa is an ideal place to stay at and the property is modern and well looked after and equipped with the everything that is of high quality. You get what you pay for!

Wow| What a Delightful Cottage We found Craigluscur so clean and bright, even on cloudy and windy days in February.

Everything was there that we needed including a lovely Welcome Pack left by the owner Maggie. We found the bed very very comfortable with lovely bed linen and we had the perfect nights sleep. Maggie was always available should there be any queries and responded very quickly either by text or in person. The location of Craigluscar was also perfect. Just off the main road, yet so close to all the shops, inns etc. In fact, The Castle Inn was less than a stones throw away whilst The Royal Oak just one minutes walk. The food and beer in The Castle was top quality and The Royal Oak served an excellent range of curry take-aways cooked in true Asian style. The Golden Lion was just a five minutes walk along the main road with excellent beer and served a superb Sunday lunch. The little cafes and wine bars were also very close and provided lovely coffee, cakes and lunches. The walks along the estuary were super with a myriad of different wading birds made for a very relaxing stroll. There was a good bus service to Cardigan and Fishguard and beyond with bus stops right outside The Castle Inn. Maggie is a font of knowledge about the area and told us about so many interesting places to visit it was impossible to visit everywhere in the week. We fell in love with Newport and Craigluscar and definitely plan to return. Thank you Maggie

Amazing cottage, in a fantastic location, the property is done up really well and is very comfortable.

It's a very short walk to a lovely beach. I'd definitely recommend it. The reason for 4 rather than 5 stars is the lack of 'extra touches' compared with other places (usually cheaper) that I've stayed in, e.g the welcome pack contained uht milk and long life bread, compared with places I've arrived to find platters of fresh fruits and fresh flowers etc, the essentials were provided, but but really enough to last the week (and there was only two of us+a baby) e.g tea, coffee, shower gel, shampoo which fortunately we'd brought our own. Lack of plug sockets by bedside tables was also a minor niggle. There was no option for high chair or travel cot which again meant we had to bring our own. Also as a note for others with young kids the rungs on the banisters our far enough apart a child could very easily fit though so we were needing to watch our daughter very carefully when upstairs (pretty sure it wouldn't pass modern building regulations). These negatives are all pretty minor and absolutely would not put me off staying again, just a note for the owner that a little extra can make a big difference! Jon, the house manager was great and when we said there were no bin bags he got them to us the same day.

House is phenomenal on first appearance and does have everything required in terms of facilities, it’s very picturesque and the garden is lovely and well maintained.

It could do with a few improvements, the important parts were clean but lots of cobwebs and mould in the older parts of the house which I am not sure you expect when paying nearly £2k for a week stay. Also some of the windows were difficult to open, remote control difficult to use and had clearly been chewed by a dog. One of the bi-folding doors has issues when closing also. Had to have a handy man out twice due to issues with the toilet that apparently had happened before (although this was rectified very quickly after speaking to Sykes so no complaints with that). We were travelling with a baby so a lack of high chair, travel cot and washing machine wasn’t ideal, albeit my fault for not checking before booking. Overall we had a pleasant stay and would go back. It’s an ideal location for exploring South Wales and had lots of things close by. The house itself just needs a few tweaks, although this may sound petty they were things that impacted on our stay and could be easily rectified.
