Large Cottages in Galway

Large houses to rent in Galway for your Irish adventure

Located on the western coast of Ireland, Galway is a harbour city at the spot where the River Corrib flows into the Atlantic Ocean. It's known as the festival capital of Ireland so there's always something exciting happening in the streets with a wide range of theatre and shows.

There's plenty to entertain everyone in this bustling destination, and our big cottages in Galway are the perfect choice for a break with friends and family, celebrating a special event, or simply creating unforgettable memories.

From gorgeous cottages in the countryside to sprawling castles in private estates, take a look at our range of group accommodation in Galway and start planning your Irish adventure.

Why choose Galway for your group trip?

Galway has a unique charm and a cheerful atmosphere that draws visitors in. There's a whole heap of amazing festivals and events throughout the year, as well as plenty of lively street music, medieval architecture, attractions and lots of traditional Irish pubs.

As well as being a popular seaside destination with long, golden sandy beaches, Galway is also a thriving cosmopolitan city centre. The cobbled streets, colourful buildings, bar culture and bohemian vibe make it a fun holiday spot for group trips.

Quay Street is the main strip of this small but buzzing city. There are Irish pubs, restaurants and cafes and pretty shops to browse in, and with such a fun vibe, you'll love wandering through the street and getting swept up in the atmosphere.

Located on The Docks, Galway's commercial harbour is the fascinating historical gem of the Spanish Arch. Erected in the 1500s, this archway is an extension of a Norman town wall from the 1200s, built as a defence strategy. The Docks make a lovely place to explore and take photos, with a landscape of colourful buildings and a pretty marina.

Galway has always been a cultural hub, and the city lives and breathes traditional Irish music. You'll find buskers on street corners and live music in pubs that'll have your feet tapping.

If you're a fan of fresh seafood then you'll be in fish heaven in Galway. The world-famous oysters are plucked from the clear, clean waters of the Atlantic and are sought by chefs around the world. There is even the Galway Oyster and Seafood Festival held in their honour every September.

Recently bestowed the honour of the European Capital of Culture 2020, there is always something exciting going on in Galway. From its much-celebrated Galway International Arts Festival, the famous Galway Races and the fun Macnas Halloween Parade, you'll find plenty to do to make special memories with your favourite people.

Outside of the city, you'll find the wild and sparsely populated Connemara region, which offers incredible scenery of mountains, valleys, lakes and hilly walks across the peaks of the Twelve Bens. Also on the doorstep are the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren and the Aran Islands, making Galway a great place for basing yourself to explore some of Ireland's most spectacular scenery.

What our customers say about their holidays

The town of Trabane was so quiet and peaceful and beautiful.

We loved seeing the cows, horses, donkeys, and cats. The cottage itself was well cleaned, the bed was comfortable, and there was a good supply of kitchen dishes, tools, and even a few spices. Note that the fridge is not hooked up to dispense its own water supply, but the tap water was delicious and safe to drink. There is not wifi per se, but there was a portable wifi device that our host's brother was sooooo helpful in helping us set up! The only issue we had was with mice/bugs. We saw a mouse, found some mouse droppings in a cabinet, and could hear them in the walls/ceilings. Our host's brother brought by a high-frequency device to help scare them away, but this only somewhat worked for us. There were also a lot of wood lice emerging from a couple cracks inside, and a giant house spider. I guess these are just things that come with staying near nature, unfortunately. But this issue aside, the place was otherwise perfect. The location is a bit over an hour from Galway City, so it is close enough to access the city and other areas if needed, but secluded and quiet enough to truly disconnect and relax. There is a fantastic walking trail down by the beach that goes around the island, and views of Cliffs of Moher in the distance on clear days. A small grocery/convenience store (Costcutter), a bar (Hooker Bar), and a food truck (The Dutch Van) were all about 10-15 minutes away. Other areas of interest nearby we visited: Diamond Head hike (1.5 hours drive) Doolin and Cliffs of Moher (2.5 hours).

    Lovely house with superb view.

Very clean and excellently equipped. Probably the best equipped house I've stayed in. Very close to local pubs, shop and ferry. Some nice walks from the house and the beaches are lovely - would be great for swimming in warmer weather. Overwhelmingly positive feelings about the house and very glad I booked it but there were a couple of negatives. The house does get cold when the weather is not so warm and doesn't seem to retain its heat too well even though the walls are very thick. The gas heating is good but could be expensive if left on for long periods (there are plenty of warnings about this in the information folder in the house). We turned off most of the radiators and heated only 3 rooms in the evening and on a couple of chilly mornings so we weren't shocked by the cost of gas and electricity at the end of the holiday. There was no information about where we could park though a word with the caretaker sorted this out - it would have been good to have this information before we got there or even in the information folder in the house. There was also no information about where the bins were situated so we just used the ones beside the adjacent houses. Fish and chips from the take away were a bit pricey considering the chips were from a packet and were not hand cut (a bit disappointing).

After months staying in numerous cottages, we found this one disappointing.

It’s in a great location, has loads of tv channels and is very spacious and modern in the kitchen and living areas but the bathrooms are very small and we didn’t feel the cottage had much personality or any welcoming feel. Outside, there’s no name to identify the property and the grounds are rough and full of weeds and litter. Inside, even though we arrived after the cleaners had been, the heating was off despite the recent sub zero temperatures and the place was stone cold. There was no welcome note or milk, no fuel for the wood burner or any information about the oil heating, waste disposal, any local maps, suggestions or visitors book. Even the wall switch for the cooker is unmarked. A lack of soft furnishings and décor means the cottage looks a little bare and is a little noisy. The bed was comfortable and the bedding and towels clean and of reasonable quality. Whilst the floors, furniture and bathrooms were clean, the oven trays were in such a state they needed to be lined with foil and all the cooking pans we used needed to be thoroughly cleaned first. It’s a functional, spacious cottage in a great location with fantastic views and I imagine it would be a much better stay in summer than winter but if we were in this area again, we’d be staying elsewhere.

We had a lovely stay at Sunset View - which was very aptly named - beautiful sunsets every evening from the large, well-kept garden.

Kathleen & Tom provided a much-appreciated Welcome Pack which included cereal, apple tart, bread, butter, etc. They were on hand if we needed anything and were very helpful & friendly. The cottage had everything we needed. It was clean, comfortable, well-kept and roomy. There was ample off-road parking. The area itself was very peaceful. It was a good location for a base and while we ventured out each day - to Galway City, Fr Ted's at Cloon, Maumturk Mts, Cong, Silverstrand (lovely beach), Roscommon ... Kathleen and Tom did tell us about the nearby 'hidden bridge trail' at Glinsk which was beautiful. Thankfully Kathleen provided the Eire Code for us prior to our visit, as the map on the website showed the cottage in the wrong place (we did mention this to Kathleen). The garden was great for my dog Ben to roam safely in. He was comfortable being there and even went uninvited into Tom & Kathleen's house to see them - they were very good about that! Sunset View was a lovely place to stay. Kathleen and Tom were very thoughtful & kind - such lovely people. Thank you. Linda, Carol, Anne & Ben the dog.

We had a wonderful week at Castle Demesne House.

We were greeted by our host nearby, she lead us to the property which gave us outstanding views as soon as we turned into the drive way. There is plenty of space to park (we tucked our car around the back of the property so it wasn't in our view - we wanted to make the most of every bit of that amazing all around view!!!). Our host gave us a very warm welcome and was able to offer advice on local attractions etc. We were able to relax into our holiday straight away and felt so lucky to be in such idyllic surroundings. We had everything we needed in the property and were very comfortable throughout. The driving from this property is easy and pleasurable to get to anywhere you want to visit in Connemara and the surrounding areas. Always a pleasure to return to the property at the end of the day and make use of the cushioned patio furniture with a glass of wine in hand and yet more chances to enjoy that view!
