Beach Cottages In Whitby

Come rain or shine cottages by the beach are a lovely place to go on holiday. Whitby, found on the Yorkshire coast, has a wide, sandy beach that provides the perfect location for a beach break. Whether you are looking for a couple's getaway or a family week away Whitby has a great selection of beach cottages for your stay.

Making the most of Whitby's beach

Although often associated with sunny, summer days, coastal cottages in Whitby can be enjoyed at any time of year. In the summer be sure to bring towels and the bucket and spade. Whitby's beach is sandy so be prepared to make a magnificent sand castle creation. On the west side the beach is larger and has some impressive offerings in the summer. Here you can hire deckchairs or a windbreak, there are also a kid's paddling pool and donkey rides on offer. With so much on offer Whitby is a great location for a self-catering beach holiday.

When the nights draw in, the beach at Whitby remains a lovely place to rent a cottage on the coast. Bracing winter walks are a great way to make the most of the beach in winter, especially when there is a cosy cottage to warm up in afterwards. Some beach cottages in Whitby are also pet friendly so you can bring you pet along to enjoy the seaside holiday fun. All of the beach at Whitby allows dogs in the winter and the east side allows them throughout the summer too.

Nearby you can visit Robin Hood's Bay, Runswick Bay, or Scarborough

    Large, comfortable and well equipped.

Fabulous views, lovely garden. The house is in a great position, easy walk to Robin Hood's Bay, excellent facilities in the village (pub, shop, bakery) and on a regular half hourly bus route between Whitby and Scarborough (as a party of 6 with only one car, the bus was really useful). Great walks straight out of the door. The old railway line or Cinder Path runs along the coastal route as well as the Cleveland way so lots of options for circular routes. The house had all that we needed - in the absence of detailed reviews on the Sykes House page I had scoured reviews on other companies and some had said the facilities were lacking, but they weren't at all. The utility room with its stable door had a good washing machine (that played a little tune when it finished), dishwasher and tumble drier, there was a washing line, pegs, ironing board and iron, two vacuum cleaners (one wasn't working but one of my sons fixed it and emptied it so now there are two). Lots of fridge and freezer space, cafetierres and teapots, lovely range cooker, big dining table for dining and games, good telly for watching Wimbledon on, cute summer house in the garden that was very popular with our party. We couldn't work out the recycling and I asked Sykes and they said only one bin, so were saving things and taking them with us looking for recycling centres. Towards the end of our week we found a note under a chopping board saying that the bin contents will all go to be sorted at a recycling centre so it's a shame we didn't see that sign earlier. If you are reading this you will know you can put everything in the bin with a clear conscience. The only thing missing was oven gloves (I have left the ones I brought at the cottage for the next people) and a door mat front and back would have been really useful as we had showery weather. Also maybe a shoe rack and a couple of extra coat hooks for a house that sleeps 10. There's a nice sage patch in the garden if you want herbs for your dinner - it's near the washing line.

This is an ideally situated property to access both Fylingthorpe and Robin Hoods Bay( about half a mile to the top of the hill via the road) Sheen Cottage is good on some aspects but lacking on others.

For a multigenerational family there is plenty of space, however it should be noted that all of the toilets and bathrooms are on the first floor. One of the bathrooms is modern and has a walk in shower and a bath, the other is dated and has a shower over the bath. There is a third separate toilet which is extremely old but functional. The bedrooms were big enough with storage aplenty, 4 of the 5 are on the back of the property so have great views. The kitchen is fairly big with a large range cooker and fridge. The sink unit and drainer could do with updating. There are just enough dishes and cutlery, more would be useful. The dishwasher is in the utility room across the hallway with the washer and tumble drier. The lounge and dining room are on the back overlooking the garden but only the dining room can accommodate the maximum number of guests. T.v and Wi-Fi were both ok. The towels and bed linen were good and we found the beds relatively comfortable. Parking was outside, we didn’t have any problem parking 3 cars on the roadside. On the down side, the property could do with a really good clean .Surfaces felt sticky , the windows were dirty and there were lots of dust webs. A feeling of neglect ie broken window panes, curtain rails that were so old they fell down when you tried to close the curtains. The wheelie bin is filthy and desperately needs a clean. The garden whilst picturesque had really long grass that we asked to be cut. The “wild”area at the bottom was not really child friendly as it was overgrown with weeds and you weren’t sure what lurked beneath(Dog poo?). The summerhouse was really grubby , a shame as it would have been lovely to sit in if there wasn’t so much dirt and dust there. We wouldn’t return to Sheen Cottage unless it was upgraded

Both myself and the dog thoroughly enjoyed this holiday.

The walk along the cinder path was longer than we thought and very muddy in places glad I took my walking boots. There is a shorter way into Whitby which the next door neighbours showed me on the last day. The cottage was lovely and clean and tidy also very warm. The electric went off for 6 hours on the Friday but that was due to Northern Power repairing a cable nearby. The walks around the river and Captain Cooks Haven were great for a last evening walk. The only things that could be better is that there were no bath mats and I hate getting out of a shower onto a tiled floor so I used the rubber mat for inside the bath. Also there was no draining rack for dishes (I know there is a dishwasher but being only myself I didn’t use it) I was bothered about the crockery sliding off the draining board into the floor. Only little things but would be nice to see these in place on a return visit. Would I go again yes definitely thinking about September. What doesn’t show on the picture is that you face the brick and wood shed which houses the bins so part of your view of the river/viaduct is obscured downstairs but great upstairs. Lovely open countryside views at the back and private decking area. No fenced in area but took the dog on the lead out to the grass at the back morning and evening for his toilet. Would recommend this property prefer being at the top than having to climb the steep hill everyday from the cottages at the bottom but they have a brilliant river view swings and roundabouts. Parking great no issues at all that’s a big plus for me

We have stayed here as a family treat for my elderly parents three times and have really enjoyed it.

The property is generally clean, well presented, well equipped, warm, comfortable, spacious and dog friendly with a small garden and a field nearby. The downstairs bedroom for older people or those who are less mobile is a huge plus as are the en-suite bathrooms. If you are fit and healthy, the walk into Whitby and back is not a problem. Alternatively, taxis cost around £6 one way this year. Areas for improvement in our opinion: Hand rail for steep tiled steps to downstairs bedroom (health and safety). Outdoor lighting required on pathway and steps from front door to car parking space (health and safety) Floor length curtains downstairs require laundering (cleanliness and hygiene) Late check in at 4pm and early checkout at 9am this year really affected our enjoyment of both the first and last day of our stay. Hopefully this will be changed once the additional time required for anti - covid cleaning relaxes (customer focus and enjoyment / value for money). None of the suggestions for improvement would prevent us from booking again, however they would enhance the quality of our stay.

Sheen cottage is a great property for a large party in a very convenient position for Robin Hood's Bay but out of the main village.

There is a pub, a village store and a childrens park within 5 minutes walk. Weve stayed here 3 times but I'm afraid this year there were some aspects that were not satisfactory. General cleanliness is an issue. The interiors of some of the kitchen units were dirty. Windows and window frames need a good clean. There was a curtain missing in the dining room. There is a general air of neglect about the property. The bathrooms need some storage units or shelves. There certainly isn't enough storage for 10 people in the bathrooms. Waste bins in all the rooms would be helpful. The one rubbish bin outside is not adequate for ten people considering all the recycling has to go in there as well. On a positive note the garden is very attractive and a good size for children to play in. I would say that that if you're looking for a property that's fully refurbished and immaculate this probably isn't for you. But if you want somewhere whpere a group of young children can play without fear of spoiling something, this is ideal. Our grandchildren love it here.
