Big Cottages & Group Accommodation in Berwick upon Tweed

The gorgeous town of Berwick-upon-Tweed straddles the border between England and Scotland. Located just two and a half miles from the current Scottish border, Berwick-upon-Tweed has changed its allegiance thirteen times over the centuries. Having been fiercely fought over due to its strategic importance, the town eventually fell to the English in 1482, when a great wall was built around the town to prevent the Scots from invading. Berwick-upon-Tweed is therefore a fantastic option for those looking to take in some UK history on their large cottage holiday.

Berwick's ties to Scotland remain close, and it has the dubious honour of being the only English town to have a team playing in the Scottish professional football leagues. Why not take in a match on your last minute cottage holiday? On May 1st of each year, a celebration of Berwick's unique town boundaries takes place with a cavalcade of horsemen and women riding through the town. Make sure not to miss it! Much of Berwick's attractions are based around its past, and there are many walks on offer which give an awesome sense of Berwick's place in the history between the two now united kingdoms. However, for how much longer? Big Cottages also recommend the numerous contemporary outdoor pursuits on offer in Berwick, as the town has a great selection of activities available such as horse-riding, sailing, shooting and cycling to keep you entertained on your group getaway.

What our customers say about their holidays

The Old Farmhouse was a brilliant place to stay.

It was much bigger than we had expected, beautifully presented and had everything you could want for an enjoyable stay. It is ideally situated to explore places like Holly Island and all the coast line down to Craster. We used it mainly as a base for some walking in the Cheviots. There are fantastic views over these from the 2 front bedrooms. The house is very well set up for families with both front and back gardens enclosed to stop little ones making the great escape. Cots and high chairs were available. There were only 4 of us so we rattled around in the space. 6 adults wouldn't feel squashed. The location is very quiet even though there is a road running in front of the house. This appears to have about 2 cars a day using it and although on a working farm you wouldn't know it. Lowick is just down the road and has a good locals pub as well as a decent Pub/Restaurant ( The Black Bull) Ford & Etal estate is close by and definitely worth a visit. There also some beautiful walks around the estate. One very, very small niggle was the ensuite was a tad cosy but it was perfectly usable. The owner, Mrs Reavely is delightful and only lives at the other end of the farm. She kindly left lots of fresh flowers, wine and a very large box of sweets! If you are thinking of visiting this part of the country I would highly recommend the Old Farmhouse as an ideal base

We booked Mill House but unfortunately storms meant we couldn’t stay there at the last minute.

However the owner was able to put us in another property Shepherd’s House which was incredible! We couldn’t speak highly enough of the owner for moving us when we thought we would be having a cancellation. The property was outstanding! Better than the photos even, and the photos are great! We had a welcome hamper of essentials on arrival, spotlessly clean, such a well looked after, spacious, modern property that suited our 2 young families plus grandparents! It was really really nice! The bedrooms were really big, fitting a family of four in one of them on one side of the house! The pool table was great for our older children! The kitchen lounge space was amazing, with lovely rural views, huge windows letting in natural light, a lovely space to cook, chat and sit together! The extras details were lovely (eg) christmas trees and lights! It was very rural but there was everything close by we wanted to see; Bamburgh, Holy Island plus plenty of places to eat locally too. We had an excellent time there and couldn’t speak highly enough of the owners and their communication, and the property itself! So although the review isn’t directly about Mill House both houses were owned by the same person so I’m sure the other property would have been of the same high standard. Thank you for a memorable stay! It really was a beautiful property!

This is the second time we have stopped at Mill House and were all excited about staying again.

We are a family of 9 including two chidren. The Barn is very spacious with a large kitchen and lounge with plenty of seating and a snooker table at the other end. A downstairs toilet is very useful. Upstairs the bedrooms are all of a good size two of them en-suite and a large family bathroom as well as a utility room with washer and dryer. The hot water was plentiful. The property was very clean/ A welcome pack was left for us. There was everything that you could need in the kitchen a varied supply of pots and pans. Lots of magazines books games. Information on anything you are interested in. The Barn is very well situated for a lot of places. We went on the train from Berwick on Tweed to Edinburgh for the day, Eyemouth, Kelso races and Bamburgh Castle, Grace Darling Museum and the Church we also did a round walk around Norham Castle, walking on the English side of the River Tweed. We ate at the Black Bull in Lowick on two nights and another night in Wooller at Milan an italian. Both were delicious. Everything about the property description is true. We did meet the owner who was very nice. There are sheep all around the property which my grand daughters loved.

Great house in a very quiet location.

Plenty of hot water and super king size beds, The latter is a real bonus as so many holiday properties have standard doubles and/or uncomfortable beds. Facilities within the house are generally excellent but I haven’t given full marks as there was a dripping tap in the kitchen and small leak from a heated towel rail in one bedroom. The owner said their plumber was away which is why they hadn’t been fixed so I assume these issues have now been sorted. Other two issues were a lack of medium and small cooking trays/oven dishes and the fact that the water was brown which we assumed was because it came from a well. The water was drinkable but we ended up buying filtered water for drinking (though did use house water in the kettle and for cooking). The owner did leave a couple of bottles of water as they realised some people may find the brown colour unpalatable. But none of the issues listed would put us off going again. It really is a great place to stay - and the location is handy for lots of local attractions. The village is excellent with two pubs and a brilliant village shop selling local produce. Would throughly recommend this house.

The Old Farmhouse is a very comfortable, well furnished spacious house in a beautiful setting with fantastic views of the Cheviots.

An unexpected welcome pack of two bottles of wine (enjoyed by the adults) and a lovely box of biscuits which were enjoyed by all the family was a lovely thought as were the fresh flowers. Mid week we even received some fresh home grown vegetables from the very friendly and helpful owner which were delicious. The enclosed garden was very much appreciated by our granddaughter and meant we could relax knowing she was safe playing. Garden furniture at the front and the rear of the property meant we could make the most of the sun early mornings and late into the evening and the sun room meant we could enjoy the sun even when there was a slight breeze, It is an excellent base for Northern Northumberland and the Borders, we had fantastic days out exploring with lots to do within 30/40 minutes of the property. We would definitely stay again and don't think anyone would be disappointed if they booked this property. Thank you from all of us.
