What our customers say about their holidays

  • Kevin - Verified booking

We have visited Netherraw for three years running however, sadly this will be the last time.

As a positive if you want isolation and great night skies and walks on your doorstep, Netherraw is perfect. There is hardly any noise, so you can hear the wildlife all around you. The upstairs bedrooms now have hangers for your clothes and ample drawer space. Sadly, the negatives we found were numerous. The shower basin easily flooded and water spilled over on to the floor. The only way to avoid this was to turn the shower on get wet, turn the shower off, lather up and then rinse off. Which isn't what you expect to do. This was raised last year when we came, but nothing has been done, in fact it is worse. The extractor fan isn't strong enough to cope with the steam in the shower room, so we had to leave the door open for it to escape. Not ideal but thankfully there was only the two of us. The toilet seat in the shower room, the laminate is cracked underneath and looks like it would soon start to peel off. The hot tube was part of the attraction of going to Netherraw, especially after long walks. On the second day we removed the hot tubs cover only to find that the headrests were damaged through wear and tear, their coverings were cracked and in some places none existent exposing the foam/cushioning underneath - so we decided not to use it. The overall feeling for us was that through usage the cottage just needs a bit of TLC.

We visited the property in August of last year and fell in love.

As soon as we got home we re-booked to come back in the February school holidays and already we are looking to go back in the six weeks holidays as even our 2 year old is upset to be home. The house is so comfortable and clean, it has everything you need for your stay, it feels like a home away from home. It's also full of wildlife around the property and so quiet for being near a main road. The "traffic" isn't a problem in the slightest you get the odd few cars during the day and hardly any at all on a night. At night if you get a clear sky, go and sit and look at the stars it's an unbelievable experience if you live in a city like ourselves. The owners are lovely, lovely people and will help you with anything they can. I love the tray the owner leaves on arrival for you, it feels so personalised to the family visiting somehow! the owner also popped round to tell us a few places we could visit nearby with our children! I must also mention the neighbors as they make their own honey and it's unbelievable and their dog Finn is the most gentle German Shepherd I've ever come across he deserves a mention in this review. We can't wait to return again as soon as we can.

The interior of the cottage is lovely.

Very clean, spacious and well equipped. Brenda gave me a very warm welcome on arrival. Unfortunately the garden and proximity to the A68 meant we cut our stay short. The small grass area with tables and chairs is separated by a hedge to the very busy road so sitting out wasn't really an option for us given traffic noise. In addition, as was noted in the property description before booking, we couldn't let our dog off lead in the garden which proved a bit of a hindrance. The garden really isn't appropriate for having a dog in my opinion as there is only a narrow stretch of grass and a lot of gravel which our dog wasn't keen on! I appreciate my comments on the external space and proximity to the busy road is a personal thing and others may not be concerned about traffic noise. It was a deal breaker for us and the lack of sleep due to traffic noise right through the night (had to have windows open as so hot) unfortunately hampered our stay.

I especially enjoyed going out on the rowing boat and fishing. I would definitely like to come to Roughley again. Zoe aged 9 wrote: My highlight of the Roughley was probably the frogs. I enjoyed picking them up… I liked exploring the field. The sheep are so cute to look at out the window. I have been coming here since I was a tiny baby. I love roughly cottage. PS Felting is fun making it out of sheep’s wool. Jem aged 14 wrote: I liked the two creeks here. I enjoyed canoeing… Their parents wrote: Lovely relaxing roughly! Our sixth visit in 11 years and this place has retained its charm. Long lie-ins, dog walks, including up to the stone circle, canoeing, fishing (several caught and released) games in the evening, reading, bliss… Thank you for preserving this little sanctuary. Thank you also to Pete and Liz for letting the kits feed the lambs – very special.

Back again (8th or 9th time) for some relaxation and family time.

Lovely to see nothing ever changes – just a tweak here and there. Jet our collie loves his walks and mastered getting in the canoes with the kids. Zoe wrote: Out of the great things you can do here I have decided to crochet trousers and shoes and a top for my best toy. I also went in the river at the bottom of the twinning field. It was very fun, and I loved it. We had a few wonderful sunny days after 1 week of being wild and crazy. It was so fun and the weather didn’t bother me because I like the cold. Her sister Charlotte wrote: The two weeks with my family and the amazing Roughley cottage have really made my summer holiday
