Château de la Source is a quintessential French château in Provence that lies near the foot of the iconic Mont Ventoux, set in a beautifully landscaped park with ancient oak trees, pines and the gentle sounds of birds or cicadas alongside a private swimming pool fed by a natural spring.
Inside, a blend of worldliness and heritage comes to life. Lovingly restored by owners with global roots, the interiors marry handpicked family antiques with vibrant French fabrics from Pierre Frey, Zoffany and Lelievre. Every corner tells a story. The Grand Salon invites lingering conversations whilst the garden gallery is anchored by a Schiedmayer baby grand piano. The kitchen, expertly equipped for preparing leisurely meals or for formal occasions, complements the potager, where herbs, vegetables and fresh eggs from the henhouse await each morning. Dine beneath centuries-old plane trees on the south terrace, paved in Provençal pink stone, or gather beside the vast fireplace in the intimate dining room, where you can feast together.
Up to 14 guests can stay in comfort, with all bedrooms air-conditioned and most offering marble-clad en-suites featuring sleek Grohe fittings. Each room is a haven in itself, furnished with ‘And So To Bed’ beds, divan mattresses and thoughtful touches such as crisp white linen and high-thread Egyptian cotton towels.
Just over 1km away, the charming medieval village of Mazan offers morning trips for croissants, afternoon café stops and restaurants. Here, you are immersed in real Provence, yet never far from the rest of the world with pretty Vaucluse villages and towns within easy reach such as Venasque, Bédoin and L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue.
Back at the château, take a stroll through the walled garden and forest, cool off in the swimming pool sourced from a natural spring, play a game of boules on the pétanque court and look out for crayfish and hungry nutrias by the ponds.
As dusk falls, the owl calls across the grounds and the stars seem impossibly close. The world outside recedes. Château de la Source is more than a place to stay - it is a return to something rare, rooted and quietly extraordinary.
Near the foot of the iconic Mont Ventoux, Château de la Source enjoys a spectacular setting within 5-hectares of historic parkland in a region of lavender, vineyards and orchards. This location in Provence perfectly balances both natural beauty and convenience, close to the historic heart of Mazan and only 40km from Avignon.
Just over 1km from the château lies the historic village of Mazan, where narrow lanes, pretty houses and a small handful of restaurants offer an authentic taste of Provençal life. It’s wonderful to be able to stroll to the village for morning croissants – do note that the first 200m along the main road does not have a pavement.
Surrounding Vaucluse villages such as Venasque (10km), Bédoin (11km) and Pernes-les-Fontaines (11km) are brimming with old-world charm, medieval architecture and local artistry – Venasque is classified as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. Nearby Carpentras (8km) offers a livelier atmosphere with an impressive cathedral. Don’t miss the region’s celebrated farmer’s markets where you can pick up seasonal produce, regional cheeses and fragrant truffles. In the summer months, the market in Velleron (16km) takes place six evenings a week.
Wine lovers will relish their position in the heart of the Ventoux appellation, with vineyards stretching in every direction and cellar doors inviting tastings of robust reds and delicate rosés (wine-tasting can also be arranged at the château itself). The fertile landscape also produces cherries, olives and the coveted black truffle, while surrounding orchards and forests provide the perfect backdrop for scenic walks and countryside rambles. Hikers will find a multitude of rural footpaths winding through fields and woodland, with more adventurous trails (and challenging cycling routes) climbing the slopes of Mont Ventoux itself.
The château is ideally placed for day trips to some of Provence’s most iconic destinations. Explore the papal city of Avignon (40km) with its historic bridge and grand Palais des Papes, or stroll along the canals and antique shops of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (24km). The stunning hilltop village of Gordes (24km), another official “Plus Beaux Villages de France,” is just a short drive away, offering breath-taking views and timeless beauty.
With its privileged location and picture-perfect surroundings, Château de la Source is a sublime gateway to the very best of Provence.
