Alton Hall was even better than we had hoped. There was a generous welcome tray of goodies and a bit of every thing we needed in the kitchen, with plenty of crockery, plastic ware and cutlery, washing up liquid and cloths etc.We loved the large dining table and we were able to set up a jigsaw at one end and still have plenty of room for at least 6 to sit and eat. The weather wasn't behaving very well so we didn't make use of the hot tub. However the entrance hall came into its own as there was plenty of space for our wet coats etc. Umbrellas are one of the many thoughtful touches, though we didn't use them as it was a bit breezy and hood were the best option. The throws were useful, inside and out. We had done research before we stayed but the local information in the file and leaflets led us to the lovely Farm shop and a great value lunch there and I bought the decaf Ceylon tea, that I had with my meal, from the farm shop. A Sunday Carvery at "The Old Poets Corner" in Ashover was another great value meal and the home baked rhubarb and apple crumble was delicious, There is also the delightful cafe, Stamp, in Ashover, with the Post Office still operating there in the mornings.. We also enjoyed visits to St Mary's and All Saints, the Church with the Crooked Spire, in Chesterfield. Full of history and varied side chapels, unusual in a parish church. I was given a warm welcome when I attended a Sunday service there. Another good place for a lunch is Thornbridge Estate. It is a great enterprise to support 1890's house and garden. There is an activity area for children, kitchen, formal and woodland gardens and the house, which can only be seen if you book a guided tour. We made us of our National Trust cards at Hardwick House and found links between families there and at Haddon Hall. This is still owned by the family and the guides are very knowledgeable. Highlights were the Tudor kitchens and old graffiti. When the weather was wet we still drove around the area or snuggled up reading or enjoying our jigsaws and games, but we could have enjoyed those which Jayne and David had thoughtfully provided. There isn't a shop in Alton but a variety of farm shops are close by and Claycross has a Tesco's extra and an Aldi, not far to go. With many small towns with a variety of chain and independent stores and garden centres, you can find all you need with a 30 min drive and enjoy the wonderful scenery on the way.If you have children Jayne and David have taken this very seriously, keeping matches for the log burner in a high kitchen cupboard and gate fixtures on the doors upstairs and a step stool in the ensuite. I took this down to the kitchen so I could access the top cupboards. Jayne and David were responsive and helpful before the visit , when I had a query. Alton Hall Cottage shows the same care and attention from the layout to all the little details , like different sitting areas outside, that all added to make our time away very special. Thank you Jayne and David and best wishes for the future.

A beautiful property in a lovely location. Excellent facilities and spotlessly clean. We loved board games around the kitchen table, walks from the doorstep and sitting all together in that wonderful space. Highly recommend for four couples as they are all en suites.
