Our stay at Keswick Reach Lodge Retreat (6–10 July) was extremely disappointing and nowhere near the standard we expected. The problems started as soon as we arrived. There were puddles of water on the kitchen floor, which we had to clean up ourselves before we could even unpack. To make matters worse, the entire lodge, including the bedding, smelled strongly of dog. The odour was so bad that we had to leave the site to buy Febreze just to make the lodge bearable.Things only got worse that evening when we lost all electrical power at around 10:30 pm. The emergency engineer's phone went straight to voicemail, so we had to walk to reception to find someone ourselves. The engineer who attended couldn't fix the issue and simply left the electrical breaker unlocked, telling us to keep resetting it ourselves throughout the night whenever the power tripped. The following morning, we reported the fault as instructed, but another engineer was also unable to repair it. This left us without hot water and unable to shower. Despite being told maintenance would attend promptly, nobody arrived when promised. We ended up boiling pans of water just to wash before leaving for the day. When we returned that afternoon, the problem still hadn't been resolved. Even worse, we discovered our lodge had been left unlocked while maintenance had been inside, with tools scattered across the kitchen worktops and all of our personal belongings left unsecured. We were eventually told the fault was caused by the oven.Unfortunately, almost all the food we had bought for the week relied on using the oven or a frying pan, yet there wasn't even a frying pan provided in the lodge. Although the park offered us a complimentary meal that evening, it did nothing to compensate for the food we were forced to throw away because we couldn't cook it or transport it elsewhere. It wasn't until the third day of our holiday that a qualified electrician finally fixed the electrical fault. By then, nearly half of our break had been spent dealing with problems instead of enjoying our holiday. The compensation offered—a complimentary meal, cocktails, and access to the spa—missed the point entirely. We booked Keswick Reach Lodge Retreat to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and explore the local area, not to spend time in the spa. These gestures did little to make up for the disruption we experienced.Overall, our holiday was dominated by issues that should never occur at a premium lodge retreat: a dirty lodge with a strong dog smell, electrical failures, no hot water, concerns about the security of our belongings, inadequate kitchen equipment, and the unnecessary loss of food we had purchased for the week. While the staff we dealt with were polite and tried to help where they could, the accommodation itself and the way such a serious issue was handled fell far below expectations. This was far from the relaxing holiday we had paid for, and unfortunately we would not recommend Keswick Reach Lodge Retreat based on our experience.
