About this property

Cosy comfort for six in the beating heart of Lakeland!

This is an elegant and original slate-built farmhouse property that will appeal to everyone's internal lakelover. The owners have sympathetically upgraded the property to the highest modern standards, while retaining the charmingly old-world character of Stone Arthur Cottage, and there is everything you could ask for here to provide the perfect Lakeland getaway!

As soon you walk up to the gothic cathedral-style doors, you can tell this is a special and thoroughly authentic property. From the archaic lintel above the wood-burner and the wonderful thick beams that line the ceiling in the living-room, to the beautiful floors and furniture echoed throughout this excellent property, antique wooden grandeur is everywhere!

High quality, high comfort real leather sofas let you recline in luxuriant bliss near the blazing wood-burner, and the wonderfully spacious yet homely country kitchen is open to the living-room, and makes a great spot in which to enjoy those all important walkers' breakfasts before you hit the hills. The bedrooms are generous and refined rooms, with the most wonderfully ornate and lavish antique wooden bedsteads, and ensure you wake well refreshed each morning to tackle the days activities, and the superb modern bathroom facilities will also help energise you into top form.

Views to Grasmere lake itself and the fells all around make your cottage a real delight to stay in, and the location could hardly be better, perfectly central in the Lakes and offering a winning combination of adventure in all directions and blissful tranquility. The most glorious scenery anywhere in England is all about you, and it goes without saying that the walking is second to none. Smaller fells like Loughrigg and Helm Crag make for outstandingly beautiful rambles, and there are plenty of larger mountains to conquer as well as a multitude of leveller walks by the lake shores.

This is Wordsworth country too, of course, so the cultural heritage is truly fascinating, and you can even walk up Greenhead Ghyll from Stone Arthur Cottage, and see the very sheepfold that inspired the poem 'Michael'. And we fully recommend a visit to at least one of the homes of the famed poet; Rydal Mount, Allen Bank and Dove Cottage are all open for your enjoyment.

Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family have been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century and Grasmere Lake, plus Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland Wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance. Grasmere is a wonderful base for your Lake District retreat.

We did lots of great walks with out needing to drive and there are nice pubs for food close by. The WiFi does not work at all. We did have mobile data but it dropped out from time to time. The list of what is at the property is not so helpful and when I phoned the agent they said if it is not listed it won’t be there. Worth knowing there is a dvd player and hairdryer (although not listed). What we did wish we had was a washing up bowl. Overall we had a lovely time and would recommend the cottage. Also recommend walking to Alcock tarn, which is stunning.

This is the second time we've stayed (last 2015). The last couple of years we have stayed in the Western Lakes but, glad we had a change this year. Stone Arthur was a fab location for Grasmere and ticked off a lot of walks that we wanted to do, Grasmere Lake and coffin route, Rydal Water amongst others. We would love to come back in the future. Cooking with the Aga was fine just took a little longer

As others have pointed out the wi-fi doesn’t really work but the phone signal was fine so we could use a hotspot for essentials. The Aga was great and the sofa and TV in the kitchen made it feel really cosy, even though it was very spacious.
