Guests say

Abbots Reading Mews 1 is a well-received cottage in Cumbria, praised for its cleanliness, dog-friendly features, and beautiful location. Guests appreciate the peaceful surroundings, proximity to local attractions, and the helpfulness of the host. While some minor issues with facilities and comfort are noted, the overall sentiment is positive, with many guests expressing a desire to return.

The cottage consistently receives high marks for cleanliness, with multiple reviews mentioning it being 'sparklingly clean' and 'spotless'. This indicates a well-maintained property that guests find comfortable and hygienic.

The location is frequently described as beautiful and peaceful, with easy access to local attractions and walks. The presence of a good local pub and the proximity to the Lake District enhance its appeal, although some guests desired more basic amenities nearby.

Comfort is generally rated highly, with the property described as cosy and homely. However, some guests mentioned issues with bed comfort and the desire for king-size beds, which slightly lowers the score.

Facilities are well-regarded, especially for dog owners, but some guests noted the lack of a washing machine, dishwasher, and some kitchen equipment. Maintenance issues like a non-working microwave and cracked serving dishes were also mentioned.

While guests have mentioned the provision of items and a welcome gift from the host, there is not enough consistent information about thoughtfulness in terms of gifts to accurately score this category. It should be noted that any gifts provided are at the discretion of the host and not guaranteed.

About this property

Escape the rat race in this beautifully converted Lakeland barn. The Abbots Reading cottages are surrounded by lovely natural woodlands, and you are perfectly situated to explore the South Lakes. Full of rustic features, yet fully modernised, your barn will become your home while you stay with us here.

Deep in the Lake District countryside at the southern end of Lake Windermere, the rolling hills and valleys round about are ripe for exploration, and you will always have plenty to see and do before returning to the welcoming comfort of your barn.

Lakeside nearby has a steamer pier, allowing you to cruise England's longest lake and visit the bustling centres of Bowness and Ambleside to the north. There is a platform here, too, for the wonderful Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, which will draw you by vintage engines into the lush Levens Valley. Enticing Eateries and country inns are dotted about the green countryside.

Inside your cottage, oak beams suspended in a vaulted ceiling set the scene for country living, and the tasteful modernity of this barn conversion will assure you of a supremely restful break. The excellently arranged wooden kitchen is the perfect place to prepare meals with your party, and if you choose not to sit at the adjacent dining table you can take your foot outside onto the patio.

Set on the southern shores of Lake Windermere, the small, sleepy hamlet of Lakeside offers a peaceful getaway location, hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the Lake District’s popular attractions, but still within easy reach of them. Whether you decide to discover the area in the car, by foot, bike, boat or steam, there’s plenty to see nearby to keep the whole family content. The ferry dock offers the chance to travel by boat to Waterhead or Bowness, or take a shorter trip to the National Trust’s Fell Foot Park, across the water, which offers pretty grounds set alongside the very tip of the lake, providing plenty of places for picnics, paddling, games and gentle strolls on sunny afternoons. Situated alongside the Lakeside Station is the long-standing Lakeside and Haverwaithe Railway, home to Britain’s oldest standard gauge steam engine, on which you can travel back in time along this well-loved Heritage line, and where little ones will delight in meeting Thomas and his friends. Visit the Lakes Aquarium to uncover the often-secretive world of life below water, where you’ll chance upon hundreds of captivating creatures that feature in the surrounding rivers, lakes and sea. There are wonderful, well-signed walks to be enjoyed in the immediate area, including the 5-mile route to Finsthwaite’s High Dam, which trails from Lakeside through pleasant woodlands and meadows. Lakeside offers an exclusive holiday location with all of the Lake District’s delights at your fingertips.

Well equipped, cosy in lovely grounds great for dogs. Very handy for local walks and easy close access to nice places throughout the Furness Peninsula and the south Lakes. Very peaceful. Good dog friendly pub nearby which was open all day when we visited.

If your looking for quite then this is your place, love the quirky up side down layout as it’s an old mews. This is our second time staying here my wife and I with our cocker spaniel, last time in Mews 2 just after covid lock down. The owners can’t do enough for you should you need them and they left us a lovely gift for being repeat visitor’s. We will definitely be back again in the future.
