Glen Cottage has been recently refurbished to a high standard and is situated in the picturesque village of Mickleton in Upper Teesdale in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Global Geopark, just off the Pennine Way Walk and close to the impressive High Force – England’s biggest Waterfall. Glen Cottage is the end stone cottage of a terrace and can accommodate up to three couples, or a family in a two bed cottage with linked twin bed barn with stunning views from the bedroom. Comprising dual aspect living/dining room, modern well equipped kitchen. Spacious en-suite master bedroom, second queen-sized bedroom (also ideal for children with option for Winnie the Pooh duvet and pictures).
The linked Barn with exposed roof beams comprises a family bathroom with twin bedroom with superb views over the Tees valley and garden paddock. Whilst connected to the Cottage via the link porch it is some distance from the main cottage bedrooms for audible supervision so we would not recommend children younger than say eight stay there independently.
Mickleton village boasts one acclaimed restaurant and a separate pub which does fabulous bar meals. Other excellent local eateries are located within 2-4 miles of the cottage. A well stocked supermarket is found in Middleton-in-Teesdale just 2 miles away.
The cottage resides within a beautiful rural farming community. Barnard Castle on the river Tees is a 15 minute drive to visit the famous Bowes Museum, its castle ruins and the weekly markets and is home to many lovely restaurants, pubs, and individual shops. Further up Teesdale are scenic walks along the river passing over the Wynch bridge via the beautiful low force waterfall cascades before rising to the majestic High Force Waterfall, 72 feet tall , a walk not to be missed. 2 miles up the valley side is the scenic Grassholm reservoir and sailing club. Many other beautiful walks and cycle rides abound over the fells in all directions. The Yorkshire Dales National Park is within a 40 minute drive or the beautiful cathedral city of Durham in a similar time. Even the Yorkshire Moors National park or the Lake District National Park can both be visited for a day trip so handy is its central location on the Pennines. Raby Castle and Deer Park is a 20 minute drive and should not be missed.
Full information is supplied at the cottage to help you get the best from your visit and the locals are usually ever helpful in sharing their beautiful world with visitors. Mickleton is about a 20 mins drive from the A66 trans Pennine route and a local bus stop 100 yards from the cottage links the village with Middleton-in-Teesdale and Barnard Castle on a circular route and stops every hour in both directions. Many scenic drives complement all the cycle and walking routes in this picturesque but sometimes challenging landscape of Hannah Hauxwell fame.

There is a step to the rear side entrance and there are steeper than usual stairs to the first floor in the Barn twin bedroom only.
Please note stairgates are not provided - Please bring your own for protection should it be necessary and we believe only older children should be sleeping in the more remote twin bedroom due to its distance from the main bedroom.

The cottage was clean and comfortable with everything we needed for a week in area of Barnard Castle. TV was fine, but we do not have Free satellite so took a bit of fiddling with to get it working after there must have been a power outage one night. Be aware that the stairs are a bit non-standard as they are the original old stairs. Daughter thought place was great as she was in offshoot extension which was originally a separate cottage. Her only issue was the Wi-Fi, and internet was not as good as at home. Bathrooms were fine just a little used, we used en-suite bathroom shower, and they used the shower over the bath in the offshoot extension to wash their hair, as they do at home, so everything worked fine.The road outside was a bit busy! When we were there as it was harvesting time and farmers were working through the night due to heat wave apparently (Aug 2026). It seemed to be a main road running through village, so traffic was busier than I expected. Access gate is a bit small to get into with a car and so we held up traffic a couple of times when trying to reverse in. Locals seemed to all accept these interruptions. I had to drive in couple of times when road was busy, as there was tractor's with huge hay loads racing by, and then turn around on an old concrete base just past the cottage (behind the car in the website photo), would not really recommend as I ran over an old tree stump as I reversed off the base once, luckily, I've an old SUV so no damage done. We do not cook much when on holiday as we are out all day and used the place as a base to sleep in. Seemed like everything needed was in the kitchen and it was all clean and usable, did use the dish washer and washing machine and the airer. Outdoor washing line is the wrong type as it is a twisted nylon type and green / black mildew could not be washed out; needs to be a simple plastic-coated type you can wipe clean, so if you have walking stuff that needs washing take a simple nylon coated line! We had a pizza and a drink for tea at Blacksmith arms on numerous occasions, about 8 mins walk from cottage. Friendly with holiday visitors till 7pm, then locals from 8pm. Also walked the old railway route, just up the hill from cottage. This runs for miles past the cottage and which we explored on a couple of evenings. Went to Barnard Castle town, Raby Castle, Rokeby House, railway museum at Shildon, Kiplin Hall, High Force waterfall and Ushaw House. All within easy reach of the cottage. Really enjoyed the week and the cottage was just about idea for us. We would go back there if we had not visited everything we wanted to see as it was a nice cottage in a great location with a friendly pub a few minutes' walk away that served a limited range, of rather nice freshly cooked pizzas till 8pm.

Perfect location. Walks from the door and many more places to visit in a short drive. Nice cottage with everything you need. Would love to return as we all had a fantastic holiday.
